"description": "Daily Maverick is an independent online news publication and weekly print newspaper in South Africa.\r\n\r\nIt is known for breaking some of the defining stories of South Africa in the past decade, including the Marikana Massacre, in which the South African Police Service killed 34 miners in August 2012.\r\n\r\nIt also investigated the Gupta Leaks, which won the 2019 Global Shining Light Award.\r\n\r\nThat investigation was credited with exposing the Indian-born Gupta family and former President Jacob Zuma for their role in the systemic political corruption referred to as state capture.\r\n\r\nIn 2018, co-founder and editor-in-chief Branislav ‘Branko’ Brkic was awarded the country’s prestigious Nat Nakasa Award, recognised for initiating the investigative collaboration after receiving the hard drive that included the email tranche.\r\n\r\nIn 2021, co-founder and CEO Styli Charalambous also received the award.\r\n\r\nDaily Maverick covers the latest political and news developments in South Africa with breaking news updates, analysis, opinions and more.",

It is a time to sort out your approach to life and other people and find your own place in the world; a time to determine your values – the things that will form the bedrock of who you are. But too often young people fall back on imperfect role models found in their communities and in celebrity circles, where violence and selfish interests are elevated.</span></span></span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">How can we break this cycle of bad influences resulting in violence and abuse? Because they truly care about one another. It is about reaching out and arming one another – not only with information and encouragement, but also with physical support.</span></span></span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>The power of caring communities</b></span></span></span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">In the words of American author and organisational behaviour expert Margaret J Wheatley: “There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it </span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>cares</i></span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> about.”</span></span></span></p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">I believe our response to the violence and indifference that threatens to engulf our higher-education campuses should be to fight it with a renewed sense of </span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>ubuntu</i></span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> – translating into real, deliberate acts of caring and kindness. </span></span></span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><u><b>DM</b></u></span></span></span></p>",
