"description": "Daily Maverick is an independent online news publication and weekly print newspaper in South Africa.\r\n\r\nIt is known for breaking some of the defining stories of South Africa in the past decade, including the Marikana Massacre, in which the South African Police Service killed 34 miners in August 2012.\r\n\r\nIt also investigated the Gupta Leaks, which won the 2019 Global Shining Light Award.\r\n\r\nThat investigation was credited with exposing the Indian-born Gupta family and former President Jacob Zuma for their role in the systemic political corruption referred to as state capture.\r\n\r\nIn 2018, co-founder and editor-in-chief Branislav ‘Branko’ Brkic was awarded the country’s prestigious Nat Nakasa Award, recognised for initiating the investigative collaboration after receiving the hard drive that included the email tranche.\r\n\r\nIn 2021, co-founder and CEO Styli Charalambous also received the award.\r\n\r\nDaily Maverick covers the latest political and news developments in South Africa with breaking news updates, analysis, opinions and more.",

Here are my five favourite stories in this week’s edition, which I suggest you page through, pause and revisit, with your feet up and your beverage of choice in hand.\r\n
1. Cyril shines at BRICS
\r\nEvery South African news site has reported on the daily drama of the much-awaited BRICS Summit in Sandton. President Ramaphosa made a positive mark on the global stage this week, and there were many behind-the-scenes negotiations and outcomes that have a bearing on South Africa’s place in the world of trade and geopolitics. Our journalists on the scene - Queenin Masuabi, Peter Fabricius and Ferial Haffajee - report on the debates, discussions and decisions, and answer the “so what” question about what really took place in Sandton and how that might affect us as South Africans.\r\n
2. Prof Thuli Madonsela’s long walk to free students from debt
\r\nThose of you who are avid readers of DM168 will know that even when it seems like the apocalypse is on my doorstep, I will always try to find a story to uplift your spirit and remind you that every second of life is sacred. Our two young writers Kristin Engel and Tamsin Metelerkamp have written about an amazing initiative by former public protector Thuli Madonsela. She has embarked on a 300km walk from Stellenbosch to Cape Agulhas to raise funds to pay students’ historic debt so that they can pursue their qualifications and improve their lives.\r\n
3. Satirically speaking
\r\nOur soothsayer and satirist, Malibongwe Tyilo, is back to tickle your funny bone with his hilarious take on the politicians who give us a pain in the neck. I’m not going to give away the secret of his magical salts. Suffice to say, Mali made my day.\r\n
4. Southern African escape
\r\nBridget Hilton-Barber has been regaling us with her weekly descriptions of an epic 40-day, 10,000km road trip from her home in Limpopo all the way to Rwanda and back again. She and her friend Hugh Fraser drove via Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania, Burundi, Malawi and Mozambique to connect with people, places and possibilities. This week, she writes about Day 16, when they made it to magical Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania – but only after much jaw-grinding and teeth-gnashing. \r\n
5. Good news for salary earners
\r\nOur inimitable personal finance editor, Neesa Moodley, has good news on getting a bit more bang for your buck. She explains how our nominal take-home pay has increased for the second consecutive month owing to inflation falling faster than expected to a two-year low of 4.7% in July, from 5.4% in June. Now that’s a bit of much-needed cheer for those of us fortunate enough to be employed. \r\n\r\nOn a side note, thanks to all of our readers who filled in last week’s survey — you have given us many suggestions that we are sifting through to improve our offering to you. If you buy the newspaper this weekend and fill in the survey by Monday morning at 9am, you will still be in line to win.\r\n\r\nPlease write to me at [email protected] with your comments, views, thoughts and reflections, which I will publish on our Letters page.\r\n\r\nUntil next week, yours in defence of truth,\r\n\r\nHeather\r\n\r\nThis story first appeared in our weekly Daily Maverick 168 newspaper, which is available countrywide for R29. He is also referred to by his initials JZ and clan name Msholozi.
\r\n
Zuma was born in Nkandla, South Africa, in 1942. He joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1959 and became an anti-apartheid activist. He was imprisoned for 10 years for his political activities.
\r\n
After his release from prison, Zuma served in various government positions, including as deputy president of South Africa from 1999 to 2005. In 2007, he was elected president of the ANC.
\r\n
Zuma was elected president of South Africa in 2009. His presidency was marked by controversy, including allegations of corruption and mismanagement. He was also criticized for his close ties to the Gupta family, a wealthy Indian business family accused of using their influence to enrich themselves at the expense of the South African government.
\r\n
In 2018, Zuma resigned as president after facing mounting pressure from the ANC and the public. He was subsequently convicted of corruption and sentenced to 15 months in prison.
\r\n
Jacob Zuma is a controversial figure, but he is also a significant figure in South African history. He was the first president of South Africa to be born after apartheid, and he played a key role in the transition to democracy. However, his presidency was also marred by scandal and corruption, and he is ultimately remembered as a flawed leader.
\r\n
The African National Congress (ANC) is the oldest political party in South Africa and has been the ruling party since the first democratic elections in 1994.
",

They are also major producers of commodities, such as oil, gas, and minerals. This makes them important players in the global economy.
\r\n
The BRICS countries have been working together to promote their mutual interests on the global stage. They have held annual summits since 2009, and they have established a number of joint initiatives, such as the BRICS Development Bank and the BRICS New Development Bank.
\r\n
The BRICS countries are often seen as a challenge to the traditional Western powers, such as the United States and the European Union. They are also seen as a potential force for stability in the global economy.
\r\n
South Africa is the only BRICS country that is located in Africa. This gives it a unique perspective on the challenges facing the continent, and it allows South Africa to play a leading role in promoting African development.
\r\n
South Africa's membership in BRICS has been beneficial to the country in a number of ways. It has helped to boost South Africa's trade and investment ties with the other countries, and it has also helped to raise South Africa's profile on the global stage. Additionally, the membership has provided South Africa with a platform to advocate for the interests of Africa and the developing world.
\r\n
There are some challenges that South Africa faces in its role in the grouping. One challenge is that South Africa is the smallest and least developed country of the five members. This can make it difficult for South Africa to influence the decisions of the other countries.
",

They have also argued for greater cooperation among developing countries.
\r\n
The summit is a relatively new forum, but it has already become an important event on the global calendar.
