"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The assassination of Krasimir Kamenov, wanted for crimes including murder in Bulgaria, and three others in Cape Town last month, has taken on a political hue.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is because of comments about Kamenov made by former Bulgarian official Ivan Geshev and what has happened to Geshev’s place in government. About two weeks ago, he was fired as Bulgaria’s prosecutor-general.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kamenov, his wife Gergana and two others, believed to be their employees, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-30-constantia-killings-bulgarias-forewarning-to-sa-and-a-global-billion-dollar-crypto-scam/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were assassinated</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the upmarket Cape Town suburb of Constantia on 25 May. All four were shot.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several other intriguing issues have cropped up in connection with the killings.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They include links to a developing global crypto fraud saga now involving a former Luxembourg government spy, who is apparently on the run. </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has also reported that </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-06-17-interpol-on-the-hunt-for-bulgarian-criminal-suspects-linked-to-sa-and-web-of-global-organised-crime/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other wanted Bulgarian suspects</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be, or may have been, in South Africa.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/crime-scene-experts-process-multiple-murder-scene-in-constantia-13/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1739234\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/08-Constantia.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"432\" /></a> <em>Crime scene experts process a multiple murder scene involving four foreign nationals in Constantia on 25 May 2023 in Cape Town, South Africa. (Photo: Gallo Images / Brenton Geach)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>Murder, death and politics</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of them was Angel Hristov, who was wanted by Interpol for organised crime and extortion.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He </span><a href=\"https://www.bta.bg/en/news/bulgaria/468085-convicted-fugitive-angel-hristov-half-of-galev-brothers-dies-in-villa-in-bulga\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reportedly died of a heart attack</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on 3 June, nine days after Kamenov’s murder, after slipping back into Bulgaria.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some Bulgarian media outlets quoted that country’s interior minister, Ivan Demerdzhiev, as saying there needed to be an investigation into </span><a href=\"https://euronewsbulgaria.com/news/15389/demerdzhiev-podoziram-vruzka-mezhdu-latentata-sreshtu-geshev-ubiystvoto-na-kuro-i-smurtta-na-angel-hristov\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whether there were connections</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between Kamenov’s murder, Hristov’s death and what was happening to Geshev, who claimed criminals were targeting him.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 15 June, the president of Bulgaria, Rumen Radev, fired Geshev. A notice on the presidency’s website said: “Today President Rumen Radev </span><a href=\"https://www.president.bg/news7260/darzhavniyat-glava-rumen-radev-osvobodi-ot-dlazhnost-glavniya-prokuror-ivan-geshev.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dismissed Ivan Geshev</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the position of Chief Prosecutor of the Republic of Bulgaria.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The notice did not specify why Geshev was fired, but he has been at the centre of controversies in Bulgaria.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a statement issued on </span><a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/people/%25D0%2598%25D0%25B2%25D0%25B0%25D0%25BD-%25D0%2593%25D0%25B5%25D1%2588%25D0%25B5%25D0%25B2-Ivan-Geshev/100092533561829/?hc_ref=ARRpyP57oSp555wJu4S_0kfV339NjSuyBx-7vabcXRWdwEfDj8RQMTZPY193JjRqPSc&fref=nf&__xts__%5b0%5d=68.ARBxCBbYKcMUVQqeJQMzyaGgwk_9_9uWoyHOIDWCenFsoKbW1ZNMp39I7qAeDgkj4eB4GDNB8h1TLaB8mY13sySuTQDlm4aeM1Di_Wkpk9V7lroR9_WfcPzLRBVik2PQE6vpNrBFxxrKQ0uhV8vUXFJJ_wj50ffEL5P0Kmk9LIkrWNTWn0ffmf6m9s7HPTSefCwxEgvuyzHKgwg6o76-uezCRMR-RG7Dj8u0-el5UvFiuE035WZVXuiFd1LPy9deRs0esK7vV8_c3afZsTg2pvawuXhoO6PaBw7f4i2feMa0Pfg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">his Facebook page</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on 19 June, Geshev said he would “continue the battle for truth and justice” in Bulgaria.</span>\r\n\r\nhttps://youtu.be/rEvG0s74FBk\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also claimed that criminals, some within the state, were targeting the Bulgarian prosecutor’s office.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Our consistent struggle against criminal oligarchs and against thieving party leaders has led in recent months to an unprecedented unification of senior politicians, mafia and shady businesses,” Geshev said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was not the first time he made allegations about state capture in Bulgaria.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And this is where matters loop back to Kamenov.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/08-krasimir-kamenov/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1739237\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/08-Krasimir-Kamenov.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"717\" /></a> <em>Krasimir Kamenov was one of four people murdered in Constantia, Cape Town, on 25 May 2023. (Photo: Interpol website)</em></p>\r\n\r\n<b>‘Targets’ in two countries</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March and April, Geshev told reporters in Bulgaria that </span><a href=\"https://www.segabg.com/hot/category-bulgaria/geshev-pusna-krasimir-kamenov-kuro-za-izdirvane-interpol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kamenov was involved in conspiring against him</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a state capture plot.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 1 May, </span><a href=\"https://apnews.com/article/bulgaria-chief-prosecutor-bomb-attack-e563bd9a3ed061ef68f9bd44b157f742\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an explosive device detonated</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> along a road near Sofia as Geshev’s convoy drove by. Geshev, who was not injured, said he believed the blast had been </span><a href=\"https://prb.bg/en/news/64664-statement-of-the-prosecutor-general-of-the-republic-of-bulgaria-ivan-geshev\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an attempt on his life</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He did not post details of it.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/screenshot-2023-06-25-at-17-15-09/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1742034\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Screenshot-2023-06-25-at-17.15.09.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"957\" /></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of Kamenov, </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> previously reported that the embassy of Bulgaria said that on 6 April – </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-30-constantia-killings-bulgarias-forewarning-to-sa-and-a-global-billion-dollar-crypto-scam/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">49 days before Kamenov and the three others were assassinated</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> – it had told South African authorities that he was in the country and that he faced arrest.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kamenov had been flagged by Interpol as being wanted by Bulgaria in connection with a murder threat, murder and extortion.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He had been wanted in connection with the murder of a former policeman, Lyubomir Ivanov, who was shot in Sofia in March last year.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/08-ruja-ignatova/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1739238\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/08-Ruja-Ignatova.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"765\" /></a> <em>Ruja Ignatova is one of the FBI's top 10 wanted suspects. Sharpened with AI)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>‘Crypto queen’ connections</b></h4>\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also reported that Kamenov may have had information about Ruja Ignatova of Bulgaria, who is among the US </span><a href=\"https://www.fbi.gov/wanted/topten/ruja-ignatova\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Federal Bureau of Investigation’s top 10 most wanted people</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He may have planned to tell what he knew to the US.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ignatova allegedly headed a global crypto scam that operated under various names, including OneCoin and OneLife.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Documents found in the former policeman Ivanov’s home after his assassination reportedly suggested that Ignatova had been murdered in 2018 on a yacht in the Ionian Sea between Italy, Greece and Albania.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was never officially confirmed so she may still be alive.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick:</b><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-06-11-cryptoqueens-link-to-murder-of-bulgarians-in-sa/?utm_source=top_reads_block&utm_campaign=maverick_news\"> <b>Constantia killings and FBI-wanted ‘Cryptoqueen’ Ruja Ignatova’s intriguing SA links</b></a>\r\n<h4><b>Ex-spy on the run</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About two weeks ago it emerged from media reports that another suspect in the OneCoin scam, </span><a href=\"https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-65861495\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frank Schneider – a former spy for the Luxembourg government who went on to run a private intelligence firm – had disappeared</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Schneider had been due to be extradited from France to the US.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A US indictment against him said: “Schneider helped to operate an international fraud scheme involving the sale of a purported cryptocurrency known as ‘OneCoin’ – by, among other things, managing the scheme’s proceeds and evading law enforcement investigations into the scheme.”</span>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Last year I interviewed Frank Schneider. He was under house arrest at the time - facing extradition to the US for his role in the OneCoin scam.</p>\r\nAnd now he’s evaded his electronic surveillance and like his old boss Ruja, he’s on the run. <a href=\"https://twitter.com/ByrnesyGsy?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ByrnesyGsy</a> <a href=\"https://t.co/Du3kvmT0NQ\">https://t.co/Du3kvmT0NQ</a> <a href=\"https://t.co/TJoTKiJdcl\">pic.twitter.com/TJoTKiJdcl</a>\r\n\r\n— Jamie Bartlett (@JamieJBartlett) <a href=\"https://twitter.com/JamieJBartlett/status/1667451750880628736?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 10, 2023</a></blockquote>\r\n<script async src=\"https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"></script>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The BBC reported that a warrant for Schneider’s arrest had been issued on 16 May, suggesting that it was already known by then that he was dodging the authorities.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schneider, therefore, became a wanted man nine days before Kamenov’s murder in South Africa and about a month before Geshev was fired.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The OneCoin saga is developing further in other quarters as well.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Paper trails</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 18 June, Jonathan Levy, an attorney representing some OneCoin victims around the world, wrote to Bulgaria’s Ministry of Justice. He pointed out that the scheme had been operating in that country while Geshev was chief prosecutor, and that this was while elements of the state were opting to work with criminals, not against them.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levy’s letter was accompanied by a declaration by Duncan Arthur, a citizen of Ireland and South Africa who was once the compliance head for Standard Bank Africa.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arthur also previously worked for Ignatova and, after her disappearance in 2017, her brother Konstantin Ignatov. Ignatov, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-06-11-cryptoqueens-link-to-murder-of-bulgarians-in-sa/?utm_source=top_reads_block&utm_campaign=maverick_news\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who visited Cape Town in 2018</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was arrested in the US in 2019 in Arthur’s presence.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Meeting ‘Krasimir’</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a declaration to Bulgaria’s Ministry of Justice, dated 16 June 2023, Arthur said: “I was employed by the now-defunct English company RavenR Capital Ltd (‘RRC’) beginning in October 2016. "description": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The assassination of Krasimir Kamenov, wanted for crimes including murder in Bulgaria, and three others in Cape Town last month, has taken on a political hue.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is because of comments about Kamenov made by former Bulgarian official Ivan Geshev and what has happened to Geshev’s place in government. About two weeks ago, he was fired as Bulgaria’s prosecutor-general.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kamenov, his wife Gergana and two others, believed to be their employees, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-30-constantia-killings-bulgarias-forewarning-to-sa-and-a-global-billion-dollar-crypto-scam/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were assassinated</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the upmarket Cape Town suburb of Constantia on 25 May. All four were shot.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several other intriguing issues have cropped up in connection with the killings.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They include links to a developing global crypto fraud saga now involving a former Luxembourg government spy, who is apparently on the run. </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has also reported that </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-06-17-interpol-on-the-hunt-for-bulgarian-criminal-suspects-linked-to-sa-and-web-of-global-organised-crime/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other wanted Bulgarian suspects</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be, or may have been, in South Africa.</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1739234\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"720\"]<a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/crime-scene-experts-process-multiple-murder-scene-in-constantia-13/\"><img class=\"size-full wp-image-1739234\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/08-Constantia.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"432\" /></a> <em>Crime scene experts process a multiple murder scene involving four foreign nationals in Constantia on 25 May 2023 in Cape Town, South Africa. (Photo: Gallo Images / Brenton Geach)</em>[/caption]\r\n<h4><b>Murder, death and politics</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of them was Angel Hristov, who was wanted by Interpol for organised crime and extortion.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He </span><a href=\"https://www.bta.bg/en/news/bulgaria/468085-convicted-fugitive-angel-hristov-half-of-galev-brothers-dies-in-villa-in-bulga\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reportedly died of a heart attack</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on 3 June, nine days after Kamenov’s murder, after slipping back into Bulgaria.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some Bulgarian media outlets quoted that country’s interior minister, Ivan Demerdzhiev, as saying there needed to be an investigation into </span><a href=\"https://euronewsbulgaria.com/news/15389/demerdzhiev-podoziram-vruzka-mezhdu-latentata-sreshtu-geshev-ubiystvoto-na-kuro-i-smurtta-na-angel-hristov\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whether there were connections</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between Kamenov’s murder, Hristov’s death and what was happening to Geshev, who claimed criminals were targeting him.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 15 June, the president of Bulgaria, Rumen Radev, fired Geshev. (Photo: Interpol website)</em>[/caption]\r\n\r\n<b>‘Targets’ in two countries</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March and April, Geshev told reporters in Bulgaria that </span><a href=\"https://www.segabg.com/hot/category-bulgaria/geshev-pusna-krasimir-kamenov-kuro-za-izdirvane-interpol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kamenov was involved in conspiring against him</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a state capture plot.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 1 May, </span><a href=\"https://apnews.com/article/bulgaria-chief-prosecutor-bomb-attack-e563bd9a3ed061ef68f9bd44b157f742\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an explosive device detonated</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> along a road near Sofia as Geshev’s convoy drove by. Geshev, who was not injured, said he believed the blast had been </span><a href=\"https://prb.bg/en/news/64664-statement-of-the-prosecutor-general-of-the-republic-of-bulgaria-ivan-geshev\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an attempt on his life</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He did not post details of it.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/screenshot-2023-06-25-at-17-15-09/\"><img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1742034\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Screenshot-2023-06-25-at-17.15.09.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"957\" /></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of Kamenov, </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> previously reported that the embassy of Bulgaria said that on 6 April – </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-30-constantia-killings-bulgarias-forewarning-to-sa-and-a-global-billion-dollar-crypto-scam/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">49 days before Kamenov and the three others were assassinated</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> – it had told South African authorities that he was in the country and that he faced arrest.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kamenov had been flagged by Interpol as being wanted by Bulgaria in connection with a murder threat, murder and extortion.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He had been wanted in connection with the murder of a former policeman, Lyubomir Ivanov, who was shot in Sofia in March last year.</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1739238\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"720\"]<a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/08-ruja-ignatova/\"><img class=\"size-full wp-image-1739238\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/08-Ruja-Ignatova.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"765\" /></a> <em>Ruja Ignatova is one of the FBI's top 10 wanted suspects. Sharpened with AI)</em>[/caption]\r\n<h4><b>‘Crypto queen’ connections</b></h4>\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also reported that Kamenov may have had information about Ruja Ignatova of Bulgaria, who is among the US </span><a href=\"https://www.fbi.gov/wanted/topten/ruja-ignatova\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Federal Bureau of Investigation’s top 10 most wanted people</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He may have planned to tell what he knew to the US.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ignatova allegedly headed a global crypto scam that operated under various names, including OneCoin and OneLife.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Documents found in the former policeman Ivanov’s home after his assassination reportedly suggested that Ignatova had been murdered in 2018 on a yacht in the Ionian Sea between Italy, Greece and Albania.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was never officially confirmed so she may still be alive.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick:</b><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-06-11-cryptoqueens-link-to-murder-of-bulgarians-in-sa/?utm_source=top_reads_block&utm_campaign=maverick_news\"> <b>Constantia killings and FBI-wanted ‘Cryptoqueen’ Ruja Ignatova’s intriguing SA links</b></a>\r\n<h4><b>Ex-spy on the run</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About two weeks ago it emerged from media reports that another suspect in the OneCoin scam, </span><a href=\"https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-65861495\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frank Schneider – a former spy for the Luxembourg government who went on to run a private intelligence firm – had disappeared</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Schneider had been due to be extradited from France to the US.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A US indictment against him said: “Schneider helped to operate an international fraud scheme involving the sale of a purported cryptocurrency known as ‘OneCoin’ – by, among other things, managing the scheme’s proceeds and evading law enforcement investigations into the scheme.”</span>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Last year I interviewed Frank Schneider. He was under house arrest at the time - facing extradition to the US for his role in the OneCoin scam.</p>\r\nAnd now he’s evaded his electronic surveillance and like his old boss Ruja, he’s on the run. <a href=\"https://twitter.com/ByrnesyGsy?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ByrnesyGsy</a> <a href=\"https://t.co/Du3kvmT0NQ\">https://t.co/Du3kvmT0NQ</a> <a href=\"https://t.co/TJoTKiJdcl\">pic.twitter.com/TJoTKiJdcl</a>\r\n\r\n— Jamie Bartlett (@JamieJBartlett) <a href=\"https://twitter.com/JamieJBartlett/status/1667451750880628736?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 10, 2023</a></blockquote>\r\n<script async src=\"https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"></script>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The BBC reported that a warrant for Schneider’s arrest had been issued on 16 May, suggesting that it was already known by then that he was dodging the authorities.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schneider, therefore, became a wanted man nine days before Kamenov’s murder in South Africa and about a month before Geshev was fired.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The OneCoin saga is developing further in other quarters as well.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Paper trails</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 18 June, Jonathan Levy, an attorney representing some OneCoin victims around the world, wrote to Bulgaria’s Ministry of Justice. He pointed out that the scheme had been operating in that country while Geshev was chief prosecutor, and that this was while elements of the state were opting to work with criminals, not against them.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levy’s letter was accompanied by a declaration by Duncan Arthur, a citizen of Ireland and South Africa who was once the compliance head for Standard Bank Africa.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arthur also previously worked for Ignatova and, after her disappearance in 2017, her brother Konstantin Ignatov. Ignatov, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-06-11-cryptoqueens-link-to-murder-of-bulgarians-in-sa/?utm_source=top_reads_block&utm_campaign=maverick_news\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who visited Cape Town in 2018</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was arrested in the US in 2019 in Arthur’s presence.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Meeting ‘Krasimir’</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a declaration to Bulgaria’s Ministry of Justice, dated 16 June 2023, Arthur said: “I was employed by the now-defunct English company RavenR Capital Ltd (‘RRC’) beginning in October 2016. RRC was originally the family investment office for OneCoin’s CEO Ruja Ignatova.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another part of the declaration said: “[A] visitor to the RRC office [in the UK] in 2016 was a Bulgarian named ‘Krasimir’ who may have been Krasimir Kamenov who was recently assassinated in Cape Town with three other individuals under circumstances suggesting an organized crime ‘hit’.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“The Krasimir I spoke with at RRC London made small talk with me specifically about Cape Town when he learned I was South African.” </span><b>DM</b>\r\n\r\n<em>This article first appeared in Daily Maverick's sister newspaper DM26, which is available countrywide for R29.</em>\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1740284\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/DM-24062023.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"900\" />",
