A prisoner of war bathes and pours water over himself in a makeshift detention camp operated by the People's Defense Force (PDF) in an undisclosed jungle area in Myanmar, 21 April 2025 (issued 07 May 2025). Around 200 prisoners of war are being held at a makeshift detention facility run by the rebel People’s Defense Forces (PDF), the armed wing of Myanmar’s shadow National Unity Government (NUG). Among them is Deputy Lieutenant Colonel Aung Kyaw Soe of the Myanmar military, captured on 14 March 2024 after the fall of Kyeikdon base in Kayin State, which endured a six-week siege and over 1,300 drone attacks. He described humane treatment and a structured daily routine in captivity but voiced concern for his family and uncertainty about the future. “We didn’t know what kind of treatment we’d face—execution, beatings, or something else. However, up to now, there has been no beating or abuse toward the captured personnel," he said. "There are many battles happening. There are many losses, many deaths. On top of that, we are also suffering from natural disasters like earthquakes. If all of this continues, there won’t be any benefit. As I said earlier, whatever the solution may be, it should come through dialogue and negotiation. If we can reach peace through political negotiation, it would be the best outcome.” According to camp commander Ko Nay La, the detainees’ rights are being respected in line with international norms. Prisoners will be interrogated under the NUG’s Prisoner of War Act, with amnesty granted to forced conscripts and porters, while others may face charges, including war crimes. The ongoing conflict began after Myanmar’s military coup in February 2021, which ousted the elected civilian government and triggered a widespread resistance movement. EPA-EFE/KAUNG ZAW HEIN
