"description": "Daily Maverick is an independent online news publication and weekly print newspaper in South Africa.\r\n\r\nIt is known for breaking some of the defining stories of South Africa in the past decade, including the Marikana Massacre, in which the South African Police Service killed 34 miners in August 2012.\r\n\r\nIt also investigated the Gupta Leaks, which won the 2019 Global Shining Light Award.\r\n\r\nThat investigation was credited with exposing the Indian-born Gupta family and former President Jacob Zuma for their role in the systemic political corruption referred to as state capture.\r\n\r\nIn 2018, co-founder and editor-in-chief Branislav ‘Branko’ Brkic was awarded the country’s prestigious Nat Nakasa Award, recognised for initiating the investigative collaboration after receiving the hard drive that included the email tranche.\r\n\r\nIn 2021, co-founder and CEO Styli Charalambous also received the award.\r\n\r\nDaily Maverick covers the latest political and news developments in South Africa with breaking news updates, analysis, opinions and more.",

Below we have included the <i>crime rates</i>, calculated with <a href=\"http://africacheck.us9.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=b26525b6a93aad574810535a6&id=dc6a90016c&e=2afa1d3d9b\"><span class=\"s3\">Statistics South Africa’s mid-year population estimates</span></a>. The crime rate allows us to see whether crimes have increased or decreased in relation to the size of the population.</span></p>\r\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">We summarised crimes of public interest in this factsheet.</span></p>\r\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s4\"><a href=\"http://africacheck.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b26525b6a93aad574810535a6&id=4a8c5bcabe&e=2afa1d3d9b\">READ: Understanding crime statistics in South Africa – what you need to know</a></span></p>\r\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>CONTACT CRIMES</b></span></p>\r\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>1. The sexual offences rate decreased from 99 in 2014/15 to 94.3 in 2015/16.</span></p>\r\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">This decrease is not a positive sign, according to the <a href=\"http://africacheck.us9.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=b26525b6a93aad574810535a6&id=108ded58df&e=2afa1d3d9b\"><span class=\"s3\">Institute for Security Studies</span></a>: “We are deeply concerned about the decrease of 3.2% in sexual offences.
