It’s been just six years since Eritrean professional cyclist Biniam Girmay gravitated towards the sport competitively. Yet, in that short time his impact has been significant. He is far from done, with his eyes firmly fixed on an Olympic Games podium placing.

Following the culmination of the 2024 Tour de France, the talk of the town is Tadej Pogačar. The 25-year-old Slovenian claimed his third Tour de France overall success.

He did it in dominant fashion too, finishing six minutes and 17 seconds ahead of 2023 winner Jonas Vingegaard in the 21-stage cycling event.

Another cyclist used the historic race to showcase his quality: Eritrean professional cyclist Biniam Girmay.

The 24-year-old Intermarché-Wanty Team rider walked away with the green jersey – which is awarded to the best sprinter and is the most coveted after the overall leader’s yellow jersey. Girmay held off competition from Jasper Philipsen of Alpecin-Deceuninck and Bryan Coquard of Cofidis to claim the prize.

The green jersey was a bonus for Girmay. He had already made history in stage three of the race. He won that segment of the contest to become the first black person to win a Tour de France stage.

South Africans Robbie Hunter and Daryl Impey laid the foundation as the first African cyclists to win a Tour de France stage. They claimed a stage win each in 2007 and 2019.

In 2024, Girmay took the baton from the duo and pedalled to a massive three stage victories. In addition to success in stage three, Girmay also claimed victory in stages eight and 12 of the event.

“Since I started cycling, I never dreamed of being part of the Tour de France, but now I can’t believe it,” Girmay said after his historic first stage success.

“I want to thank all Eritreans and Africans. We must be proud. Now we’re really a part of the big races … It’s our moment, it’s our time.

“I can’t find the words. I didn’t come to this Tour de France aiming to win the green jersey, but simply to show my abilities,” Girmay stated after his green jersey victory was rubberstamped.

“You could say I’ve achieved that. I’m grateful to everyone who helped me finish this Tour de France with the green jersey. When I woke up, I thanked God for this unforgettable day. I am overwhelmed with emotions,” the 24-year-old added.

“My journey in this Tour is a new chapter in cycling history for us Eritreans and Africans. We have been cycling for a long time, but winning stages and a green jersey is now achievable. That’s something special.”

The journey begins

Girmay gravitated towards cycling through the influence of fellow professional cyclist and cousin Meron Teshome Hagos. In 2018, Girmay joined the World Cycling Centre. The Switzerland-based training centre has produced the likes of Daniel Teklehaimanot and Chris Froome.

In the same year he joined the Cycling Centre, Girmay highlighted his quality as he became a triple African champion. Then a teenager, he shone at the African Junior Road Championships as he clinched three gold medals. Girmay won the road race, the time trial and also contributed to the team gold.

In 2022 – a year after claiming silver in the U23 world championship – he became the first black African to clinch a Grand Tour stage victory after claiming a win at the Giro d’Italia. His victory was dampened by an injury while celebrating the milestone. A champagne cork struck his eye during the podium celebration – ending his campaign.

Following an outstanding 2024, halfway through, Girmay is now eyeing Olympic success.

“I am convinced that we can still achieve great things together. I am already looking towards the next goals, starting with the Olympic Games! I am really glad to continue this story with my beloved team,” said Girmay after recently signing a contract extension until 2028 with his team.

“The Games are the next big step. The plan I made with [Intermarché-Wanty performance manager] Aike Visbeek was to further improve my form during the Tour. That way I would be in my best condition at the start in Paris. But I’ve been in top form in the Tour. That is something good and I will take it from there,” Girmay told WielerFlits.

“I would never go [to the Olympics] if I didn’t think I had a chance. I feel super good at the moment. So, why wouldn’t I go for a medal? That was already my plan that I made together with the team. I’m going for the podium,” he added.

Following his outstanding success during the Tour, a medal in Paris may further fuel a change of mindsets in a sport that has been historically viewed as white. In this year’s Tour de France he was the only black rider, among 176 participants. DM
