"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monday marked the </span><a href=\"https://www.un.org/en/observances/living-in-peace-day\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United Nations International Day of Living Together in Peace</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You may laugh. Where, you might ask, is the United Nations, as the world moves towards new and ever more dangerous wars? </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And… where is the peace?</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year’s theme was </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“</span>End racism. Build peace<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">” and according to the UN the day was meant to be dedicated to “working towards a world free of racism and racial discrimination. A world where compassion and empathy overcome suspicion and hatred.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, it occurred two days after a </span><a href=\"https://www.cbsnews.com/video/buffalo-shooting-investigated-as-hate-crime-and-racially-motivated-violent-extremism/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hate crime in Buffalo</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the US that targeted people purely because they were black. Ten people died.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Globally the picture is not pretty.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Across the world there are darkening clouds of war and, as the peace movement points out, governments are responding to war not by mobilising and negotiating for peace, but by funding and threatening further war.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In all but name NATO and Russia are at war. One fears that it will not be </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this becomes a formal state of affairs.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1266494\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/MC-Tues-Editorial-17May_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"447\" /> The theme of this year's <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> International Day of Living Together in Peace</span> was 'End racism. There’s a killing being made from killing, as hyper-remunerated CEOs of arms companies like Raytheon have unashamedly acknowledged, </span><a href=\"https://responsiblestatecraft.org/2022/01/28/big-war-ceos-theres-chaos-in-the-world-and-our-prospects-are-excellent/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">telling shareholders in January 2022</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that a war over Ukraine was a “benefit” and “increased opportunities for international sales”. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2021, according to the reputable </span><a href=\"https://sipri.org/media/press-release/2022/world-military-expenditure-passes-2-trillion-first-time\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI),</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> world military expenditure exceeded </span>$2-trillion <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the first time</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1266498\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/MC-Tues-Editorial-17May_5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"423\" />\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can download the full SIPRI report </span><a href=\"https://sipri.org/publications/2022/sipri-fact-sheets/trends-world-military-expenditure-2021\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the Russian invasion of Ukraine, these numbers are likely to increase dramatically in 2022. It is estimated that Russia is </span><a href=\"https://www.newsweek.com/russia-spending-estimated-900-million-day-ukraine-war-1704383\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spending $900-million a day</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the war. According to the </span><a href=\"https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/10/us/politics/congress-ukraine-aid-questions.html\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Times</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the US Congress has so far passed more than $50-billion to support Ukraine “with few questions asked”, and is spending $100-million a day, according to some estimates.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new arms race has clearly begun.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conflicts simmer all over the world: in Israel, in Yemen, in South Sudan, potentially in the South China sea.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is bad for all life. But as we </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-02-22-damn-you-masters-of-war-war-over-ukraine-threatens-social-justice-globally/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pointed out in an editorial</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> days before Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it’s also bad for social justice, bad for equality and bad for climate crisis mitigation. There are life-saving and planet-saving ways to spend such vast amounts of money.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/f/frankie_goes_to_hollywood/war_lyrics.html\">War, oh lord, there’s got to be a better way</a>.\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his book </span><a href=\"https://www.amazon.com/How-Spend-Trillion-Dollars-mysteries-ebook/dp/B08DDK211P\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to Spend a Trillion Dollars: the Ten Global Problems We Can Actually Fix</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Scientist</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> senior editor </span><a href=\"https://www.newscientist.com/author/rowan-hooper/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rowan Hooper</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> points out that “the UN estimates that it would cost $175-billion per year to eliminate extreme poverty around the world. To achieve all 17 </span><a href=\"https://sdgs.un.org/goals\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sustainable Development Goals</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including action on global health, climate change, biodiversity, sustainable housing, industry and food production and consumption, the UN puts the figure at $2-trillion per year. The </span><a href=\"https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/may/14/cash-coal-cars-and-trees-what-progress-has-been-made-since-cop26?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cowardly and insufficient targets</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of COP-26 have already been surrendered. </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, catastrophe awaits our children and their children.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, according to the expert-informed calculations of Hooper, with a trillion dollars – half the amount we spend on arms per annum – “we have a chance to change the world – and perhaps save it”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, our governments have decided not to save the world. Many of them are in the pockets of what Shadow World Investigations founder</span><a href=\"https://shadowworldinvestigations.org/about/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Andrew Feinstein</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> calls “the global national security elite”. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, while world leaders declare “insufficient funds” for the climate crisis and realising fundamental human rights, there are unlimited funds for war. It’s mind-boggling, debilitating… and meant to be that way.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Africa has its own wars: against women, against Abahlali baseMjondolo, against foreigners, against children. In this context, for those on the receiving end of domestic violence, the war in Ukraine feels a long way away. But while you might not feel the ground shudder with bombs, or see the earth colour with blood, the sense of distance is an illusion. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though it may sometimes look like it, this is not a war game, watched nightly on cable news, with goodies and baddies shooting it out in the underground tunnels of the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is already a global conflict with global consequences. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Predictably, as in all past wars, the media have given little attention to peace movements that are stuttering into existence across the world, braving jingoism and calumny. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Putin = bad. Ukraine = good. True. More or less. But in between these two poles there is little nuance to the analysis of the war, little attempt to help the public understand what led up to it, little lasting focus on who’s making money from it, who’s lobbying behind the scenes for it, who’s political careers depend on it. </span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1266497\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/MC-Tues-Editorial-17May_4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"442\" /> Part of an art project 'Screams of Souls' by florist and volunteer Ulyana Datsyshyn in Lviv, Ukraine on 15 May 2022. Many respected analysts, like Jeffrey Sachs, have </span><a href=\"https://edition.cnn.com/2022/04/20/opinions/sachs-ukraine-negotiation-op-ed/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">called for peace</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> negotiations. War is not realpolitik, it is elite politik. People like Nelson Mandela showed the advantage of choosing peace and negotiation, even with the worst enemy, rather than perpetual destructive conflict. Where the poor pay. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The danger is that if ordinary people do not demand that our governments break the new cycle of war NOW, the world will be tipped into a vortex that will see an intensification of conflict for years to come. </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-02-06-how-much-time-have-we-really-got-five-years/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time is against us</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We need to stand up for peace and social justice.</span> Everywhere. Without discrimination. Now.\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The </span><a href=\"https://www.stopwar.org.uk/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stop the War</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> campaign in the UK is calling for an international day of action on 25 June demanding “</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the withdrawal of Russian troops, an end to the military escalation by the NATO countries and for all efforts to be focused on finding a negotiated solution to this terrible war”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was about to write “civil society needs to mobilise…” but scratch that out: </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“civil society needs to mobilise…”</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is a call that should be supported by our government, civil society, faiths and businesses. It’s time that we discarded the artificial casing of “civil society”, etc and made ourselves seen and heard as human beings who have no planet B to run to.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 25 June all of South Africa needs to be seen and heard calling for peace and social justice. There’s a killing being made from killing, as hyper-remunerated CEOs of arms companies like Raytheon have unashamedly acknowledged, </span><a href=\"https://responsiblestatecraft.org/2022/01/28/big-war-ceos-theres-chaos-in-the-world-and-our-prospects-are-excellent/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">telling shareholders in January 2022</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that a war over Ukraine was a “benefit” and “increased opportunities for international sales”. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2021, according to the reputable </span><a href=\"https://sipri.org/media/press-release/2022/world-military-expenditure-passes-2-trillion-first-time\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI),</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> world military expenditure exceeded </span>$2-trillion <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the first time</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1266498\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/MC-Tues-Editorial-17May_5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"423\" />\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can download the full SIPRI report </span><a href=\"https://sipri.org/publications/2022/sipri-fact-sheets/trends-world-military-expenditure-2021\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the Russian invasion of Ukraine, these numbers are likely to increase dramatically in 2022. It is estimated that Russia is </span><a href=\"https://www.newsweek.com/russia-spending-estimated-900-million-day-ukraine-war-1704383\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spending $900-million a day</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the war. According to the </span><a href=\"https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/10/us/politics/congress-ukraine-aid-questions.html\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Times</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the US Congress has so far passed more than $50-billion to support Ukraine “with few questions asked”, and is spending $100-million a day, according to some estimates.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new arms race has clearly begun.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conflicts simmer all over the world: in Israel, in Yemen, in South Sudan, potentially in the South China sea.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is bad for all life. But as we </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-02-22-damn-you-masters-of-war-war-over-ukraine-threatens-social-justice-globally/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pointed out in an editorial</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> days before Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it’s also bad for social justice, bad for equality and bad for climate crisis mitigation. There are life-saving and planet-saving ways to spend such vast amounts of money.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/f/frankie_goes_to_hollywood/war_lyrics.html\">War, oh lord, there’s got to be a better way</a>.\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his book </span><a href=\"https://www.amazon.com/How-Spend-Trillion-Dollars-mysteries-ebook/dp/B08DDK211P\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to Spend a Trillion Dollars: the Ten Global Problems We Can Actually Fix</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Scientist</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> senior editor </span><a href=\"https://www.newscientist.com/author/rowan-hooper/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rowan Hooper</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> points out that “the UN estimates that it would cost $175-billion per year to eliminate extreme poverty around the world. To achieve all 17 </span><a href=\"https://sdgs.un.org/goals\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sustainable Development Goals</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including action on global health, climate change, biodiversity, sustainable housing, industry and food production and consumption, the UN puts the figure at $2-trillion per year. The </span><a href=\"https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/may/14/cash-coal-cars-and-trees-what-progress-has-been-made-since-cop26?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cowardly and insufficient targets</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of COP-26 have already been surrendered. </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, catastrophe awaits our children and their children.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, according to the expert-informed calculations of Hooper, with a trillion dollars – half the amount we spend on arms per annum – “we have a chance to change the world – and perhaps save it”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, our governments have decided not to save the world. Many of them are in the pockets of what Shadow World Investigations founder</span><a href=\"https://shadowworldinvestigations.org/about/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Andrew Feinstein</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> calls “the global national security elite”. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, while world leaders declare “insufficient funds” for the climate crisis and realising fundamental human rights, there are unlimited funds for war. It’s mind-boggling, debilitating… and meant to be that way.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Africa has its own wars: against women, against Abahlali baseMjondolo, against foreigners, against children. In this context, for those on the receiving end of domestic violence, the war in Ukraine feels a long way away. But while you might not feel the ground shudder with bombs, or see the earth colour with blood, the sense of distance is an illusion. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though it may sometimes look like it, this is not a war game, watched nightly on cable news, with goodies and baddies shooting it out in the underground tunnels of the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is already a global conflict with global consequences. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Predictably, as in all past wars, the media have given little attention to peace movements that are stuttering into existence across the world, braving jingoism and calumny. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Putin = bad. Ukraine = good. True. More or less. Many respected analysts, like Jeffrey Sachs, have </span><a href=\"https://edition.cnn.com/2022/04/20/opinions/sachs-ukraine-negotiation-op-ed/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">called for peace</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> negotiations. War is not realpolitik, it is elite politik. People like Nelson Mandela showed the advantage of choosing peace and negotiation, even with the worst enemy, rather than perpetual destructive conflict. Where the poor pay. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The danger is that if ordinary people do not demand that our governments break the new cycle of war NOW, the world will be tipped into a vortex that will see an intensification of conflict for years to come. </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-02-06-how-much-time-have-we-really-got-five-years/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time is against us</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We need to stand up for peace and social justice.</span> Everywhere. Without discrimination. Now.\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The </span><a href=\"https://www.stopwar.org.uk/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stop the War</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> campaign in the UK is calling for an international day of action on 25 June demanding “</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the withdrawal of Russian troops, an end to the military escalation by the NATO countries and for all efforts to be focused on finding a negotiated solution to this terrible war”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was about to write “civil society needs to mobilise…” but scratch that out: </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“civil society needs to mobilise…”</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is a call that should be supported by our government, civil society, faiths and businesses. It’s time that we discarded the artificial casing of “civil society”, etc and made ourselves seen and heard as human beings who have no planet B to run to.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 25 June all of South Africa needs to be seen and heard calling for peace and social justice.
