ANC gags NEC members as MK party rages over Mantashe ‘tribalism’ comment

While the Electoral Commission of South Africa continues to count ballots, ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula turns the screw on ANC National Executive Committee members following National Chairperson Gwede Mantashe’s remarks at the National Results Operation Centre.
ANC gags NEC members as MK party rages over Mantashe ‘tribalism’ comment

The ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has issued strict instructions to ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) members about visiting the National Results Operation Centre (ROC) at the Gallagher Convention Centre, Midrand- without authorisation.

In a letter to NEC members, dated 30 May, Mbalula states that there are members who have been deployed to the ROC and anyone else who has not been requested to be there, should stay away from the centre.

“We urge NEC Members to refrain from visiting the ROC in an uncoordinated manner and commenting on the 2024 National and Provincial Election results [NPE],” the letter reads.

Members of the ANC’s top brass who have been deployed to the ROC are the party’s First Deputy Secretary-General Nomvula Mokonyane, ANC head of elections Mdumiseni Ntuli, NEC member Nkenke Kekana and national spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri.

Mantashe's name is not on the list.

“The ANC will issue a formal communication regarding the 2024 NPE once more than half the results (approximately 10 million votes) have been announced. This statement will be guided by the ANC National Officials based on a report by the National Elections Team.

“The NEC will receive a report on the 2024 NPE and its outcomes. The date of the next NEC meeting will be communicated,” Mbalula further stated.

This follows comments made by the party’s National Chairperson Gwede Mantashe at the ROC on Thursday.

Mantashe said he was surprised by former president Jacob Zuma’s uMkhonto Wesizwe (MK party) party showing at the polls. The MK party has been dominating the KZN leaderboard and appears to have surpassed the EFF as the third-largest party.

“I don’t think we should lock ourselves into Zulu tribalism. Tribalism is a backward form of politics, it has its timeframe and then disappears. If that is the factor, I am not worried,” according to Mantashe.

The MK party then condemned Mantashe for his utterances along with DA Federal Council chair Helen Zille who said that the MK party is “eating away” votes from all parties because people are voting on what she called “ethnic identity”.

“The MK party unequivocally denounces the obnoxious and toxic remarks by Gwede Mantashe of the ANC, supported by Helen Zille of the DA, which characterises the electoral success of the MK party in KZN as a product of ‘Zulu tribalism’.”

“The deeply disrespectful and insulting perspective not only undermines the political agency of the Zulu people but also dismisses their legitimate political choices as mere tribal affiliations. Such divisive rhetoric portrays the Zulu people as non-thinking and sheep-like, following an outdated narrative that is both dangerous and offensive,” the party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela said in a statement.

He further went on to mention that KZN citizens were punishing the ANC for mismanaging the country.

“The intellectual laziness from both the ANC of Ramaphosa and its incoming coalition partner, the DA, enrages the MK party … as it threatened the building of a united, non-sexist and prosperous SA, the MK party strives to build,” he said. DM

I have no time for the likes of Gwede Mantashe, but his comments about tribal tendencies in KZN is not far from the truth. U Baba holds tribal sway with the Zulu clans.

What i find strange in no one's comments is the fact that all opposition parties (and by that I mean those parties that are still bound by some form of ethical responsibility and are less tainted by corruption) have failed in doing the one thing South Africa needs - form a united opposition. Instead of fighting each other for their own political agenda they should have found a way in the last four years to make a viable alternative. Say what you want about 1994 but I remember that regardless of manifesto all opposition parties where unified in that they wanted to abolish apartheid. Why is it that now, and in the last four years, instead of unify and fight against the trifecta of decay (ANC, EFF, MK) the whole election is treated like a circus and not taken seriously? Failure to educate communities, lack of community engagement in party building, lack of big business involvement in community upliftment and employment programs to name a few. Then add in the fact of low voter registration, low voter turnout and poor systems and you have our current situation. It's time many pack their bags and seek asylum overseas.

Well I agree with Mantashe 100% and he must not apologize for because it is s fact. 2, However it is a known fact that the Xhosa people like Mantashe and Mbalula prefer only Xhosa around them unless if they are using you are tribes especially if they did not undergo initian or circumcision they are said to be Amankwenkwe or lower men or men not to be taken seriously. In the Free State which is predominantly Sotho unfortunately one sees mainly Xhosas at the helm. It is their save heaven. In the Eastern Cape a Sotho at the helm is so scarce like an Albino Policeman (skaars Soos Albino Poliseman)3, Well the media is unfriendly to Zuma without any provocation from his side. He is attacked left and right which tells that there is an agenda against him, that is why I support him against media and court cases which are fabrications in my view. I am a stouch ANC supporter but I follow facts and truths only. In my church we are taught not to judge. I however agree that once you assume a public office be prepared to be judged and be scrutinized on each and every action. I however feel that for Zuma the attack is too much and senseless and somehow barbaric

The only thing this election proves is that political parties (all of them) are beyond their sell-by date. It is time for independent candidates who represent their individual constituencies (where they live!) and who have independent personal audits of their finances/lifestyles every year. When they fail their constituencies, they get booted out! Political parties are ideologically driven heirarchies, usually patriarchal and inflexible. The other thing this election proves is that South Africans struggle to put themselves into the shoes of others, to understand where/why they act the way they do. If we did, and we abolished political parties, we would get on better, unify the country and deal with our problems better. Currently, we have no vision for our own future, so we grasp at stupid straws and bicker about politics. Let's get on with fixing the country!

People only get offended when an accusation is true. The IEC map shows a direct correlation between MK support and Zulu population distribution. Also, a similar correlation between PA and Coloured population distrubition. And, for that matter, a correlation between DA support and White population distribution. A similar trends are noticeable with FF+ and IFP. I thought that the voting was 'tribal' before the Mantashe and Zille comments were reported. I am sure many other people thought the same. If we are all wrong, then please explain why.
