"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The African National Congress (ANC) is often painted these days as a party lacking a moral compass, but events at Parliament on Tuesday revealed that — at least partially — to be a slanderous lie.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What a sight it was to behold the likes of Mervyn Dirks, Lindiwe Sisulu and Bongani Bongo acting in accordance with the dictates of their own steely ethical codes, which simply would not allow them to vote down the independent report into President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala scandal.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MPs of such high-minded principles could not be expected to collude on a potential cover-up of corruption allegations against a sitting president. The very idea! These paragons of virtue would never stand for such a thing.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What’s that? Why yes, that </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the very same</span><a href=\"https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/2017-11-18-bongo-tried-to-bribe-parliament-evidence-leader-of-eskom-state-capture-inquiry/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bongani Bongo who allegedly tried to bribe</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the leader of a parliamentary investigation into corruption at Eskom. Yes, the one who allegedly offered a “blank cheque” to make disagreeable evidence go away. He’s the same chap who had to abstain from the parliamentary vote on Tuesday because his unyielding conscience would not permit him to dismiss the findings of the Phala Phala investigation.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, yes, that </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the same Mervyn Dirks who was</span><a href=\"https://www.news24.com/citypress/voices/editorial-mervyn-dirks-must-be-defended-20220123\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">described by </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">City Press</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in January</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as an “ardent supporter of former president Jacob Zuma and a prominent member of the so-called Radical Economic Transformation (RET) faction”. Yes, the same Mervyn Dirks who</span><a href=\"https://omny.fm/shows/beyond-the-headline/mervyn-dirks-criticized-me-when-i-stood-against-zu\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">criticised former ANC MP Makhosi Khoza</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when she took a stance against Zuma over corruption. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, goodness, that </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the same Lindiwe Sisulu who</span><a href=\"https://www.timeslive.co.za/politics/2021-03-15-lindiwe-sisulus-good-governance-and-toxic-corruption-statement-angers-many/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dismissed the Zondo Commission</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as an “expensive way of dealing with corruption”, and referred to judges like Raymond Zondo as “mentally colonised”. The very same. What of it?</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The message sent by these individuals is downright inspiring in these uncertain times: it is never, ever too late to suddenly — almost overnight — develop an extreme distaste for corruption, and an absolute passion for accountability.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it’s not just them. Damascene conversions are everywhere.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Would you, for instance, like to see the ANC elect a leader at the party conference this weekend who is “organically incapable of corruption”?</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course you would — and the good news is, there’s one available! His name is Zweli Mkhize, and he was</span><a href=\"https://ewn.co.za/2022/11/16/anc-kzn-supports-zweli-mkhize-who-s-incapable-of-corruption-to-lead-the-party\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">described by the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as “organically incapable of self-seeking and corruption” when the province announced it was backing Mkhize for president.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Correct: the Zweli Mkhize who had to step down as health minister after the exposure of the</span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-05-23-exposed-dohs-r150m-digital-vibes-scandal-zweli-mkhize-associates-charged-millions-for-covid-19-media-briefings/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital Vibes scandal</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which saw tens of millions of rands in government funds allocated to the health department in the middle of a public health crisis allegedly channelled to Mkhize’s friends and family.</span>\r\n\r\n<hr />\r\n\r\n<strong>Visit <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za?utm_source=direct&utm_medium=in_article_link&utm_campaign=homepage\"><em>Daily Maverick's</em> home page</a> for more news, analysis and investigations</strong>\r\n\r\n<hr />\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Must</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> we be so nit-picky? Yes, it is indeed the same Zweli Mkhize who was KZN finance MEC in 2006</span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-10-07-r1-88m-from-digital-vibes-deal-funnelled-to-may-mkhizes-farm-loan-familys-cut-climbs-to-r8-7m/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when his wife was granted</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an R11.8-million loan by the Ithala Development Finance Corporation — essentially</span><a href=\"https://www.ithala.co.za/who-are-we-2/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by the KZN government</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> — to buy a farm. Same guy.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mkhize</span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-11-18-confident-zweli-mkhize-talks-about-anc-policies-and-hard-line-on-corruption-if-elected-president/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recently that his priority as ANC leader would be combating corruption. Which is excellent news, because if there’s one thing South Africa is sick and tired of, it’s corrupt leaders.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if Mkhize doesn’t make the cut at the ANC conference, worry not! Paul Mashatile, who is running as deputy president but has also indicated that he wouldn’t say no to a nomination for the top spot, has practically built his whole campaign on his anti-corruption stance.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mashatile has not endorsed either Ramaphosa or Mkhize for the ANC presidency and</span><a href=\"https://www.businesslive.co.za/bd/politics/2022-11-16-ramaphosa-and-mkhize-scandals-are-not-good-for-the-anc-says-mashatile/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has warned</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that both the Phala Phala and Digital Vibes allegations constitute a corruption cloud hanging over the party which could cost the ANC dearly come 2024.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mashatile was also in the Gauteng ANC leadership which bravely staked an independent position against Jacob Zuma’s corruption, so Mashatile is no Johnny-come-lately to the clean governance ticket. He has been vocal in his disapproval of corrupt leaders for literally </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">years</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Okay, okay, if you </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insist</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on reminding us, Mashatile did have a slightly chequered period of … absolutely not more than, say, 13 years, roundabout 1997 to 2010-ish, when the</span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-12-07-the-man-who-would-be-anc-king-never-ever-bet-against-paul-mashatile/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">corruption allegations against him</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were coming thick and fast. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That did happen, yes. The allegations ranged from him having charged almost R100,000 at a fancy Sandton restaurant to the Gauteng taxpayer, to him having exploited various positions in the provincial government to benefit friends and family with chunky contracts. Yes, there’s quite a rich </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amaBhungane</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dossier on Mashatile from around the late 2000s, but that’s ancient history.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mashatile is </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against corruption now, which is all you need to know.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The anti-graft mania doesn’t stop with the ANC’s presidential contenders, either.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nomvula Mokonyane, who is</span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-11-23-anc-top-6-see-the-branch-nominations-breakdown-with-our-interactive-graphic/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">currently leading the race</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be ANC deputy secretary-general by a country mile, has also revealed a new aversion to corruption-related matters. Mokonyane has</span><a href=\"https://www.news24.com/citypress/politics/nomvula-mokonyane-bemoans-weak-anc-leadership-20221211\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expressed dissatisfaction</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the party’s handling of the Phala Phala saga, saying that Ramaphosa “must still be held accountable and he must be made to account to the relevant structures”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is all about accountability for Mokonyane; it’s practically a religion for her. Pardon? Yes, yes, this is the Nomvula Mokonyane recommended for potential prosecution by the Zondo Commission, who dismissed the inquiry’s report as “</span><a href=\"https://ewn.co.za/2022/07/07/mokonyane-to-take-state-capture-findings-against-her-on-review\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">total rubbish</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">”. Do keep up.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mokonyane has actually acknowledged that there is the </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tiniest</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shadow of corruption hanging over her personally, but her defence seems perfectly reasonable: “We’re going to this conference with issues said against many people, including the President.” </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What’s important is maintaining focus on the bigger picture here: stopping corruption! Getting bogged down in the weeds of tawdry personal histories can only hold us back, as a country, from striding into a glorious, corruption-free New … Morning. </span><b>DM</b>",
