While this publication will shut down, what we offered – fast, fun, and fearless coverage of business [and not-quite-business] topics – will continue elsewhere, uninterrupted.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Launched five years ago this month as a partnership between </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business Insider</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a German-owned American-headquartered outlet, and News24, part of the Media24 group, </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business Insider SA</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> evolved into a publication featuring news and lifestyle content alongside business content. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2015, an 88% stake in the head office was acquired by the European multinational publisher </span><a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axel_Springer_SE\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Axel Springer SE</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for $343-million. It had already owned a portion of </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business Insider</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from previous funding rounds. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The brand was renamed </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insider</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in February 2021.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the purchase, a substantial portion of staff left the company. </span><a href=\"https://money.cnn.com/2016/04/29/media/business-insider-staff-exodus/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CNN reported</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that some staff who exited complained that “traffic took precedence over </span><a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_reporting\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enterprise reporting</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">”. Morale inside </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business Insider</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">’s newsroom in Manhattan plunged, spurring an exodus of editorial staff.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2018, staff members were asked to sign a </span><a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-disclosure_agreement\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">confidentiality agreement</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that included a </span><a href=\"https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/nondisparagement\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non-disparagement</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> clause requiring them not to criticise the site during or after their employment.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insider</span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">’</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s model has relied on publishing original stories with clickbaity headlines and aggregated material from other outlets. It has also been criticised for publishing native advertising, which resembles the publication’s editorial content but is paid for by an advertiser, and even granted sponsors editorial control of its content. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Native advertising is said to help drive traffic, engagement and conversions on the internet. Usually, it features as “recommended”, “suggested by” or “sponsored” posts on websites.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Visit </b><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/?utm_source=direct&utm_medium=in_article_link&utm_campaign=homepage\"><b><i>Daily Maverick’s</i></b><b> home page</b></a><b> for more news, analysis and investigations</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because native advertising is so easily mistaken for a site’s content, it blurs the line between advertising and editorial, making it difficult for users to discern the advertising.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Users deem the ads as deceptive, underhanded and potentially unethical, while some brands claim they boost awareness.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now the parent company, Insider, has decided not to renew </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business Insider SA</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">’s licensing agreement.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">News24 editor-in-chief Adriaan Basson said he was extremely proud of what </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business Insider SA</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had achieved in five years.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“BI, as we called it, came from nowhere and quickly turned the business media market on its head. With an approach that is much more consumer focused, BI soon became the largest business website in South Africa. In its five years of existence, BI was always in the top three ranking of business websites, alongside its sister publication, </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">News24 Business</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked why the SA publication had been shut, Basson told </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insider </span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the US had simply switched its licensing strategy to focus on the mother site project, </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insider.com</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“They want all international English traffic to come to the [Insider] site. That is our understanding of their strategy change, which we accept and it makes sense for the stage where we are in terms of the media industry.”</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business Insider SA’</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s staff would be transferred to News24, barring one who chose to take a package.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next month, News24 will be launching a new section focused on technology and trends to replace the </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business Insider</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offering. </span><b>BM/DM </b>\r\n\r\n<strong><em>Update: This story has been updated.
