Arne Slot has seamlessly taken over the Liverpool coaching reins from beloved German Jürgen Klopp. It is still early days, but he appears well equipped to lead the side.

It’s never easy to take over the reins when your predecessor is someone who is a revered figure, not just within the institution he is departing, but in his general field of expertise.

That’s why when German manager Jürgen Klopp announced that he was leaving Liverpool after nine years at the helm, the question of how his successor would build on the foundation that the 57-year-old had laid during his tenure was prominent.

On his charisma and “heavy metal” passion alone, Klopp found his way into the hearts of the Liverpool fanbase. Three Champions Leagues finals (with one won), as well as delivering the Reds’ first league title in three decades cemented his legacy in Scouse folklore.

Though his last couple of seasons were not as exciting as the previous campaigns, Klopp still left the Reds in a healthy state. Certainly in a much healthier state compared with what he found in 2015, when they were merely also-rans.

In his final year, they finished third in the Premier League and qualified for the Champions League after not being part of it last season. Klopp’s men also clinched the Carabao Cup in his farewell campaign.

Success

It was on the back of this success that Dutchman Arne Slot was tasked with taking the baton from Klopp, a man whom the former respects immensely.

“He did so well. Not only in terms of results. But also, everybody saw in his farewell and in the years before that how popular he was,” Slot said of Klopp after being installed as his successor.

This film has played out a number of times in soccer. It usually has the same ending. A prime example of this is when David Moyes was tasked with filling the extra-large shoes of Manchester United’s legendary manager Alex Ferguson.

He simply could not. More than 10 years after Ferguson’s departure the Red Devils are still seeking a manager who will even be half as successful and popular as the Scotsman.

Owing to his nonchalant nature, as opposed to the sometimes-eccentric Klopp, Slot may never usurp his predecessor on the soccer popularity scale. However, the 45-year-old appears well equipped to ensure the Reds remain a competitive force in European soccer, after Klopp fought to ensure they regain their lost aura.

Liverpool’s latest head coach has made an impressive start to his reign, winning all three of his first top-flight matches without conceding a goal, while scoring seven in the process.

This includes a resounding 3-0 victory over Liverpool’s bitter rivals – United – at Old Trafford in their most recent game. Slot’s promising start in England has also been rewarded with a manager-of-the-month nomination for August.

He is joined by Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta, Pep Guardiola and Fabian Hürzeler of Brighton on the list. The nomination is a huge compliment for the former midfielder’s exciting style of play, which is mostly possession-based, with a sprinkling of the relentless pressing that made Klopp’s Liverpool.

A different approach

“It’s quite different from before. Now we are trying to control the ball all the time,” veteran attacker Mohamed Salah told Liverpool’s media department on life under Slot so far.

“I’m not saying before we were not (trying to control the ball). But before it wasn’t really the primary thing. Because with Jürgen most of the time we tried to counter-attack or counter-press, and tried to win the ball as high as possible,” Salah said.

“Now we’re still doing that for sure, but also when you have the ball, you have more time to keep the ball and just try to move it around. So, more possession with the ball.”

Slot was recruited by the Reds on the back of a couple of relatively successful coaching tenures in his homeland.

The 45-year-old – who hung up his playing boots in 2013 after more than 400 club appearances within the Netherlands – caught the eye with Dutch Eredivisie side AZ Alkmaar.

The former midfielder initially moved to Alkmaar as an assistant to John van den Brom. Slot took over as the club’s head coach ahead for the 2019/20 campaign.

He had an instant impact following the promotion as his AZ side were neck and neck with Ajax Amsterdam (tied on 56 points and second due to goal difference) when the league was scrapped owing to Covid-19.

Not long after Slot departed Alkmaar for Feyenoord. In 2021/22 – his first season with his new club – Slot guided Feyenoord to the inaugural final of the third tier Uefa Conference League, where they fell to José Mourinho’s well-organised Roma outfit.

Slot won the Eredivisie with Feyenoord in 2022/23, earning the club its first title in six years. He clinched the Dutch Cup last season and led Feyenoord to a runner-up league spot before bidding them adieu.

Early doubts

Despite his decent CV within Dutch soccer, Slot’s ability to make the leap to Liverpool was questioned by some when he was confirmed as Klopp’s replacement.

One of those who asked whether the Dutchman could make the transition and also improve the Reds, following the strides made under Klopp, was former Reds defender Jamie Carragher.

“From Feyenoord to Liverpool is a huge jump. It shows at this moment that there’s probably a dearth of real top managers out there, when you look at who Liverpool are going for,” Carragher told Sky Sports at the time.

A perfect start to the season – matched only by Manchester City – may have swayed some of the doubters who shared Carragher’s concern.

It is still early in the season though, and Slot has repeatedly said they will take it one game at a time.

City are favourites to win a fifth consecutive league title, but the Dutchman and his charges may fancy their odds in this season’s Champions League. They have a decent squad that appears to have adapted quickly to the technical team switch-up. DM
