The dance troupe has racked up almost three million views of its #Jerusalemachallenge on</span><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1P_Q2jJfaiw\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YouTube</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as it leads activists, artists and catalysts to gather (masked up and social distanced) in celebration of a month-long national and global</span><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8X01ADXKdw\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#womandlachallenge</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to honour South Africa’s heroic women, past and present.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The</span><a href=\"http://www.womandlachallenge.com/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#womandladancechallenge</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which aims to become a global viral fundraising phenomenon, is one of the many fundraising initiatives that have emerged since lockdown, and aims to be fun, accessible and inclusive. It is a project of the</span><a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/innercitycollective/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inner City Community Action Network (CAN) Collective</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The community action networks (CANs) are part of the many civil society and non-profit community-based organisations that have emerged across the country as loose alliances, with many established non-profits since the arrival of Covid-19, focusing on community assistance and disaster relief (feeding, education, personal protective equipment and clothing).</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The #womandlachallenge is a hybrid of two global movements: the #jerusalemachallenge that has made global stars of</span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/MasterKGsa\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@masterKG</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and</span><a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/nomcebo_zikode/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@Nomcebozikode.</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> – who have also been nominated by Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa as “South African global cultural ambassadors” – and a new street art movement, emerging with the Black Lives Matter protests in the US.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the #womandlajerusalemachallenge, organisations – civil society, community, commercial, public sector, faith-based and family – are encouraged to mask up, practise social distance and put their best dancing feet forward. They are then encouraged to upload a video of their performance to social media, donate a nominal amount per person or team, and challenge their peers to do the same.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second element in the challenge will remain indelibly etched on the streets of Maboneng – as a street art piece. The word WOMANDLA</span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was painted on the tarmac of Fox Street by local artists and community volunteers over the course of three days leading up to Women’s Day. The</span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sign is visible from above and has already been integrated into local music videos. The mural was inspired by the Black Lives Matter</span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">street sign in downtown Seattle in the US, and we hope that it will become as celebrated as the latter. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The #womandlachallenge launched on 9 August 2020 in Maboneng, live-streaming on Facebook with a truly sizzling dance performance by the </span><a href=\"https://web.facebook.com/pages/category/Nonprofit-Organization/Enzo-Dance-Academy-EDA-1217135148451965/?_rdc=1&_rdr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enzo Dance Academy</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, plus a moving poetry tribute to women by South African Africa slam poet champion</span><a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/theneozulu/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thuthukani Myeza, </span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and a heartfelt gusty solo by Jo Stuart, who can be heard at Maboneng every Sunday.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-698618\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/MC-Womandla-Berman-WOMANDLACHALLENGE-MAILER-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"672\" height=\"2560\" />The event was a culmination of a</span><a href=\"https://web.facebook.com/cityofcourage/?_rdc=1&_rdr\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@cityofcourage</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> run through the city by gender activist</span><a href=\"http://www.wmaca.org/kidz-clinics/alexandra-kidz-clinic/luke-lamprecht/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luke Lamprecht</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> accompanied by his teams from</span><a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/FightwithInsight/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@fightwithinsight</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and @nirvana, two of the beneficiaries of this fundraiser that work with youth in the inner city. Other beneficiaries include</span><a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/WMACAKidz/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women and Men Against Child Abuse</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and</span><a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/afrikaawake2/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Afrika Awake.</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The run took them past prominent public artworks celebrating South African women.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the campaign rolls out on</span><a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/womandlachallenge/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instagram,</span></a><a href=\"https://bit.ly/33TwGE5\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YouTube</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other social media, the Katlehong Kids have agreed to return to Maboneng every Sunday in August at 11am and will be training public and community how to bop and move to #Jerusalema. The Katlehong Kids troupe works in the community of Katlehong, training kids in dance, gymnastics and movement, and is the initiative of</span><a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/enzothatohatsi/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enzo Thathohatsi Musi</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Enzo Dance Academy. Their weekly performances on the vibrant mural include local skateboarders and community – and whoever arrives on the Sunday – and have even included </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maverick Citizen’s</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Mark Heywood in running gear.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the organisers, however, the most exciting element of the project is the emergence of a team of art-ivists – established artists and passing members of the community – who gathered around the project, volunteering their skills for painting for the launch event, and beyond.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The artwork was a truly inclusive process. Materials and the space were allocated by the new precinct management team. The outlines of the WOMANDLA</span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">logo were completed over two days by tattoo artist Mojalefa Mjakes Molefe and his assistant on the tarred road beneath a recently unveiled mural by</span><a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/dbongz_one/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bongani Mahlati</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> depicting a pantheon of African women musicians, commissioned by BazArt for Apple iTunes.</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Street artists who volunteered their time and talent, adopting one of the eight letters in Womandla, include:</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">W- </span><a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/devolutinery/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dumisani Jere</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who provided overall art direction and painted and designed the letter W replete with Hello Kitties and more.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O- Self-trained visual artist</span><a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/y.o.d.a.a___/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yolanda Mazwana, </span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whose work focuses on feminine forms, was responsible for the voluptuous O letter. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">M- Space Production director QueenKatZA managed the geometric M letter with the help of two young skateboarders, Andile and Bonginkosi, wielding paint rollers; </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A - Amaha, who stopped past and adopted the letter A, making it a homage to women in Ethiopian Amharic letters reading </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Woman, Mother, Earth</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">N - Bilal LBC rolled with the N, assisted by Andile, and Maboneng’s precinct security manager Sthembiso. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D - Zee, recently relocated from Cape Town, was walking past, and took ownership of the letter D.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LA - The L and the A were overseen by Bilal, with Sthembiso, Andile and Tristan, who met Dumisani in design school, completing the enclosed heart in vibrant orange and electric green.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And as the artwork grew and took on deeper meaning, local street entrepreneur and photographer Sbu of</span><a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/soflyfashions/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SoFly</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> joined the project early on the Friday as videographer. His branded swag – created on Saturday night – was worn by the dancers on the Sunday. The young skateboarders Andile and Bonginkosi were a constant source of inspiration and help, with ‘Nkosi developing a new skill set as he took to operating a skateboard and handheld camera simultaneously. The final coup de grace was courtesy of a passing drone owner, Ngoyi, who volunteered his drone footage of the emerging mural to the project, providing a perspective of Maboneng and the WOMANDLA</span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">artwork that many won’t get to see.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The #womandlachallenge will continue throughout August – on Sundays for 40 participants and 24/7 in cyberspace – as more and more organisations are urged take up the challenge and donate to the cause.
