Avatar soars to Golden Globe triumphs

Hailed by global audiences (and quite a few critics, including The Daily Maverick’s Kevin Bloom) as a milestone in film-making, “Avatar”, the story about the alien world of Pandora and its fight against the human scourge, is well on its way to becoming financially the most successful movie ever. Last night in Beverly Hills, California, it picked up some top awards too. The Foreign Press Association bestowed the Golden Globe for Best Drama on “Avatar” and Best Director on James Cameron. His acceptance speech didn’t include any references of him ruling the world; perhaps he was saving himself for the Oscars ceremony.

Other notable winners were Meryl Streep, Sandra Bullock, Robert Downey Jr. and Jeff Bridges.
