In torrential rain in Athlone, the Junior Boks went down 17-12 to lose their second successive match in the World Rugby U20 Championship.

The Junior Springboks lost 17-12 to England U20 in a wet and windy Athlone Stadium in their final group stage match at the World Rugby U20 Championship.

The result means that the Junior Boks finish eighth overall across the 12 teams in the tournament. They will contest a fifth-place semifinal on Sunday.

Entrance into the semifinals was a tough task headed into the match against England and conditions made it even trickier.

South Africa needed a four try bonus point, to deny England a bonus point and beat them by more than 25 points.

It was always going to be an uphill battle for the side that lost 31-12 to Argentina last Thursday.

South Africa barely threatened the English tryline outside the first 10 minutes of the match when they scored the opening try.

The side played with more intensity and won more of the physical battle compared with the match against Argentina, but their set piece capitulated again.

South Africa’s scrum buckled under the English pressure while hooker Luca Bakkes struggled to find his jumpers in the lineout.

When Bakkes did find his locks, the Baby Boks maul worked well.

Nevertheless, the match struggled for any real fluidity and was filled with errors from both teams as the conditions didn’t allow for continuity.

The scores were deadlocked at 12-12 for an extended period of the second half before a rolling maul by England, six minutes after the final hooter had gone, secured a victory for the Six Nations U20 champions.

It was a deserved victory for England with South Africa relying on their last-ditch defence several times to keep them in the match.

Strong start

Both captains opened the scoring for their sides as they went into the break deadlocked on 7-7.

Aided by a strong wind blowing behind them, the baby Boks had the ascendency early before captain Zachary Porthen rumbled under the posts to help give South Africa a 7-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes.

The Junior Boks’ malfunctioning set piece led to England’s first points in the match. Baby Boks hooker Bakkes overthrew a lineout 10 metres out before it was scooped up and dotted down by flanker and captain Finn Carnduff.

South Africa would have considered themselves lucky to go into halftime with the scores tied despite playing with the breeze.

England squandered opportunities in the South African half, failing to capitalise on their entries to the 22m and on one occasion kicked a long-arm penalty dead.

The match never really got into fifth gear as both teams struggled to hold on to the ball.

Late score

The second half started like the first ended, with England in control, camping on the Baby Boks’ 10-metre line. It took less time for England to cross the line this time though.

A lineout and subsequent maul saw England lock Joe Bailey score the first points of the half.

The try seemed to spur on the Boks who upped the intensity immediately. A period of enterprising play, followed by a grubber through by outside centre Jurenzo Julius, allowed the space for winger Likhona Finca to create magic.

The winger arrived first at the rolling ball about 40 metres from the English tryline before tapping it ahead twice, out-running two opposition players in the process before diving on the ball over the tryline.

South Africa seemed to run out of steam after the score by Finca, however.

England forged forward with their destructive pack late in the clash with the scores still tied after the 80th minute.

England, with a 12-player maul, fell over the tryline with the clock six minutes into the red.

Replacement hooker James Isaacs came up with the ball. The tough conversion was missed by flyhalf Benjamin Coen as England secured a five-point win and a ticket to the semifinals of the competition.

Other results

Earlier in the day, the match between Australia and Ireland was cancelled at Athlone Stadium due to the torrential weather. Nevertheless, the other two matches continued as France beat Wales 29-11 to secure their spot in the semifinals.

At Danie Craven Stadium, New Zealand thumped Spain 45-13 while Argentina came away with a 52-12 win over Fiji.

Georgia shocked Italy 28-17. DM
