"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2021, the director of the African Research Universities Alliance Centre of Excellence in Food Security at the University of Pretoria was </span><a href=\"https://www.nestle.com/media/pressreleases/allpressreleases/board-of-directors-agm-2021\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appointed</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the board of the transnational food corporation Nestlé.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the time, a group of more than </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-11-23-on-board-with-nestle-academics-express-concern-over-conflicts-of-interest/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">200 senior academics</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wrote an open letter about conflicts of interest. Nestlé’s portfolio of foods, by its </span><a href=\"https://www.businesstoday.in/latest/corporate/story/60-of-nestles-food-portfolio-unhealthy-says-report-company-on-firefighting-mode-298388-2021-06-01\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">own admission</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, includes more than 60% that don’t meet the definition of healthy products.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In December 2023, the same centre announced it had signed a memorandum of understanding with Nestlé. It signalled its intent to “forge a transformative partnership” to shape “the future of food and nutrition research and education” and transform “</span><a href=\"https://www.futureafrica.science/news-events/all-news/item/UP%20and%20%20Nestl%C3%A9%20forge%20a%20transformative%20partnership\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Africa’s food systems</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not an isolated case. Across African universities, companies with products that are harmful to health fund health-related research and education. Nestlé, for example, “</span><a href=\"https://www.nestle.com/about/research-development/news/expertise-sharing-african-students\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shares expertise</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">” with “eight universities in Africa”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These include the Institute of Applied Science and Technology at the </span><a href=\"https://www.ug.edu.gh/news/ug-and-nestl%C3%A9-collaborate-advance-sustainable-and-affordable-%20nutrition\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University of Ghana</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the </span><a href=\"https://www.csrs.ch/en/blog/centre-suisse-de-recherches-scientifiques-and-nestle-take-stock-their-collaboration\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centre Suisse de Recherches Scientifiques</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Ivory Coast.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Activities funded under agreements with universities include internships, seminars, training programmes and sponsorships for graduate research students.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In South Africa, Nestlé has funded a prize in paediatrics for final-year medical students at the </span><a href=\"https://www.wits.ac.za/media/wits-university/students/graduations/2022-graduations/14%20Dec%2014-30%20December_38.pdf#page=23\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University of the Witwatersrand</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It also funds a two-year paediatric gastroenterology fellowship at </span><a href=\"https://www.nestlenutrition-institute.org/education/fellowship/stellenbosch-university\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stellenbosch University</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Bias – even if it’s unconscious</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financial links between corporations and academic institutions are well known to lead to conflicts of interest.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A </span><a href=\"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28207928/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017 paper</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, “Industry sponsorship and Research Outcome”, found that “industry funding leads researchers to favour corporations either consciously or unconsciously”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those advising governments and charities on dietary policy warn how “current or past financial or personal associations with interested parties make it difficult to </span><a href=\"https://bmcpublichealth.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12889-016-3393-2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">distinguish subtle, unconscious bias from deliberately concealed impropriety</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other research found that of 168 industry-funded studies, </span><a href=\"https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2016/dec/12/studies-health-nutrition-sugar-coca-cola-marion-nestle\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">156 (93%) showed biased results</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, all in favour of industry sponsors. In 2018, about 13% of research articles published in the top 10 most-cited nutrition journals were </span><a href=\"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33326431/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">backed by and favourable to the food industry</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Such backing is often hidden.</span>\r\n<h4><b>A growing problem</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The world is facing a pandemic of noncommunicable diseases – hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer – all linked to the consequences of poor nutrition such as </span><a href=\"https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/obesity-and-overweight\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stunting and obesity</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2023 </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lancet</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> commission reports that “</span><a href=\"https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(23)00590-1/fulltext\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just four industry sectors already account for at least a third of global deaths</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">”, one of which is unhealthy food.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These four industry sectors are expanding their markets in Africa and elsewhere in the Global South, where the inadequate regulation of the sales and marketing of </span><a href=\"https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/09581596.2021.2019681\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unhealthy foods, drinks, alcohol, tobacco</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and agrichemical products provides opportunities for corporations to exploit.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most well-known commercial products that harm health are tobacco-related, now widely regulated to decrease harm.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tobacco industry </span><a href=\"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/7609230/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">used many tactics to prevent its regulation</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It funded research and whole institutions to produce “evidence” to support the industry or sow doubt about the harmful impacts of tobacco.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2019, public health academics at the University of Cape Town (UCT) discovered that the psychiatry department had accepted funding from the </span><a href=\"https://www.pmi.com/our-transformation/delivering-a-smoke-free-future\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Philip Morris Foundation for a Smoke-Free World</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The department subsequently cancelled the contract after </span><a href=\"https://mg.co.za/article/2019-10-18-00-big-tobaccos-r1m-for-uct-stubbed-out/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">outrage</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the broader university community. In 2020, the UCT council adopted a policy </span><a href=\"https://commerce.uct.ac.za/reep/articles/2020-01-30-uct-council-adopts-policy-tobacco-funding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disallowing</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> any employee from accepting funding from the tobacco industry.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In another example, scientific research published in </span><a href=\"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/5339699/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1967</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> implicated saturated fat as the main cause of heart disease. In so doing it </span><a href=\"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27802504/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">downplayed the role of sugar</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It took more than 40 years to uncover that this research was paid for by the sugar industry.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The decline in </span><a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1038/nature.2017.22816\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research funding</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in South Africa means that academics need to be especially vigilant. We need to protect our higher education institutions from research bias.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not enough to simply declare these interests and assume that this will eliminate the conflict of interest. Instead, public health academics need to develop much more robust systems to manage conflicts of interest at all levels of academia.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Governance structures at universities need mechanisms to respond to initiatives that run counter to public health. The Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at UCT has called for an </span><a href=\"https://health.uct.ac.za/department-paediatrics/child-advocacy-campaigns/protect-support-and-promote-breastfeeding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">end to sponsorship</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by infant formula milk companies for education, research or policy development.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An online course and toolkit for research ethics committees on conflict of interest in health research provides some </span><a href=\"https://health.uct.ac.za/school-public-health/conflict-interest-health-research\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">practical guidance</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
