Picture Velani Ludidi</em></p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Madikizela </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-04-28-embattled-bonginkosi-madikizela-resigns-from-top-jobs-in-western-cape/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">resigned</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as Western Cape DA provincial leader and as MEC for Transport and Public Works in 2021 after a </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-04-13-da-western-cape-chief-bonginkosi-madikizela-does-not-have-a-bcom-degree-as-publicly-claimed/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> investigation</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found he had lied about having a BCom degree. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Madikizela was first elected as DA provincial leader in 2018 and was re-elected in </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-11-22-bonginkosi-madikizela-talks-unity-as-he-holds-on-to-leadership-of-democratic-alliance-in-the-western-cape-for-a-second-term/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">November 2020</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked by </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the qualification scandal, he said he has moved on from that. “To me, that is in the past,” said Madikizela. “My reaction is a demonstration of a leader that believes in accountability and accountability comes with consequences. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Consequence management is something that is missing in our politics and that is why you have a number of people who are still serving in key positions despite the fact that they were implicated in the Zondo Commission (of Inquiry into State Capture report).”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Madikizela believes he still has more value to add in saving South Africa to</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> really deal with the issues of poverty, unemployment, inequality, landlessness and racial inequality. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike other parties where a contestant has to meet a certain number of nominations, a contestant in the DA needs to be a member in good standing and be nominated by one person and another to second the nomination. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Madikizela returned to the spotlight again following his resignation when Premier Alan Winde attempted to appoint him </span><a href=\"https://www.news24.com/news24/southafrica/news/dream-job-ex-da-leader-bonginkosi-madikizela-to-earn-a-cool-r2m-as-a-special-advisor-20220219\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as his advisor</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The job would have seen Madikizela getting close to R2-million per annum and this caused an uproar as opposition parties argued that he did not possess the necessary qualifications for a Level IV compensation. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Madikizela said that the noise and pressure that followed the premier’s announcement was \"too much\" and led him to turn down the job. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other candidates who are tipped to raise their hands for the position of provincial leader, include current leader Tertuis Simmers who replaced former DA member Albert Fritz.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fritz </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-01-24-albert-fritz-steps-down-as-western-cape-da-leader-amid-misconduct-investigation/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stepped down</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as Western Cape DA leader amid a misconduct investigation. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another hopeful contender is embattled City of Cape Town councillor </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-05-das-suspended-malusi-booi-is-back-in-cape-town-council-but-whom-is-he-representing/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malusi Booi</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, although it is not yet clear if he will be eligible to stand for any position as he remains suspended by the party pending the finalisation of the investigation into his alleged conduct.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to his suspension from party activities, Booi </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-05-das-suspended-malusi-booi-is-back-in-cape-town-council-but-whom-is-he-representing/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could not attend</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the party’s congress in April where John Steenhuisen fended off Dr Mpho Phalatse to remain party leader. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MEC for Health and Wellness Dr Nomafrench Mbombo is tipped to go up against Deputy Federal Chairperson JP Smith for the provincial deputy leader position. </span>\r\n\r\nAsked to respond on Madikizela's plan, DA national spokesperson Solly Malatsi said the party was yet to appoint a presiding officer for the election process, and thus no comment was forthcoming.\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jaco Londt, the current provincial chairperson, is expected to avail himself again for the position. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a week’s time, the DA in Gauteng will convene its provincial congress where Solly Msimanga and Nkhumeleni Ramulifho will be vying to become provincial leader. </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gauteng is the DA’s largest province with more than </span><a href=\"https://www.news24.com/citypress/politics/its-all-systems-go-for-da-gauteng-provincial-conference-20230801\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1,100 delegates</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span><b>DM</b>",
