"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you’ve been in a bookshop recently you may have seen references to BookTok – whether it’s stickers on books or whole tables dedicated to “BookTok favourites”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BookTok is a community on the social media app TikTok. Creators make short videos recommending, reviewing or just generally chatting about books. This community has become one of the biggest on the platform and its hashtag (</span><a href=\"https://www.tiktok.com/tag/BookTok\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#BookTok</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) has been used for more than </span><a href=\"https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/stephaniemcneal/colleen-hoover-booktok-bestsellers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60 billion videos</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BookTok’s influence over the publishing industry and what young people are reading is staggering.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Online reading communities have been around for a while. </span><a href=\"https://www.goodreads.com/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goodreads</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> – a social cataloguing platform where readers can follow friends and authors, get book recommendations and read user-submitted reviews – was launched in 2007, and there are other communities on sites such as YouTube (BookTube) and Instagram (</span><a href=\"https://readerhaven.com/how-to-start-a-bookstagram/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bookstagram</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, none of these sites seems to have captured the attention of readers, publishers and retailers quite like BookTok. Caroline Hardman, a literary agent at Hardman & Swainson, corroborates this, </span><a href=\"https://www.theguardian.com/books/2023/aug/06/i-cant-stress-how-much-booktok-sells-teen-literary-influencers-swaying-publishers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">telling </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Guardian</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: “It’s having a strong effect on what publishers look for.”</span>\r\n<h4><b>Is the impact positive or negative?</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main demographic of BookTok creators, viewers and authors is </span><a href=\"https://www.irishtimes.com/culture/books/2023/01/02/never-underestimate-the-power-of-booktok/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">young women</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Though books popular with young women have gained immense broad popularity before – for example, the </span><a href=\"https://stepheniemeyer.com/the-twilight-saga/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twilight</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> saga</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (from 2005) by Stephenie Meyer, and the paranormal romance fever that followed – young women have rarely been taken seriously as either critics or readers. </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But times are changing. The books most popular with BookTok – such as romance, fantasy and the hybrid genre “romantasy” – are being </span><a href=\"https://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/international/Frankfurt-Book-Fair/article/90668-frankfurt-book-fair-2022-romantasy-and-revelry-on-the-fair-floor.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">picked up by publishers</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and </span><a href=\"https://www.thebookseller.com/login?Refdoc=https%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Ethebookseller%2Ecom%2Ffeatures%2Fpublishers%2Dand%2Dmarketeers%2Dlaud%2Dimpact%2Dof%2Dbooktok%2Din%2Dthe%2Dresurgence%2Dof%2Dromance#:%7E:text=Maddy%20Marshall%2C%20senior%20marketing%20manager,there%20are%20whole%20table%20displays\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">displayed more prominently in bookshops</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Book series such as </span><a href=\"https://sarahjmaas.com/books/a-court-of-thorns-and-roses-series/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Court of Thorns and Roses</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Sarah J Maas (from 2015) are immensely popular on BookTok – with some videos about the series amassing </span><a href=\"https://www.tiktok.com/@itsthesuriel/video/7216831361120865578?q=A%20Court%20of%20Thorns%20and%20Roses&t=1694440196044\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than a million views</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick: </b><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-09-19-how-tiktoks-dating-story-time-trend-offers-a-glimpse-into-the-sometimes-weird-world-of-modern-romance/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How TikTok’s dating story time trend offers a glimpse into the sometimes weird world of modern romance</span></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The series is marketed alongside new releases like </span><a href=\"https://harpercollins.co.uk/products/the-hurricane-wars-the-hurricane-wars-book-1-thea-guanzon\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hurricane Wars</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Thea Guanzon or </span><a href=\"https://www.goodreads.com/series/261299-hades-x-persephone-saga\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Touch of Chaos</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Scarlett St Clair, with Maas’s series appearing as “similar” or “recommended” on Amazon, Waterstones and Goodreads, as well as often being mentioned in readers’ reviews.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mythology retellings are also immensely popular on BookTok, sparked by titles such as </span><a href=\"https://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/song-of-achilles-9781526648174/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Song of Achilles</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Madeline Miller (2011). Such titles now feature heavily on publishers’ lists of new releases and coming-soon books. </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though it is fascinating to see that young women and their tastes can have such a big impact on the publishing industry, there’s a risk it may homogenise it. Literary critic </span><a href=\"https://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/culture/article/booktok-tiktok-books-community\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barry Pierce</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has said that BookTok reads “all sort of have the same cover”. Meanwhile, author </span><a href=\"https://www.bustle.com/entertainment/sweetbitter-author-stephanie-danler-booktok-instagram\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stephanie Danler</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said of her foray into BookTok: “It seemed impossible to discover different fiction. It was the same 20 books over and over.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BookTok also has a problem with diversity – in more ways than one. Its recommendations are </span><a href=\"https://www.thecut.com/2022/11/booktok-racial-bias-tiktok-algorithm.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overwhelmingly by white authors,</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and it is unclear what the long-term effects of this will be on both the publishing industry and the young readers who flock to the app for recommendations. </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, by catering to this huge audience of young women, publishers are forgoing books by men, </span><a href=\"https://www.dazeddigital.com/life-culture/article/54863/1/where-have-all-the-young-male-novelists-gone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">especially emerging writers</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Identifying as ‘readers’</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BookTok is also proving a powerful tool for renewing interest in past titles. At the inaugural </span><a href=\"https://mashable.com/article/tiktok-book-awards-booktok-bolu-babalola#:%7E:text=The%20inaugural%20TikTok%20Book%20Awards,fans%20voting%20via%20the%20app.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BookTok Awards</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in August, Dolly Alderton’s memoir, </span><a href=\"https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/306824/everything-i-know-about-love-by-alderton-dolly/9780241982105\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everything I Know About Love</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, won in the “best book to end a reading slump” category, despite being published in 2018.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These awards even had a “best BookTok revival” category, with the award going to Jane Austen’s </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pride and Prejudice</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1813). It’s funny to think that Austen, an author so revered that she is printed on the </span><a href=\"https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/banknotes/polymer-10-pound-note#:%7E:text=We%20first%20issued%20our%20current,features%20the%20author%20Jane%20Austen.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">£10 note</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is being “revived”, but the younger demographic of BookTok may mean that new audiences are coming to even such established authors. </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also makes startlingly clear how much BookTok and its creators are tastemakers who are shaping what and how young people read. As some creators themselves </span><a href=\"https://www.theguardian.com/books/2021/jun/25/the-rise-of-booktok-meet-the-teen-influencers-pushing-books-up-the-charts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have said</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, BookTok favours “convincing you to read books based on their aesthetics”.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick: </b><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-03-22-tiktok-bans-what-the-evidence-says-about-security-and-privacy-concerns/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TikTok bans: what the evidence says about security and privacy concerns</span></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This might appear to be a shallow way to read, but it is clearly very compelling, especially for a generation for whom countercultures have given way to microtrends and niche aesthetic identities.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Young people are no longer punks, hippies or goths, but instead dress with a “</span><a href=\"https://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/what-exactly-is-cottagecore\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cottagecore</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">” or “</span><a href=\"https://theconversation.com/how-reading-dark-academia-novels-can-help-new-students-feel-more-at-home-at-university-213276\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dark academia</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">” aesthetic. </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identity and aesthetics are potent tools that BookTok uses to drive views, enthusiasm and sales – even if the latter isn’t the creators’ explicit aim.
