"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Britain faces strike action from exhausted healthcare workers angry at a “pitiful” 1% pay rise despite winning praise for treating thousands of coronavirus patients.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their frustration comes as a new </span><a href=\"https://www.forces.net/news/us-accounts-40-worlds-defence-spending\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows the UK government has increased spending on the military to $61.5-billion last year, up from $54.8-billion in 2019.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The International Institute for Strategic Studies (</span><a href=\"https://www.iiss.org/blogs/analysis/2021/02/military-balance-2021-introduction\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IISS</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) said this means Britain now has the </span><a href=\"https://www.iiss.org/-/media/files/publications/military-balance-2021/mb2021-further-assessments.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fourth-largest</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> defence budget in the world, ahead of Russia, France and Germany.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Russia is </span><a href=\"https://www.nationmaster.com/country-info/compare/Russia/United-Kingdom/Geography\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">70 times</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the size of the UK and has more than twice as many </span><a href=\"https://www.statista.com/statistics/685846/population-of-selected-european-countries/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inhabitants</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IISS said the Russian defence budget for 2020 was $60.6-billion, down $1-billion from 2019. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only the US, China and India spent more on their militaries than the UK, with the Pentagon accounting for 40% of the world’s defence expenditure.</span>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-859849\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/Declassified-UK-NHS-inset-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"1236\" />\r\n\r\n<b>Clap for heroes</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pandemics are among the top threats to UK national security, with 140,000 Britons </span><a href=\"https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/deaths\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dying</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with Covid-19 so far. That’s three-and-a-half times as many people as were killed by German bombs in the </span><a href=\"https://www.parliament.uk/business/publications/research/olympic-britain/crime-and-defence/the-fallen/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blitz</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of World War 2.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since coronavirus cases emerged last year, Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson has repeatedly clapped for the National Health Service (NHS) workers and thanked nurses for saving his life from the virus.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthcare staff were promised a </span><a href=\"https://news.sky.com/story/nhs-pay-rise-row-government-accused-of-snatching-away-nhs-pay-rise-of-2-1-as-union-backlash-grows-12237291\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.1% pay rise</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, until the chancellor announced last week it would be as little as 1% – or 50 pence a day extra. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When inflation is taken into account, it represents a </span><a href=\"https://www.openaccessgovernment.org/nhs-workers-a-pay-cut/105416/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pay cut</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. NHS salaries can be as low as </span><a href=\"https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-56301981\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">£18,000 a year</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Royal College of Nursing </span><a href=\"https://www.rcn.org.uk/news-and-events/news/uk-budget-misses-opportunity-to-value-vital-nursing-staff-says-rcn-030321\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Treasury missed an “opportunity to value vital nursing staff” and called for nurses to get a </span><a href=\"https://www.rcn.org.uk/news-and-events/news/uk-governments-evidence-on-nhs-pay-is-bitterly-disappointing-but-not-a-done-deal-says-rcn-040321\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12.5% pay rise</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Money for weapons</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently around £56.1-billion of the NHS annual budget goes on </span><a href=\"https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/government-spending-nhs-staff-pay-rise_uk_604254e2c5b660a0f3882601\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">staffing costs</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. behind-schedule aircraft that has been </span><a href=\"https://gizmodo.com/report-suckplane-still-sucks-cant-even-shoot-straight-1841357961\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plagued</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by technical </span><a href=\"https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidaxe/2021/02/23/the-us-air-force-just-admitted-the-f-35-stealth-fighter-has-failed/?sh=23201a41b169\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">problems</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as difficulties flying in </span><a href=\"https://www.defensenews.com/air/2020/06/24/the-f-35-lightning-ii-cant-fly-in-lightning-once-again/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thunderstorms</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A week after the missile spending was announced, the MOD said another </span><a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/news/76m-contract-boosts-f-35-lightning-fleet-support\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">£76-million</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would be spent maintaining the F-35s.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other spending announcements during lockdown this year include </span><a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/news/180m-army-vehicle-contract-protects-700-glasgow-jobs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">£180-million</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on armoured vehicles for the British army, </span><a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/news/102-million-investment-in-detect-and-destroy-system-for-british-army\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">£102-million</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on a surveillance system for soldiers and </span><a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/news/belfast-firm-secures-98-million-air-defence-missile-contract\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">£98-million</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for shoulder-launched missiles.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last March, </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Declassified</span></i> <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-03-25-the-uk-will-spend-over-350bn-on-extravagant-military-projects-while-failing-to-ensure-national-health-security/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the British government was likely to spend more than £200-billion over the next decade to fulfil its pledges on military procurement for equipment such as new nuclear-armed submarines, aircraft carriers and combat aircraft.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, other costs for the Trident nuclear weapons system could reach up to £164-billion in the 40 years to 2061.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Murad Qureshi, chair of Stop the War Coalition, told </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Declassified</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the increases in military spending were “ludicrous” and would ensure “Britain’s position as Europe’s biggest military spender at a time when it has one of the highest coronavirus death tolls on the continent”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He added: “I don’t hear a public clamour for Space Command or a National Cyber Force but l do hear a very strong appreciation of our carers and frontline workers.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UK Treasury declined to comment. vehicles for the British army, </span><a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/news/102-million-investment-in-detect-and-destroy-system-for-british-army\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">£102-million</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on a surveillance system for soldiers and </span><a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/news/belfast-firm-secures-98-million-air-defence-missile-contract\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">£98-million</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for shoulder-launched missiles.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last March, </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Declassified</span></i> <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-03-25-the-uk-will-spend-over-350bn-on-extravagant-military-projects-while-failing-to-ensure-national-health-security/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the British government was likely to spend more than £200-billion over the next decade to fulfil its pledges on military procurement for equipment such as new nuclear-armed submarines, aircraft carriers and combat aircraft.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, other costs for the Trident nuclear weapons system could reach up to £164-billion in the 40 years to 2061.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Murad Qureshi, chair of Stop the War Coalition, told </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Declassified</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the increases in military spending were “ludicrous” and would ensure “Britain’s position as Europe’s biggest military spender at a time when it has one of the highest coronavirus death tolls on the continent”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He added: “I don’t hear a public clamour for Space Command or a National Cyber Force but l do hear a very strong appreciation of our carers and frontline workers.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UK Treasury declined to comment.
