The peaceful march was organised by the Ukrainian Association of South Africa (Uaza) and followed a </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-02-28-russians-and-ukrainians-living-in-sa-denounce-putins-invasion-of-ukraine-during-joburg-protest/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">series of protests</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across the country against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I would hope that — seeing as though South Africa fought at length for its freedom — it would know what war is and what human rights are, so it would support us,” said Nataliia Galak, Uaza’s social media management assistant, who was at Sunday’s march. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uaza called on the South African government to “immediately and unequivocally” condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, saying it was ashamed that South Africa had </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-03-03-un-majority-condemns-russias-aggression-on-ukraine-south-africa-abstains/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abstained</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from a United Nations General Assembly resolution on 2 March. </span>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">HAPPENING NOW: A group of protestors have taken to the Durban Beach front to demonstrate against Russia's activities in <a href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/Ukraine?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Ukraine</a>... <a href=\"https://twitter.com/Newzroom405?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Newzroom405</a> <a href=\"https://t.co/kCKHg57IVX\">pic.twitter.com/kCKHg57IVX</a></p>\r\n— Nkosikhona Duma (@NkoRaphael) <a href=\"https://twitter.com/NkoRaphael/status/1500465895675727872?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 6, 2022</a></blockquote>\r\n<script async src=\"https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"></script>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick </span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has received an outpouring of responses from readers who have called for decisive action from the government on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, following South Africa’s </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-03-05-ukraine-ambassador-urges-sa-to-use-diplomatic-leverage-with-russia-to-push-for-humanitarian-corridors/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decision to abstain</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from voting on the United Nations General Assembly resolution condemning Russia’s assault on Ukraine. South Africa was one of only 35 nations that abstained. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nicola Spurr, a South African citizen living in the UK, told </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick </span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that she had on Thursday, 3 March, written to the South African High Commissioner in London to express her deep concern that President Cyril Ramaphosa “has held back from condemning outright the invasion of Ukraine. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“It is very clear from the footage emerging daily, brought by a wide range of journalists and analysts based in the country and abroad, that this unwarranted attack by Russia is characterised by the use of cluster bombs, thermobaric bombs and artillery fire that is aimed at civilian, not just military, targets. The human and environmental cost of this war will be incalculable,” said Spurr. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“We are at a critical moment in this war where we still have an opportunity to de-escalate and persuade [Russian] President [Vladimir] Putin to stop. (Photo: Vita Valkina)</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In her letter, Spurr urged the high commissioner to “play [her] part and use [her] influence” to urgently channel efforts into persuading Putin to withdraw from Ukraine. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spurr also urged the high commissioner, with South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation, to step up efforts to bring South Africans home. In addition to many South African students, “there are many others needing immediate financial support, accommodation and safe passage across Europe,” said Spurr. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Julie Gardiner, another South African to speak up on the conflict, told </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick </span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she felt ashamed to be South African and was disillusioned with South Africa and its stance on the invasion of Ukraine. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I am living in a country where the leaders have gone silent; lost their backbone and voice,” said Gardiner. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“[President Ramaphosa], you are taking the same stance as you always do — putting your head in the sand and hoping the problem will go away,” added Gardiner. “Watch the news — innocent people are being killed and displaced. A tragedy is happening on our watch, and we are doing nothing.”</span><b> </b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Political parties have been </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-03-03-da-lights-up-city-hall-in-solidarity-with-ukraine-while-anc-government-abstains-from-un-vote-opposing-russian-invasion/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">divided</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Russia’s decision to invade Ukraine. The DA has come out strongly in support of Ukraine while the ANC remains largely internally divided over the issue. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Sunday, the DA </span><a href=\"https://www.da.org.za/2022/03/da-launches-petition-regarding-sas-complicit-stance-on-russia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">launched a petition</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the South African government to take a “decisive stand” on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the face of such an overwhelming atrocity, South Africa cannot stand idly by while its comrade ravishes a neighbouring country. (Photo: Vita Valkina)</p>\r\n\r\nThe DA called on the South African government to:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Ensure that Russia is held accountable to the Geneva Convention and international law;</li>\r\n \t<li>Ensure that Russia does not use any weapons that violate the Lieber Code; and</li>\r\n \t<li>Not assist in facilitating or hosting any monies, transactions or business deals that could counter the sanctions that have been introduced by the international community as measures to bring about an immediate withdrawal.</li>\r\n</ul>\r\nThe ANC has condemned MultiChoice and called on it to reconsider its “decision of censorship”, following the service provider’s <a href=\"https://www.news24.com/channel/tv/news/rt-goes-dark-in-sa-after-global-distributor-cuts-feed-20220302\">announcement</a> on Thursday, 3 March, that the Russian state-backed channel Russia Today (RT) would no longer be available on DStv until further notice.\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“The African National Congress (ANC) notes the draconian decision by the European Union (EU) to impose sanctions on Russia and its entities, including global media organisations following the escalation of hostilities between Ukraine and Russia. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Subsequently, this has resulted in the South African MultiChoice platform unilaterally withdrawing Russian TV from its offerings, impacting negatively on the freedom of choice to subscribers and limiting their consumption of news on the developments in the Ukraine-Russia conflict,” ANC national spokesperson Pule Mabe said on Saturday. </span>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https://twitter.com/MYANC?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@MYANC</a> statement on Multichoice removing Russia TV from its platform. <a href=\"https://t.co/PFtSs7Yu7A\">pic.twitter.com/PFtSs7Yu7A</a></p>\r\n— African National Congress (@MYANC) <a href=\"https://twitter.com/MYANC/status/1500083419136630784?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 5, 2022</a></blockquote>\r\n<script async src=\"https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"></script>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“The ANC also calls on MultiChoice to reconsider its decision of censorship and immediately reinstate Russian TV on its platform,” added Mabe. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IFP has argued that South Africa has failed to act on Russia’s invasion, while the EFF has said that Africa must adopt a </span><a href=\"https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/south-africa/2022-02-25-adopt-a-policy-of-non-alignment-heres-how-ndlozi-believes-africa-should-handle-russia-ukraine-conflict/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">policy of non-alignment</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and not take sides in the conflict. </span>\r\n\r\n<b>Civil society response </b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Nelson Mandela Foundation on Saturday </span><a href=\"https://www.nelsonmandela.org/news/entry/media-statement-ukraine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">called for</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a “cessation of hostilities and the restoration of peace in the region. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“We have urged the South African government to show leadership at this critical moment and press for a ceasefire so that rigorous negotiations on the future can be mapped out. We have indicated to the government our availability to assist in this regard,” the foundation said. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The foundation noted the complexity of the situation, the “vagaries of international rules of engagement”, and the </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-03-03-south-africans-fleeing-ukraine-encounter-physical-threats-racism-and-confusing-information/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">racism</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at certain borders. </span>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Statement: The Nelson Mandela Foundation has been following closely the invasion of Ukraine by Russian military forces. At play here are notions of the sovereignty of nation-states and the perceived right of such states to act in their own legitimate interests, and their assessment of the benefit or drawbacks of their actions.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Today, the foundation sees significant failures of leadership at many levels among contesting nations as the crisis in Ukraine unfolds,” the foundation said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It added that it is “imperative that channels for peacemaking, negotiation and dialogue be pursued urgently and relentlessly”. </span><b>DM</b>",

"description": "Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa is the fifth and current president of South Africa, in office since 2018. He is also the president of the African National Congress (ANC), the ruling party in South Africa. He has pledged to address the country's high levels of poverty, unemployment, and inequality. He has also promised to fight corruption and to restore trust in the government.\r\n\r\nRamaphosa faces a number of challenges as president of South Africa. The country is still recovering from the legacy of apartheid, and there are deep divisions along racial, economic, and political lines. The economy is also struggling, and unemployment is high. South Africa was one of only 35 nations that abstained. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nicola Spurr, a South African citizen living in the UK, told </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick </span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that she had on Thursday, 3 March, written to the South African High Commissioner in London to express her deep concern that President Cyril Ramaphosa “has held back from condemning outright the invasion of Ukraine. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“It is very clear from the footage emerging daily, brought by a wide range of journalists and analysts based in the country and abroad, that this unwarranted attack by Russia is characterised by the use of cluster bombs, thermobaric bombs and artillery fire that is aimed at civilian, not just military, targets. The human and environmental cost of this war will be incalculable,” said Spurr. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“We are at a critical moment in this war where we still have an opportunity to de-escalate and persuade [Russian] President [Vladimir] Putin to stop. In addition to many South African students, “there are many others needing immediate financial support, accommodation and safe passage across Europe,” said Spurr. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Julie Gardiner, another South African to speak up on the conflict, told </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick </span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she felt ashamed to be South African and was disillusioned with South Africa and its stance on the invasion of Ukraine. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I am living in a country where the leaders have gone silent; lost their backbone and voice,” said Gardiner. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“[President Ramaphosa], you are taking the same stance as you always do — putting your head in the sand and hoping the problem will go away,” added Gardiner. “Watch the news — innocent people are being killed and displaced. A tragedy is happening on our watch, and we are doing nothing.”</span><b> </b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Political parties have been </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-03-03-da-lights-up-city-hall-in-solidarity-with-ukraine-while-anc-government-abstains-from-un-vote-opposing-russian-invasion/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">divided</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Russia’s decision to invade Ukraine. The DA has come out strongly in support of Ukraine while the ANC remains largely internally divided over the issue. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Sunday, the DA </span><a href=\"https://www.da.org.za/2022/03/da-launches-petition-regarding-sas-complicit-stance-on-russia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">launched a petition</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the South African government to take a “decisive stand” on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the face of such an overwhelming atrocity, South Africa cannot stand idly by while its comrade ravishes a neighbouring country. (Photo: Vita Valkina)[/caption]\r\n\r\nThe DA called on the South African government to:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Ensure that Russia is held accountable to the Geneva Convention and international law;</li>\r\n \t<li>Ensure that Russia does not use any weapons that violate the Lieber Code; and</li>\r\n \t<li>Not assist in facilitating or hosting any monies, transactions or business deals that could counter the sanctions that have been introduced by the international community as measures to bring about an immediate withdrawal.</li>\r\n</ul>\r\nThe ANC has condemned MultiChoice and called on it to reconsider its “decision of censorship”, following the service provider’s <a href=\"https://www.news24.com/channel/tv/news/rt-goes-dark-in-sa-after-global-distributor-cuts-feed-20220302\">announcement</a> on Thursday, 3 March, that the Russian state-backed channel Russia Today (RT) would no longer be available on DStv until further notice.\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“The African National Congress (ANC) notes the draconian decision by the European Union (EU) to impose sanctions on Russia and its entities, including global media organisations following the escalation of hostilities between Ukraine and Russia. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Subsequently, this has resulted in the South African MultiChoice platform unilaterally withdrawing Russian TV from its offerings, impacting negatively on the freedom of choice to subscribers and limiting their consumption of news on the developments in the Ukraine-Russia conflict,” ANC national spokesperson Pule Mabe said on Saturday. </span>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https://twitter.com/MYANC?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@MYANC</a> statement on Multichoice removing Russia TV from its platform. <a href=\"https://t.co/PFtSs7Yu7A\">pic.twitter.com/PFtSs7Yu7A</a></p>\r\n— African National Congress (@MYANC) <a href=\"https://twitter.com/MYANC/status/1500083419136630784?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 5, 2022</a></blockquote>\r\n<script async src=\"https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"></script>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“The ANC also calls on MultiChoice to reconsider its decision of censorship and immediately reinstate Russian TV on its platform,” added Mabe. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IFP has argued that South Africa has failed to act on Russia’s invasion, while the EFF has said that Africa must adopt a </span><a href=\"https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/south-africa/2022-02-25-adopt-a-policy-of-non-alignment-heres-how-ndlozi-believes-africa-should-handle-russia-ukraine-conflict/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">policy of non-alignment</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and not take sides in the conflict. </span>\r\n\r\n<b>Civil society response </b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Nelson Mandela Foundation on Saturday </span><a href=\"https://www.nelsonmandela.org/news/entry/media-statement-ukraine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">called for</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a “cessation of hostilities and the restoration of peace in the region. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“We have urged the South African government to show leadership at this critical moment and press for a ceasefire so that rigorous negotiations on the future can be mapped out.
