This community of dedicated individuals has been instrumental in enabling impactful journalism. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 31,000 Insiders cover 40% of Daily Maverick’s costs, directly funding investigative reporting that holds power to account and protects the public interest. Their commitment has empowered us to produce stories that reshape society, and to continue to pursue truth and protect democracy.</span>\r\n<h4><b>The impact</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since our founding, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has consistently tackled the complex and often hidden forces shaping society. Our most impactful investigations include:</span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><em>September 2012: </em>Greg Marinovich’s exposé, “<a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2012-09-08-the-murder-fields-of-marikana-the-cold-murder-fields-of-marikana/\">The Murder Fields of Marikana</a>”, revealed the tragic police involvement in the killing of 34 striking miners, challenging our understanding of state power;</li>\r\n \t<li><em>June 2017:</em> In collaboration with amaBhungane,<a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-06-01-ten-revelations-made-by-the-guptaleaks-that-changed-the-course-of-sa/\"> #GuptaLeaks </a>exposed the vast influence the Gupta family held over South Africa’s state structures, ultimately contributing to President Jacob Zuma’s resignation and fuelling the fight against corruption;</li>\r\n \t<li><em>October 2018: </em>Pauli van Wyk’s “<a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2018-11-21-vbs-bank-heist-effs-family-ties-and-moneyed-connections/\">The Great VBS Heist</a>” uncovered corruption involving high-profile individuals, including Julius Malema, prompting a national outcry over political exploitation;</li>\r\n \t<li><em>February 2021:</em> Pieter-Louis Myburgh’s report on the <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-10-19-digital-vibes-scandal-the-story-behind-the-story/\">Digital Vibes scandal</a> led to Minister Zweli Mkhize’s resignation, underscoring the role of journalism in holding power accountable;</li>\r\n \t<li><em>October 2022: </em>Rebecca Davis’s investigation exposed <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-10-03-dark-days-accusations-of-capture-and-governance-instability-rock-uct/\">UCT vice-chancellor Mamokgethi Phakeng for misleading the university’s governing bodies</a> and highlighted governance issues, reinforcing the importance of transparency in South Africa’s institutions;</li>\r\n \t<li><em>2016-2023: </em>Marianne Thamm doggedly covered the controversies around Western Cape High Court Judge President John Hlophe. "description": "Eskom is the primary electricity supplier and generator of power in South Africa. It is a state-owned enterprise that was established in 1923 as the Electricity Supply Commission (ESCOM) and later changed its name to Eskom. The company is responsible for generating, transmitting, and distributing electricity to the entire country, and it is one of the largest electricity utilities in the world, supplying about 90% of the country's electricity needs. It generates roughly 30% of the electricity used\r\nin Africa.\r\n\r\nEskom operates a variety of power stations, including coal-fired, nuclear, hydro, and renewable energy sources, and has a total installed capacity of approximately 46,000 megawatts. The company is also responsible for maintaining the electricity grid infrastructure, which includes power lines and substations that distribute electricity to consumers.\r\n\r\nEskom plays a critical role in the South African economy, providing electricity to households, businesses, and industries, and supporting economic growth and development. However, the company has faced several challenges in recent years, including financial difficulties, aging infrastructure, and operational inefficiencies, which have led to power outages and load shedding in the country.\r\n\r\nDaily Maverick has reported on this extensively, including its recently published investigations from the Eskom Intelligence Files which demonstrated extensive sabotage at the power utility. Intelligence reports obtained by Daily Maverick linked two unnamed senior members of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Cabinet to four criminal cartels operating inside Eskom. The intelligence links the cartels to the sabotage of Eskom’s power stations and to a programme of political destabilisation which has contributed to the current power crisis.",
