It was apparently sent to thousands of journalists across the world and all city councillors.</span></span></span></span></p>\r\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The message was written in the style of a City press release. </span></span></span></p>\r\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: Open Sans, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Here is a screenshot of the fake email:</span></span></span></span></p>\r\n<p class=\"western\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-433583\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/SpoofEmaiilFromRTC-20191002.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1343\" height=\"2280\" /></p>\r\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Upon a first — and even a second — glance it looked exactly like a City of Cape Town email. The fact that it was a fake wasn’t obvious unless you looked at the email header information, which hardly anyone ever does when reading emails. (GroundUp came very close to falling for it and nearly updated our </span></span></span><a href=\"https://www.groundup.org.za/article/satire-and-city-zombies-and-dead-president-protest-cape-town/\"><span style=\"color: #26aae2;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">article on Monday’s protest</span></span></span></a><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">. Some journalists expressed anger at a stunt like this being pulled during the age of fake electronic news.)</span></span></span></p>\r\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The email “denounced” the actions of the Yes Men and Reclaim the City. It highlighted their claim that the City was replicating the policies of apartheid-era spatial planning. The email then claimed that the City had already decided to adopt policy decisions that Reclaim the City was calling for. These were:</span></span></span></p>\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>\r\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"> <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Ending mass evictions of people occupying City-owned land;</span></span></span></p>\r\n</li>\r\n \t<li>\r\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"> <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Upgrading all informal settlements;</span></span></span></p>\r\n</li>\r\n \t<li>\r\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"> <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Shutting down all temporary relocation areas, including Blikkiesdorp, and moving the residents there to housing nearer the city centre;</span></span></span></p>\r\n</li>\r\n \t<li>\r\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"> <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Ceasing the sale of all City-owned land; and</span></span></span></p>\r\n</li>\r\n \t<li>\r\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"> <span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Rejecting policy direction from large developers.</span></span></span></p>\r\n</li>\r\n</ul>\r\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><i>GroundUp</i></span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"> wrote to the City on Tuesday pointing out that there was one serious aspect to the spoof, “and that is the five policy changes that Reclaim the City are calling for”, and asking for comment on these five issues.</span></span></span></p>\r\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">City media manager Luthando Tyhalibongo responded: “We have communicated on these issues on multiple occasions and we will not be entertaining these false accusations and claims by Reclaim The City.” </span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><u><b>DM</b></u></span></span></span></p>\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" style=\"display: none; width: 1px;\" src=\"https://thirdpartyhits.groundup.org.za/counter/hit/dailymaverick/city-cape-town-refuses-respond-activist-prank\" alt=\"\" />",
