(Image: Supplied)</p>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://twitter.com/cityofjoburgza/status/1418205882299699200\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One employee</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Department of Human Settlements was arrested last year and </span><a href=\"https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/south-africa/2022-02-21-three-arrested-for-using-joburg-mmcs-face-in-housing-fraud-scheme/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three suspects</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> not employed by the department were apprehended in February in connection with housing scams, and MMC Mabaso believes more employees could be in cahoots with the scammers. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“We are still investigating to see if there are other employees from the Department of Human Settlements involved in this syndicate. There is definitely something wrong at Fleurhof and someone in the department knows what’s happening,” he said. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mabaso said that Fleurhof had been identified as a hotspot for housing scams in the city and had seen a series of land invasions, with scammers allegedly selling RDP houses for prices ranging from R3,000 to R20,000 as well as opportunities to jump the housing queue. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phalatse said the City of Johannesburg had asked law enforcement officials to help find and arrest guilty parties. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She said it was part of “a growing trend where scammers put up fake and fraudulent social media posts and accounts to swindle unsuspecting victims out of their money and then disappear [after] promising them an opportunity to give them a jump on the RDP housing queue [or] to sell them non-existing houses.
