The Climate Resilience Symposium 2024 is under way in Pretoria, the Nelson Mandela Foundation is focusing its 2024 Mandela Day work on priority social justice areas – early childhood development, food security and just cities – and TEDx hosts talks on the world’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

From Monday, 15 July to Wednesday, 17 July, National Treasury, the World Bank, the Presidential Climate Commission and a range of partner organisations are hosting the Climate Resilience Symposium 2024 in Pretoria.

The theme is “Moving the needle on climate change and just transition: the role of the National Treasury”.

“The objectives of the symposium are to integrate climate goals into macro-fiscal and finance policy; improve government coordination by mainstreaming climate change considerations into the intergovernmental fiscal system; profile the National Treasury’s contribution to climate action; and advance and promote policy, advocacy, green growth and collaboration in addressing climate change challenges across sectors,” the organisers say.

civil society watchOn Wednesday, 17 July at 3pm, the International Labour Research and Information Group will hold a public launch of its latest booklet, A People’s History of Water Privatisation.

That requires us to better understand and learn lessons from history, framed by multiple forms of water privatisation and lived realities and struggles of the broad working class,” it says.

The speakers include Dale McKinley, Koni Benson and Faeza Meyer.

The venue is 41 Salt River Road, Salt River, Cape Town, and the launch will also be live-streamed on ILRIG’s social media platforms.
