"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A farce is a form of comedy that uses a patently ridiculous situation to entertain an audience. This one, regrettably, is not intentionally farcical: COP27 — arguably the most </span><a href=\"https://mg.co.za/opinion/2022-08-29-cop27-is-a-major-opportunity-for-countries-to-deal-with-climate-challenges/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">important climate conference</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the international calendar — is being </span><a href=\"https://english.ahram.org.eg/NewsContent/10/1255/476935/COP/Sharm-ElSheikh/CocaCola-to-sponsor-COP-.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sponsored by Coca-Cola</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the world’s foremost </span><a href=\"https://www.greenpeace.org/international/press-release/55960/coca-cola-biggest-plastic-polluter-sponsor-cop27-greenpeace-reaction/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">producer of plastic waste</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Instead of being entertained, the world seems </span><a href=\"https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-63096760\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alarmed</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Rightly so.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From 6 to 18 November, world leaders will head to Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt to attend </span><a href=\"https://unfccc.int/cop27\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COP27</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the 27</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The UNFCCC is an important international convention that launched the issue of climate change on the global agenda and enabled ground-breaking agreements like the </span><a href=\"https://unfccc.int/resource/docs/convkp/kpeng.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kyoto Protocol</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the </span><a href=\"https://treaties.un.org/pages/ViewDetails.aspx?src=TREATY&mtdsg_no=XXVII-7-d&chapter=27&clang=_en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paris Agreement</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to reduce and limit greenhouse-gas emissions.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The World Health Organization Council on the Economics of Health for All issued a </span><a href=\"https://cdn.who.int/media/docs/default-source/council-on-the-economics-of-health-for-all/who_council_statement-cop27.pdf?sfvrsn=4c843f22_3&download=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statement</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on October 13 asserting that COP27 is our last chance to achieve a healthy future for humanity, and a key theme of the conference thus focuses on the urgency of delivering for people and the planet. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World leaders attending previous COP meetings have also noted that planetary health and human health are indivisible. The Paris Agreement has been called the most important </span><a href=\"https://unfccc.int/news/the-paris-agreement-is-a-health-agreement-who\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public health agreement</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the century, given the links between planetary and human health. The aggravating contribution of climate change to communicable and non-communicable diseases was noted in a </span><a href=\"https://www.who.int/publications/i/item/cop24-special-report-health-climate-change\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">special report</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emanating from COP24, held in Poland in 2018. The World Health Organization </span><a href=\"https://www.who.int/news/item/01-01-2020-promoting-and-protecting-health-through-the-unfccc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">collaborates</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the UNFCCC in monitoring the cross-over between policies impacting health and climate.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Mass polluter, water user and contributor to human ill health</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coca-Cola has been the world’s top plastic producer for </span><a href=\"https://healthpolicy-watch.news/coca-cola-is-already-sponsoring-obesity-why-is-it-sponsoring-egypts-cop27/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four years</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> running (sharing this dubious honour with PepsiCo). Coca-Cola produces more than </span><a href=\"https://www.greenly.earth/blog-en/coca-cola-sponsors-cop27-but-why-is-it-a-problem\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">120 billion single-use plastic bottles</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> every year and in 2019, it admitted to using </span><a href=\"https://www.bbc.com/news/newsbeat-47569233?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Byahoo.north.america%5D-%5Blink%5D-%5Bnews%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3 million tonnes</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of plastic packaging in a year. Coca-Cola is defending the sponsorship by </span><a href=\"https://www.prweek.com/article/1801257/coca-cola-defends-cop27-sponsorship-despite-greenwashing-criticism\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claiming</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it is working to reduce its environmental impact — a claim that holds no water considering that its year-on-year carbon emissions actually </span><a href=\"https://www.downtoearth.org.in/news/climate-change/irony-just-died-coca-cola-among-biggest-global-polluters-to-sponsor-cop27-85355\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from 2020 to 2021.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of things that hold water, Coca-Cola uses more than </span><a href=\"https://d3.harvard.edu/platform-rctom/submission/coca-colas-newest-competitor-water-supply/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">300 billion litres</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of water annually on its products, with </span><a href=\"https://www.theverge.com/2018/5/31/17377964/coca-cola-water-sustainability-recycling-controversy-investigation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">35 litres of water </span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">needed to make every half-litre of Coke. Water is an ingredient in Coca-Cola products, and is used at many points in the beverage supply chain. The agricultural-ingredient supply chain accounts for 80% of the company’s water use, which would include, for example, the water needed to grow sugarcane and sugar beet. To ensure it can access this massive quantity of water, Coca-Cola taps into local water sources. For example, in India Coca-Cola operated 58 water-intensive bottling plants, while at one time, </span><a href=\"https://www.thoughtco.com/coca-cola-groundwater-depletion-in-india-1204204\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thirsty local residents</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were forced to rely on trucked-in water supply from the government. One </span><a href=\"https://www.thoughtco.com/coca-cola-groundwater-depletion-in-india-1204204\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">local source</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said that in India, </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“[d]rinking Coke is like drinking farmer’s blood”. At the same time, a local NGO reported that Coca-Cola was offloading </span><a href=\"http://www.indiaresource.org/news/2003/4725.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cadmium-laden waste in the southern state of Kerala</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and producing beverages tested in Delhi that contained </span><a href=\"http://www.indiaresource.org/news/2003/4725.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high levels of four different pesticides</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span>\r\n\r\n<hr />\r\n\r\n<strong>Visit <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za?utm_source=direct&utm_medium=in_article_link&utm_campaign=homepage\"><em>Daily Maverick's</em> home page</a> for more news, analysis and investigations</strong>\r\n\r\n<hr />\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coca-Cola also pledged to be </span><a href=\"https://www.theverge.com/2018/5/31/17377964/coca-cola-water-sustainability-recycling-controversy-investigation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">water neutral</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> — a term coined locally at the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg. However, in 2015, Coca-Cola only managed to offset a mere 2 billion litres — </span><a href=\"https://www.theverge.com/2018/5/31/17377964/coca-cola-water-sustainability-recycling-controversy-investigation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less than 1%</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of its total water footprint. Coincidentally, 2 billion is the same number of </span><a href=\"https://www.who.int/en/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/drinking-water\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">human beings</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that live in water-stressed countries, which are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of water-intense industries.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coca-Cola has a questionable record not only when it comes to planetary health — its record on human health is abysmal. Research has shown that the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is a significant contributor to </span><a href=\"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/ijpo.12914?casa_token=AqXW-aL7oXYAAAAA%3Ahps3mURlVpTIOcgnNCl0Tc6Gf5eKkv75_Vr_FGg61d6hJJ3j7OCUL3jS4eeNE7sGf3ABHSqaSZnmZhV9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overweight and obesity</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which in turn leads to </span><a href=\"https://www.mdpi.com/2072-6643/13/8/2636/htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non-communicable diseases</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NCDs) such as cancer, type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. NCDs are the leading cause of death in </span><a href=\"https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SH.DTH.NCOM.ZS?locations=ZA\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Africa</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (51%), and </span><a href=\"https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/noncommunicable-diseases#:~:text=Key%20facts,%2D%20and%20middle%2Dincome%20countries.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worldwide</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (74%). To quote Katie Dain, CEO of the NCD Alliance, in </span><a href=\"https://healthpolicy-watch.news/coca-cola-is-already-sponsoring-obesity-why-is-it-sponsoring-egypts-cop27/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health Policy Watch</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in response to the announcement of the COP27 sponsorship she said, “Coca-Cola is already a de facto sponsor of the global obesity epidemic”. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are not surprised. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coca-Cola’s sponsorship of COP27 is a form of </span><a href=\"https://www.wionews.com/photos/big-brands-like-coca-cola-found-guilty-of-greenwashing-what-is-this-and-why-is-it-problematic-493682\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">greenwashing</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a deceptive form of advertising where false or exaggerated claims are made in relation to the positive impact that a company, brand or product is making towards the environment) that </span><a href=\"https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/oct/04/cop27-climate-summit-sponsorship-polluter-coca-cola-condemned-as-greenwash?CMP=share_btn_link\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has already been condemned for this</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in at least English-language media. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not the first time they have done this. A previous sponsorship that exemplified a similar level of green-washing, given Coke’s exorbitant water usage to make their products, was seen in Coca-Cola’s 2006 sponsorship of </span><a href=\"https://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/WO0603/S00376.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the World Water Forum</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Mexico. This sponsorship aged poorly given that several cities in Mexico have now reached their </span><a href=\"https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2022/jul/28/water-is-the-real-thing-but-millions-of-mexicans-are-struggling-without-it\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">day zero</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (which South Africans recently learned meant that the water supply has run out completely) while Coca-Cola manages to continue production using private wells.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Various other companies’ marketing campaigns have used this type of strategy and others such as </span><a href=\"https://www.fairplanet.org/story/genuine-pride-or-corporate-rainbow-washing/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rainbow-washing</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (co-opting LGBTQI+ friendly dialogues) and </span><a href=\"https://www.forbes.com/sites/timothyjmcclimon/2022/10/03/bluewashing-joins-greenwashing-as-the-new-corporate-whitewashing/?sh=4c3e4475660c\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blue-washing</span></a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(using social-good narratives in their marketing). </span>\r\n<h4><b>What is needed</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a bigger discussion to be had by policymakers as well as the broader population on the space we allow these corporate behemoths to occupy, and how we more forcefully call out behaviour that is killing us and our planet. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While greenwashing seems to be a common enough trend to make it unsurprising, we still need to fight against this type of unethical corporate behaviour, which undermines efforts such as COP27 that have the potential to save our planet and our health. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Africa’s Minister of the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment (DFFE), Barbara Creecy, has been a </span><a href=\"https://www.news24.com/fin24/Climate_Future/News/south-africa-lays-out-climate-demands-to-rich-polluters-ahead-of-cop27-20220915\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">major voice</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at previous COP conferences and one assumes she will lead the South African delegation to Egypt this year. It is imperative that Minister Creecy calls out this blatantly unethical conduct by Coca-Cola at an international level, especially given South Africa’s own status as a water-scarce country and the continuous fight against plastic pollution, where we see </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-02-17-south-africa-adopts-marine-plastic-pollution-treaty-ahead-of-un-environmental-meeting/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14 million tonnes of plastic ending up in the marine ecosystem annually</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is and should be a global concern for everyone living on this planet.
