"contents": "<h4><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read the first part of this article: </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-16-exhausting-the-exhausted-how-employers-and-insurers-cruelly-add-to-the-burden-of-long-covid/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exhausting the exhausted – how employers and insurers cruelly add to the burden of Long Covid</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> </span></em></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The daily number of Covid-19 deaths may have ceased to frighten most people, but the continuing threat of mass disability should be causing more alarm. At least 10% of Covid infections result in </span><a href=\"https://chronicillnessinclusion.org.uk/2021/04/28/what-are-energy-impairment-and-elci/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">energy-limiting chronic illness</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ELCI) and there are already an estimated </span><a href=\"https://www.nature.com/articles/s41579-022-00846-2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">65 million</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* people suffering from <a href=\"https://www.nicd.ac.za/diseases-a-z-index/disease-index-covid-19/long-covid/\">Long Covid</a> worldwide.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In May 2023, the Office for National Statistics published figures that showed that </span><a href=\"https://www.independent.co.uk/business/unemployment-statistics-sickness-ons-b2339882.html#:~:text=Official%20figures%20from%20the%20Office,long%20Covid%20on%20the%20population.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.5 million people in the UK</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were out of work due to long-term sickness - more than at any time since records began. The unprecedented rise, attributed to Long Covid, is mirrored in the US, where the figure could be as high as </span><a href=\"https://www.cnbc.com/2023/01/30/long-covid-has-underappreciated-role-in-labor-gap-study.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4 million</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comparable statistics are not available for South Africa, although it has been estimated that </span><a href=\"https://www.devex.com/news/over-6-5-million-south-africans-could-be-affected-by-long-covid-105094\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6.5 million South Africans</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could be affected by Long Covid. In the context of such an emergency, we can be proud of the world-leading research being done at Stellenbosch University by </span><a href=\"https://www.resiapretorius.net/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor Resia Pretorius</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into </span><a href=\"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9356426/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">post-viral microclotting</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Long Covid and similar </span><a href=\"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0268960X2300036X?via%3Dihub\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">endothelial dysfunction in ME</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Her investigations show chronic patients suffering an “</span><a href=\"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0268960X2300036X?via%3Dihub\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">energy- and/or oxygen-deficit</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">” problem on a cellular metabolic level resulting in </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-05-the-seven-deadly-symptoms-of-me-and-long-covid/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appalling daily symptoms</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Urgent pressure needs to be put on our government to stand up for the rights of the Sick and break the pattern of </span><a href=\"https://www.researchgate.net/publication/271199429_The_influence_of_the_private_insurance_industry_on_the_UK_welfare_reforms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insurance industry-funded research being used to deny disability</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to those with “</span><a href=\"https://www.health.harvard.edu/diseases-and-conditions/invisible-illness-more-than-meets-the-eye\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">invisible illness</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">”. </span>\r\n<h4><strong>Big Lies and medical scandals\r\n</strong></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We must go back more than five decades to understand how the venal back-scratching politics of one cabal of powerful men in the global medico-industrial complex led to what one British MP has called “</span><em><a href=\"https://www.healthcarehubris.com/post/media-silence-on-the-politics-driving-one-of-the-biggest-medical-scandals-of-the-21st-century\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one of the biggest medical scandals of the ... century</span></a></em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1955 “</span><a href=\"https://www.meaction.net/learn/what-is-me/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myalgic Encephalomyelitis</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">” (ME) was the name given by </span><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Melvin_Ramsay\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr Melvin Ramsay</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on identifying a polio-like syndrome displayed by 292 staff with disabling fatigue at London’s </span><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/1955_Royal_Free_Hospital_outbreak\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Royal Free Hospital</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There had been other</span><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/List_of_myalgic_encephalomyelitis_and_chronic_fatigue_syndrome_outbreaks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> outbreaks</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showing similar inflammation in the brain and spinal cord, such as those affecting 198 people at the </span><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/1934_Los_Angeles_atypical_polio_outbreak\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Los Angeles</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> County General Hospital in 1934, and another 488 in</span><a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akureyri_disease\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Iceland</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> around 1948. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1969 ME was uncontroversially defined as a </span><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/World_Health_Organization\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">neurological disease by the WHO</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But in 1970, two young male psychiatrists re-examined Ramsay’s case notes and decided - <em>simply because most of those affected were young female nurses</em> - that a more likely explanation was “</span><a href=\"https://www.tiktok.com/@bmh555/video/7010024872545946885\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">epidemic hysteria</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">”. This would almost be hysterically funny, if it hadn’t become the medically accepted standpoint for the next 50 years.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"http://meassociation.org.uk/2017/05/during-me-awareness-week-we-revisit-the-toxic-legacy-of-mcevedy-and-beard-10-may-2017/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McEvedy and Beard</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> came to their conclusion without interviewing any of the patients themselves, many of whom remained too ill to work decades later. Their </span><a href=\"https://thesciencebit.net/2020/07/27/post-covid-syndrome-myalgic-encephalomyelitis-and-the-recurring-pseudoscience-of-mass-hysteria/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blatant misogyny</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> subsequently consigned millions of patients to the dustbin of medicine. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Big Lies such as “cigarettes are not harmful” or “climate change is not real” serve a potent financial purpose. In the era of Long Covid, vested interests continue to bolster the discredited theory that energy-limiting diseases such as ME (aka Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) are “</span><a href=\"https://thesciencebit.net/2018/11/03/the-triumph-of-eminence-based-medicine/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all in your head</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">” - despite its patent absurdity in the face of </span><a href=\"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0025619621005139\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overwhelming</span></a> <a href=\"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0268960X2300036X?via%3Dihub\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scientific evidence</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Simon_Wessely\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sir Simon Wessely</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, former president of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and current non-executive director on the board of NHS England, has </span><a href=\"https://longcovidadvocacy.substack.com/p/professor-catastrophe-simon-wessely\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">made a career out of “psychologising”</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> post-infectious energy-limiting conditions. He popularised the renaming of </span><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Myalgic_encephalomyelitis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myalgic Encephalomyelitis</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as the vaguer American term </span><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Chronic_fatigue_syndrome\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic Fatigue Syndrome</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the 1980s, and recast it as a mental health issue. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The </span><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Biopsychosocial_model\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biopsychosocial</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (BPS) model favoured by Wessely has frequently been applied to other illnesses with </span><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Medically_unexplained_physical_symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medically Unexplained Symptoms</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that are now understood to have an organic cause:</span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Peptic ulcer was thought to be caused by stress until the discovery of bacterium <em><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Helicobacter_pylori\">Helicobacter pylori</a></em> in 1983.</li>\r\n \t<li>In 2022, <a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Gulf_War_Illness\">Gulf War Illness</a>- which 20 years ago Wessely described as a “syndrome” brought on by “anxiety” - was proved to be <a href=\"https://utswmed.org/medblog/gulf-war-illness-cause/\">caused by exposure to sarin gas</a>, to which a quarter of veterans became vulnerable due to a genetic variant.</li>\r\n \t<li>Also last year, Epstein-Barr virus was discovered to be <a href=\"https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2022/01/epstein-barr-virus-may-be-leading-cause-of-multiple-sclerosis/\">the cause of Multiple Sclerosis</a>- which had been called “hysterical paralysis” right up until the invention of the CAT scan made demyelination of the brain visible.</li>\r\n</ul>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But by the 1990s, the “</span><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Wessely_school\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wessely School</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">” was dominating the field of ME/CFS in the UK. Their insistence on a psychological rather than physiological origin for the disease was most convenient for both governments and medical insurance companies seeking to avoid paying out disability benefits. As a result, psychologically focussed research continued to be well funded, whereas other applications proposing to study neuroinflammation or metabolic and immune dysfunction were </span><a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronic_fatigue_syndrome#Research_funding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">turned down</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before the effects of the pandemic even became apparent, the disease burden of ME in the US was already </span><a href=\"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32568148/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">twice that of HIV/Aids</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and over half of breast cancer, yet only received 7% of commensurate National Institute of Health funding.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tellingly however, although authorities and medical insurers continue to insist that energy-limiting chronic illness has a psychogenic origin, </span><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Blood_donation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all around the world</span></a> <a href=\"https://www.bbc.com/news/health-11465723\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people with ME are still banned from donating blood</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> - a huge red flag.</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\r\n</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In </span><a href=\"https://publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200607/cmselect/cmhealth/503/503we79.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evidence to the UK Parliament</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Professor Emeritus of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Sunderland </span><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Malcolm_Hooper\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malcolm Hooper</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> definitively described ME as “an inflammatory autoimmune disorder that progresses to a complex multisystem neuro-endocrine-immuno-microvascular disease with cardiac involvement”. Notably, ME can have a relapsing-remitting or progressive pattern, like MS, but is </span><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Multiple_sclerosis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">five times as prevalent</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor Hooper attested that global medical insurance giant </span><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/UNUM\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unum</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported in 1993 that ME/CFS came second in the list of their five most expensive chronic conditions, three places above Aids. Their “CFS Management Plan” stated: “<em>Unum stands to lose millions if we do not move quickly to address this increasing problem.</em>” </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\r\n</span>\r\n\r\nIn 2001, a research conference was assembled in Oxford <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">titled <a href=\"https://www.mostewartresearch.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/New-Labour-market-state-end-welfare-Jonathan-Rutherford.pdf\">Malingering and Illness Deception</a>.</span> Unum vice-president John LoCascio was present and many of the conference participants had received funding from the insurance company, including Simon Wessely and the Chief Medical Officer of the UK Department for Work & Pensions <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(DWP), </span><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Mansel_Aylward\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mansel Aylward</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span> Aylward was <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">subsequently </span><a href=\"https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/id/eprint/58235/1/1351_Shakespeare.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">responsible for manipulating the BPS model</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to</span> justify UK welfare reforms scrapping Incapacity Benefit and Disability Living Allowance, and replacing them with<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> </span><a href=\"https://www.theguardian.com/careers/2017/may/22/cruel-and-humiliating-why-fit-for-work-tests-are-failing-people-with-disabilities\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cruel and insidious</span></a> <a href=\"https://www.thecanary.co/uk/analysis/2023/02/13/independent-media-has-forced-the-dwp-to-release-previously-buried-universal-credit-figures/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work Capability Assessment</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2003, </span><a href=\"https://www.mostewartresearch.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/The-influence-of-the-private-insurance-industry-FINAL-EDIT-Jan-2015.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unum was fined</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> $31.7-million in a class action in California for running “disability denial factories”. In 2005, Unum was accused of being “an outlaw company … that for years has operated in an illegal fashion” by California insurance commissioner John Garamendi, when it was charged with more than 25 violations of state law and fined $8-million. By 2006, the state insurance commissioners of 48 American states approved a settlement that required Unum to reconsider 200,000 claims and to pay another $15-million in fines. </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\r\n</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2004, following his retirement from the DWP, </span><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Mansel_Aylward\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mansel Aylward</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was appointed as Director at the £1.6-million Unum Provident Centre for Psychosocial and Disability Research at Cardiff University (and subsequently knighted). In 2007, a Yale Law Professor exposed the </span><a href=\"https://www.mostewartresearch.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Yale-Law-Scool-UnumProvident-Scandal.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unum/Provident Scandal</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of benefit denials in the US and BBC News reported that the British government was being advised by an American insurance company with a reputation for </span><a href=\"https://disability-studies.leeds.ac.uk/wp-content/uploads/sites/40/library/The%20influence%20of%20the%20private%20insurance%20industry%20%20-%20FINAL%20-%20Jan%202015.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“racketeering”</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2008 an exposé in the </span><a href=\"https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2008/mar/17/epluribusunum\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Guardian</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> highlighted </span><a href=\"https://www.mostewartresearch.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/New-Labour-market-state-end-welfare-Jonathan-Rutherford.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the work of Professor Jonathan Rutherford</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> revealing how Unum had built influence to undermine the UK state sickness benefits system to boost sales of private disability insurance. Yet Unum was just one of 10 insurance companies cited by Professor Hooper in his 2007 </span><a href=\"https://publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200607/cmselect/cmhealth/503/503we79.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">testimony to Parliament</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> demonstrating how the eminent psychiatrists and DWP officials they funded as consultants showed “blatant conflict of interest”. </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\r\n</span>\r\n<h4><strong>The infamous PACE trial\r\n</strong></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The collusion reached an apex in the infamous </span><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/PACE_trial\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PACE trial</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a £5-million research project partly funded by the UK Department for Works and Pensions. Principal investigator </span><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Michael_Sharpe\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Sharpe</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a member of the Wessely School, did not disclose to PACE trial participants that he was a paid adviser to Unum.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Results published in 2011 seemed to prove the efficacy of Graded Exercise Therapy (GET) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in treating ME/CFS. But worldwide, thousands of people whose “mild” ME became “severe” following GET, leaving them permanently bedbound, expressed </span><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/PACE_trial#Petitions_and_Protests\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">outrage online</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2016, </span><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Alem_Matthees\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heroic efforts</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of </span><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Tom_Kindlon\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">patient advocates</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and </span><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Trial_By_Error\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">citizen scientists</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to release the full data exposed </span><a href=\"https://thesciencebit.net/2018/11/03/the-triumph-of-eminence-based-medicine/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">egregious flaws</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the findings, such as changing criteria for recovery halfway through the trial.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 100 researchers and clinicians signed an </span><a href=\"https://www.virology.ws/2018/08/13/trial-by-error-open-letter-to-the-lancet-version-3-0/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">open letter to The Lancet</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> requesting an independent reevaluation of the study. At a </span><a href=\"https://hansard.parliament.uk/commons/2018-02-20/debates/990746C7-9010-4566-940D-249F5026FF73/PACETrialPeopleWithME\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">debate</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the House of Commons in 2018, MP </span><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Carol_Monaghan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carol Monaghan</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stated that “<em>when the full details of the PACE trial become known, it will be considered one of the biggest medical scandals of the 21st century</em>”.</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\r\n</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The almost total </span><a href=\"https://www.healthcarehubris.com/post/media-silence-on-the-politics-driving-one-of-the-biggest-medical-scandals-of-the-21st-century\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">media silence</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on such a scoop is perhaps even more sinister. </span><a href=\"http://www.investinme.org/Article400%20Magical%20Medicine.shtml\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor Hooper and others</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have suggested that, in the UK, it may have much to do with the fact that the </span><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Science_Media_Centre\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Science Media Centre</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a supposedly independent body tasked with briefing the press on scientific research, was influenced by board member Sir Simon Wessely: “<em>Editors of broadsheet newspapers have confirmed that editorial policy will permit them only to publish items about ME/CFS that come from the SMC.</em>” </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journalists who challenge Wessely’s ideas in print tend to </span><a href=\"https://www.healthcarehubris.com/post/media-silence-on-the-politics-driving-one-of-the-biggest-medical-scandals-of-the-21st-century\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lose their jobs</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n<h4><strong>Righting the wrongs and wronging the rights</strong></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2021, after an enormous effort by patient advocates and allies, the UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence finally </span><a href=\"https://www.meaction.net/2021/10/29/final-nice-me-cfs-guideline-published-find-out-the-big-news/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">updated their guidelines</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> banning GET as harmful for people with ME. But after 50 years’ neglect, there is still no effective medication proven to mitigate their </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-05-the-seven-deadly-symptoms-of-me-and-long-covid/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gruelling daily symptoms</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychological therapy such as CBT is still the standard treatment offered to people diagnosed with ME around the world. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In South Africa, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-16-exhausting-the-exhausted-how-employers-and-insurers-cruelly-add-to-the-burden-of-long-covid/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insurance companies continue to demand inappropriate psych assessments</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from people with Long Covid. Globally, the medical insurance industry continues their deliberate ploy of exhausting people with energy-limiting diseases into abandoning their disability claims, raking in millions more profits for shareholders.</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\r\n</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to half a century of being </span><a href=\"https://me-pedia.org/wiki/Yuppie_Flu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">painted</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as “</span><a href=\"https://www.mostewartresearch.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/The-influence-of-the-private-insurance-industry-FINAL-EDIT-Jan-2015.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shirkers and scroungers</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">”, people disabled by</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> energy-limiting chronic illness have to suffer </span><a href=\"https://thesciencebit.net/2023/01/04/me-long-covid-and-the-history-of-medical-stigma-transcript/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stigma</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well as their “<a href=\"https://www.mostewartresearch.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/The-influence-of-the-private-insurance-industry-FINAL-EDIT-Jan-2015.pdf\">catastrophic</a>” symptoms. These patients are enduring disdain and dismissal similar to people living with HIV 40 years ago, but with a far </span><a href=\"https://www.healthrising.org/blog/2015/08/05/chronic-fatigue-syndrome-worse-mulitple-sclerosis-cancer/#:~:text=People%20with%20ME%2FCFS%20had,failure%20with%2015%25%20higher%20scores.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poorer quality of life than most chronic conditions</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On top of all that, insurance companies scamming the Sick are kicking us when we’re down. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 11th July, just as this article was about to be posted, The Guardian published a piece titled “</span><a href=\"https://web.archive.org/web/20230711163549/https://www.theguardian.com/society/2023/jul/11/chronic-fatigue-guidance-discouraging-exercise-is-flawed-say-researchers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ME/CFS guidance discouraging exercise is flawed, say researchers</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">”, arguably a </span><a href=\"https://thesciencebit.net/2023/07/12/the-cries-for-help-are-getting-louder-and-thats-a-good-sign/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blatant attempt by Wessely School </span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proponents of the BPS brigade to mount a rearguard action protecting their reputations, their vested interests and their insurance company masters’ bottom line. </span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://worldmealliance.org/2023/07/nice-guideline-is-robust-and-globally-supported/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A luta continua</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <strong>DM</strong></span>\r\n\r\n*This number of <a href=\"https://www.nature.com/articles/s41579-022-00846-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.nature.com/articles/s41579-022-00846-2&source=gmail&ust=1689670877666000&usg=AOvVaw1Ndw-kkcikZjWmtTulXqeS\">65 million</a> is based on a conservative estimate of one in 10 of all Covid-19 infections producing long-term post-viral complications.
