"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barely two weeks ago, Alexey Petrov, a former state security agent for Bulgaria, was assassinated while walking in Sofia in the presence of bodyguards.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Petrov, who </span><a href=\"https://apnews.com/article/bulgaria-businessman-killed-alexey-petrov-sofia-cf037024f839fd91a804a8aa10fca91c\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reportedly</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> survived at least two previous attempts on his life, died at the scene, while a woman who was with him was wounded and admitted to hospital.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The shooting occurred on 16 August 2023, barely three months after Krasimir Kamenov, his wife Gergana and two other Bulgarians believed to be their employees </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-30-constantia-killings-bulgarias-forewarning-to-sa-and-a-global-billion-dollar-crypto-scam/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were murdered</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the upmarket Cape Town suburb of Constantia on 25 May.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like Petrov, the four were shot.</span>\r\n\r\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iFM03D_32Y\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No arrests have been made for Petrov’s killing in Bulgaria or for the four assassinations in South Africa.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And Petrov’s murder has now brought up more questions about Kamenov, whose assassination opened a Pandora’s box of political claims.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Politics and crime</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among those making accusations in this arena is Bulgaria’s former chief prosecutor, Ivan Geshev.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick:</b> <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-07-04-gangsters-in-government-state-capture-parallels-between-south-african-and-bulgarian-criminals/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gangsters in government: State Capture parallels between South African and Bulgarian criminals</span></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three days after Petrov’s murder, Geshev took to Facebook, questioning whether that assassination was linked to Kamenov’s and others.</span>\r\n\r\n<iframe style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https://www.facebook.com/plugins/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fpermalink.php%3Fstory_fbid%3Dpfbid032KsgrHFby9Ca1sv5c11wUCjYRRDFh95CbGHBpt8rPJtK1oHef1gDKN6ahwccPabDl%26id%3D100092533561829&show_text=true&width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"310\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"></iframe>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geshev posted that during a press conference in March 2023, when he was still Bulgaria’s chief prosecutor, he revealed </span><a href=\"https://www.segabg.com/hot/category-bulgaria/geshev-pusna-krasimir-kamenov-kuro-za-izdirvane-interpol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an alleged State Capture-style plot</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to have him removed from office, which he accused Kamenov of driving.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kamenov, at that point, was in South Africa (and had been since about 2008).</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick:</b> <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-07-03-from-sa-to-romania-evidence-of-global-crooks-crafting-a-us-based-plot-to-topple-bulgarias-law-enforcers/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From SA to Romania – ‘Evidence’ of global crooks crafting a US-based plot to topple Bulgaria’s law enforcers</span></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his Facebook post, Geshev also referred to an incident on 1 May 2023 – </span><a href=\"https://apnews.com/article/bulgaria-chief-prosecutor-bomb-attack-e563bd9a3ed061ef68f9bd44b157f742\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an explosive device detonated</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> along a road near Sofia as his convoy drove by.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geshev, who was not hurt, alleged the blast was </span><a href=\"https://prb.bg/en/news/64664-statement-of-the-prosecutor-general-of-the-republic-of-bulgaria-ivan-geshev\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an attempt on his life</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, some of his detractors believed the bomb attack was staged to distract from Geshev’s poor performance as prosecuting boss.</span>\r\n<h4><b>‘Dodgy offer’</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his Facebook post on 19 August, Geshev also claimed that about two weeks after the bomb incident, which would have been mid-May, Petrov approached him and presented him with an “unprincipled offer” that Geshev accept an ambassador post, which Geshev did not.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“At the end of May, the shooting of [Kamenov] followed. (Photo: Interpol website)</em></p>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> previously reported that </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kamenov may have had information about Ruja Ignatova, of Bulgaria, who is among the US </span><a href=\"https://www.fbi.gov/wanted/topten/ruja-ignatova\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Federal Bureau of Investigation’s top 10 wanted suspects</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He may have planned to provide, or had been providing, information about her to the US.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick: </b><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-06-11-cryptoqueens-link-to-murder-of-bulgarians-in-sa/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constantia killings and FBI-wanted ‘Cryptoqueen’ Ruja Ignatova’s intriguing SA links</span></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ignatova allegedly headed a global crypto scam that operated under various names, including OneCoin and OneLife.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Coincidence or coordinated plot?</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for Geshev, he was </span><a href=\"https://www.president.bg/news7260/darzhavniyat-glava-rumen-radev-osvobodi-ot-dlazhnost-glavniya-prokuror-ivan-geshev.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dismissed as Bulgaria’s chief prosecutor on 15 June</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2023.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his Facebook post this month, referring to what happened to Kamenov and Petrov, as well as other assassinations, he said: “A string of coincidence or a large-scale plan? I am sure that Europol and the partner services assisting my assassination investigation will provide answers to these questions. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“As well as [about] other serious crimes committed in our country in recent months that our law enforcement agencies do not deal with or rather do not want to deal with.”</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Ongoing investigations</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of this week, no arrests were reported to have been made for Petrov’s assassination.</span>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Interior Minister: No Suspect for <a href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/Murder?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Murder</a> of Alexey Petrov So Far<a href=\"https://t.co/bj9ztKbuig\">https://t.co/bj9ztKbuig</a></p>\r\n— Bulgarian News Agency (@BTAnewsENG) <a href=\"https://twitter.com/BTAnewsENG/status/1694306482643239158?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 23, 2023</a></blockquote>\r\n<script async src=\"https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"></script>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were also no detained suspects in the Kamenov killing case.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Western Cape police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk told </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Tuesday, 29 August that the matter was still under investigation.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“No arrests [have] been made,” he said. “The investigation continues.”</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1739238\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/08-Ruja-Ignatova.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"765\" /> <em>Ruja Ignatova is one of the FBI's top 10 wanted suspects. Sharpened with AI)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>Wanted for murder</b></h4>\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> previously reported that the embassy of Bulgaria said it had told South African authorities that Kamenov was in this country and that he faced arrest – </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-30-constantia-killings-bulgarias-forewarning-to-sa-and-a-global-billion-dollar-crypto-scam/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">49 days before his assassination</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An Interpol Red Notice – an international request for authorities to arrest a listed figure – said Kamenov was wanted by Bulgaria in connection with a murder threat, murder and extortion.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was accused of being involved in the killing of a former policeman, Lyubomir Ivanov, who was fatally shot in Sofia in March 2022.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some news reports from Bulgaria alleged that Ivanov had </span><a href=\"https://eurocom.bg/new/pokazno-ubiystvo-eto-koy-e-zastrelyaniyat-v-sofiya-bivsh-politsay-i-izdirvan-ot-interpol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dubious links to the illicit cigarette trade</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n<h4><b>‘Leading martial arts personality’</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of Petrov, he had a deep political history linked to Bulgaria.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was also involved in martial arts, and two days after his murder the </span><a href=\"https://www.wkf.net/news-center-new/wkf-mourns-passing-of-bulgarian-karate-federation-president-alexey-petrov/2312\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Karate Federation posted a short tribute</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to him.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Considered one of the leading personalities in martial arts in Bulgaria and one of the founders of organised karate in the country, Mr Petrov headed the National Federation of Bulgaria for the past two decades,” it said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“A 6-dan Black Belt in Karate, Petrov was a multiple-time national champion and acted as a national coach before leading the Bulgarian Federation. (Photo: Gallo Images / Brenton Geach)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>State security, court, companies</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Associated Press</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> article provided further details about his background.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It </span><a href=\"https://apnews.com/article/bulgaria-businessman-killed-alexey-petrov-sofia-cf037024f839fd91a804a8aa10fca91c\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: “A karate champion and former state security agent, Petrov left his job in the police after the fall of communism to start a private business. It boomed, and he became an associate in over 50 companies by 2002.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“In 2010, he was arrested and charged with running a criminal group engaged in extortion, racketeering, drug trafficking, money laundering, and tax evasion.” (These charges are also prevalent in organised crime in South Africa.)</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report said he was released on bail, later acquitted and he went on to run as a candidate in a presidential election.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“In recent years, Petrov ran one of the biggest insurance companies in the country. overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https://www.facebook.com/plugins/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fpermalink.php%3Fstory_fbid%3Dpfbid032KsgrHFby9Ca1sv5c11wUCjYRRDFh95CbGHBpt8rPJtK1oHef1gDKN6ahwccPabDl%26id%3D100092533561829&show_text=true&width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"310\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"></iframe>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geshev posted that during a press conference in March 2023, when he was still Bulgaria’s chief prosecutor, he revealed </span><a href=\"https://www.segabg.com/hot/category-bulgaria/geshev-pusna-krasimir-kamenov-kuro-za-izdirvane-interpol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an alleged State Capture-style plot</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to have him removed from office, which he accused Kamenov of driving.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kamenov, at that point, was in South Africa (and had been since about 2008).</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick:</b> <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-07-03-from-sa-to-romania-evidence-of-global-crooks-crafting-a-us-based-plot-to-topple-bulgarias-law-enforcers/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From SA to Romania – ‘Evidence’ of global crooks crafting a US-based plot to topple Bulgaria’s law enforcers</span></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his Facebook post, Geshev also referred to an incident on 1 May 2023 – </span><a href=\"https://apnews.com/article/bulgaria-chief-prosecutor-bomb-attack-e563bd9a3ed061ef68f9bd44b157f742\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an explosive device detonated</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> along a road near Sofia as his convoy drove by.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geshev, who was not hurt, alleged the blast was </span><a href=\"https://prb.bg/en/news/64664-statement-of-the-prosecutor-general-of-the-republic-of-bulgaria-ivan-geshev\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an attempt on his life</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, some of his detractors believed the bomb attack was staged to distract from Geshev’s poor performance as prosecuting boss.</span>\r\n<h4><b>‘Dodgy offer’</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his Facebook post on 19 August, Geshev also claimed that about two weeks after the bomb incident, which would have been mid-May, Petrov approached him and presented him with an “unprincipled offer” that Geshev accept an ambassador post, which Geshev did not.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“At the end of May, the shooting of [Kamenov] followed. Sharpened with AI)</em>[/caption]\r\n<h4><b>Wanted for murder</b></h4>\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> previously reported that the embassy of Bulgaria said it had told South African authorities that Kamenov was in this country and that he faced arrest – </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-30-constantia-killings-bulgarias-forewarning-to-sa-and-a-global-billion-dollar-crypto-scam/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">49 days before his assassination</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An Interpol Red Notice – an international request for authorities to arrest a listed figure – said Kamenov was wanted by Bulgaria in connection with a murder threat, murder and extortion.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was accused of being involved in the killing of a former policeman, Lyubomir Ivanov, who was fatally shot in Sofia in March 2022.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some news reports from Bulgaria alleged that Ivanov had </span><a href=\"https://eurocom.bg/new/pokazno-ubiystvo-eto-koy-e-zastrelyaniyat-v-sofiya-bivsh-politsay-i-izdirvan-ot-interpol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dubious links to the illicit cigarette trade</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n<h4><b>‘Leading martial arts personality’</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of Petrov, he had a deep political history linked to Bulgaria.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was also involved in martial arts, and two days after his murder the </span><a href=\"https://www.wkf.net/news-center-new/wkf-mourns-passing-of-bulgarian-karate-federation-president-alexey-petrov/2312\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Karate Federation posted a short tribute</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to him.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Considered one of the leading personalities in martial arts in Bulgaria and one of the founders of organised karate in the country, Mr Petrov headed the National Federation of Bulgaria for the past two decades,” it said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“A 6-dan Black Belt in Karate, Petrov was a multiple-time national champion and acted as a national coach before leading the Bulgarian Federation. It boomed, and he became an associate in over 50 companies by 2002.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“In 2010, he was arrested and charged with running a criminal group engaged in extortion, racketeering, drug trafficking, money laundering, and tax evasion.” (These charges are also prevalent in organised crime in South Africa.)</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report said he was released on bail, later acquitted and he went on to run as a candidate in a presidential election.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“In recent years, Petrov ran one of the biggest insurance companies in the country.
