"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A bomb blast and accusations about a State Capture-style conspiracy targeting elements of the Bulgarian government have ties to the murder suspect wanted there and who himself was killed in Cape Town last week.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In </span><a href=\"https://www.168chasa.bg/article/14012243\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">March</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and April this year, Bulgarian media reported that the country’s Prosecutor General, Ivan Geshev, and some of his colleagues, had alleged that </span><a href=\"https://www.segabg.com/hot/category-bulgaria/geshev-pusna-krasimir-kamenov-kuro-za-izdirvane-interpol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Krasimir Kamenov was involved in conspiring</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against him.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geshev, who has publicly said he has “information on… </span><a href=\"https://prb.bg/en/news/64771-prosecutor-general-ivan-geshev%3A-i-will-finish-my-mandate-no-matter-what-it-costs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trading in influence and political corruption</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,” reportedly detailed how criminal elements had ganged up against the parts of government going after crooks, roughly describing what is known in South Africa as </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-08-15-the-zondo-report-has-clearly-fingered-the-enablers-of-state-capture-now-its-time-for-reparations/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State Capture</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Publicised location</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 9 April a Bulgarian media outlet also reported that Kamenov had allegedly been involved in murders there </span><a href=\"https://novini247.com/novini/ukrivashtiyat-se-v-yuar-krasimir-kamenov-karo-e-porachal_6198881.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and was in South Africa</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The publishing of that detail meant that his location, in terms of the country he was in, was in the public domain.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from authorities, Kamenov’s enemies could therefore have been tipped off about his whereabouts.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the various allegations about him emerging in Bulgaria, he was, in a sense, a marked man.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kamenov was indeed in South Africa, as reported in Bulgaria — and on 25 May he, together with his wife, Gergana, and two others believed to be their employees, were </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-25-wanted-bulgarian-fugitive-believed-to-be-among-4-murdered-in-constantia/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found murdered</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a home in the upmarket Cape Town suburb of Constantia.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They had been shot.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this week </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported that the Embassy of Bulgaria said that on 6 April this year — </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-30-constantia-killings-bulgarias-forewarning-to-sa-and-a-global-billion-dollar-crypto-scam/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">49 days before Kamenov and the three others were assassinated</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> — it told South African authorities that he was in the country and that he faced arrest.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1713437\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/ED_452555.jpg\" alt=\"Constantia killings\" width=\"720\" height=\"361\" /> <em>Crime scene experts process a multiple murder scene involving four foreign nationals in Constantia on 25 May, 2023 in Cape Town, South Africa. (Photo: Gallo Images/Brenton Geach)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>High-priority international suspect</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An </span><a href=\"https://www.interpol.int/en/How-we-work/Notices/View-Red-Notices#2023-20341\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interpol red notice</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> — an international request for authorities to arrest a listed figure — said Kamenov was wanted by Bulgaria in connection with a murder threat, murder and extortion.</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had also reported that, aside from being wanted over murder, Kamenov may also have had information about a $4-billion crypto fraud scheme involving a US-wanted suspect who may — or may not — have been killed.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Issues linked to his name also stretch in another direction, a political one, because of the alleged State Capture-style conspiracy that Bulgaria’s Geshev spoke about in April.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where matter takes another twist.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1713435\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/ED_452560.jpg\" alt=\"Murder scene involving four foreign nationals in Constantia\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" /> <em>Crime scene experts process a multiple murder scene involving four foreign nationals in Constantia on May 25, 2023 in Cape Town, South Africa. (Photo: Gallo Images/Brenton Geach)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>‘Bomb intended to kill me’</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 1 May this year, weeks after Bulgarian media reported on Geshev’s comments about being targeted, </span><a href=\"https://apnews.com/article/bulgaria-chief-prosecutor-bomb-attack-e563bd9a3ed061ef68f9bd44b157f742\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an explosive device detonated</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> along a road near Sofia as Geshev’s convoy had driven by.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was not hurt.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bulgaria’s National Investigation Service head, Borislav Sarafov, </span><a href=\"https://apnews.com/article/bulgaria-chief-prosecutor-bomb-attack-e563bd9a3ed061ef68f9bd44b157f742\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">speaking to reporters</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, referred to the incident as “a terrorist act.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The European Public Protector’s Office issued </span><a href=\"https://www.eppo.europa.eu/en/news/statement-european-chief-prosecutor-attack-against-prosecutor-general-republic-bulgaria\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a statement</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> saying that “criminals who dare to target any member of the judiciary should be considered extremely dangerous and combatted with utmost determination.”</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://prb.bg/en/news/64664-statement-of-the-prosecutor-general-of-the-republic-of-bulgaria-ivan-geshev\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A statement by Geshev</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, published on the website of the Prosecutor’s Office of Bulgaria on 18 May, which happened to be a week before Kamenov was murdered, said: “I consider the bomb attack on me as an attempt intended to kill me.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, not everyone believed him.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.politico.eu/article/bomb-attack-bulgaria-prosecutor-staged-opposition/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Politico Europe reported</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that some thought the bomb attack may have been staged to derail attempts to hold him to account for not successfully cracking down on criminals who had infiltrated the state.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Staged attack suspicions</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It quoted Atanas Atanasov, co-chairman of the Democratic Bulgaria party, as saying the attack was clearly staged and: “This supposed assassination attempt has the main goal of thwarting the radical reform of the Prosecutor’s Office through glorification of the victim.”</span>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I missed this article by journalist Ivan Bakalov from May 2nd, but it sums up the latest developments quite well.</p>\r\n\"Why the bomb attack on Ivan Geshev is undoubtedly a PR stunt\"<a href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/Bulgaria?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Bulgaria</a> <a href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/MafiaState?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MafiaState</a> <a href=\"https://t.co/XXzc9UltxI\">https://t.co/XXzc9UltxI</a>\r\n\r\n— Dr Radosveta Vassileva (@radosveta_vass) <a href=\"https://twitter.com/radosveta_vass/status/1654767184088817665?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 6, 2023</a></blockquote>\r\n<script async src=\"https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"></script>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geshev, though, in his statement, was adamant he was targeted.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He said he had tackled domestic crime, including the murders of elderly people, and had tried to crack down on organised crime.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“We also continued with oligarchs, who everyone thought were untouchable, and now they are hiding in various destinations — </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-04-14-alleged-super-cartel-boss-freed-in-gupta-style-extradition-saga/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dubai</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Serbia, probably guarded by the Russians, paying lobbyists sums of 350,000 dollars and others,” he said.</span>\r\n<h4><b>‘Political mafia’ and ‘Russian influence’</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geshev added that cases of terrorism and “malicious Russian influence” were investigated.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“As a result, the prosecution was heavily attacked. The political mafia, the oligarchs, the criminals and all who want to continue stealing have united.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geshev also spoke of attempts to get him to resign.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“All of this shows that someone thinks I’m a flaw in the system and that I need to be rooted out so that the system can continue to function in the same way. The way that enables corruption and makes Bulgarian citizens live in poverty.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this journalist’s book, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/clash-of-the-cartels/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clash of the Cartels: Unmasking the global drug kingpins stalking South Africa</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a chapter focuses on Bulgaria.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The book details State Capture parallels between that country and South Africa.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick: </b><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-06-01-strip-club-fronts-drugs-and-diamond-smuggling-book-delves-inhttps:/www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-06-01-strip-club-fronts-drugs-and-diamond-smuggling-book-delves-into-bulgaria-and-sa-crime-links/to-bulgaria-and-sa-crime-links/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">‘Strip club fronts, drugs and diamond smuggling’ — book delves into Bulgaria and SA crime links</span></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It said while Bulgaria had an “oligarch mafia” to contend with, South Africa, while under the Jacob Zuma administration, had a government “skewed to promote and sustain a faction of the ANC at the expense of the country”.</span>\r\n<h4><b>The Skull, gambling and bribery</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Bulgarian saga, Geshev’s comments about “Russian influence” may have been a reference to Vasil </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bozhkov, also of Bulgaria and also known as The Skull, who appeared to be </span><a href=\"https://www.marica.bg/balgariq/obshtestvo/vasil-bojkov-se-vklyuchi-ot-dubay-s-komentar-za-geshev\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an opponent</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UK government, which </span><a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-sanctions-high-profile-bulgarian-figures-involved-in-corruption\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sanctioned Bozhkov in February this year</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, described him as “reportedly Bulgaria’s richest man, who made his fortune in the gambling industry” and “used bribery extensively to protect his business interests.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In June 2021 the United States’s Treasury Department announced it was </span><a href=\"https://home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/jy0208\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sanctioning individuals including Bozkhov</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whose name it spelt as Vassil Bojkov.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Influence over Bulgarian government </b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It referenced Russia and described Bozhkov as “a Bulgarian businessman and oligarch, [who] has bribed government officials on several occasions.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The US Treasury Department said: “Bojkov also planned to provide a sum of money to a former Bulgarian official and a Bulgarian politician earlier this year to help Bojkov create a channel for Russian political leaders to influence Bulgarian government officials.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of Kamenov, he was also allegedly involved in murky arenas involving government elements and was implicated in Bulgaria in the murder of an ex-cop.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The publication </span><a href=\"https://www.novinite.com/articles/220243/Wanted+by+Interpol+Bulgarian+Krasimir+Kamenov-Karo+and+his+Family+were+Murdered+in+South+Africa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Novinite reported</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last week that Kamenov was accused of being involved in the killing of former policeman Lyubomir Ivanov, who was fatally shot in Sofia in March last year.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other reports in Bulgari said that Ivanov had, more than a decade ago, been </span><a href=\"https://breaking.bg/novini/zastrelyaniyat-dnes-kraj-stolichen-mol-e-bivsh-policaj-razsledvan-za-korupciya-i-izdirvan-za-nelegalno-proizvodstvo-na-cigari/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arrested for corruption</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1707539\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/caryn.jpg\" alt=\"constantia killings\" width=\"720\" height=\"360\" /> <em>From left: Ruja Ignatova is one of the FBI’s top 10 wanted suspects. (Photo: Interpol website)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>Murdered or in hiding</b></h4>\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also reported that Kamenov may have had information about a former ally and his links to Ruja Ignatova, of Bulgaria, who is among the US </span><a href=\"https://www.fbi.gov/wanted/topten/ruja-ignatova\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Federal Bureau of Investigation’s top 10 wanted suspects</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She allegedly headed a global crypto scam that operated under various names, including OneCoin and OneLife.</span>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Krasimir Kamenov - <a href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/Karo?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Karo</a> killed in Capetown was our source for the police report stating that his former associate Christophoros Amanatidis <a href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/Taki?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Taki</a> ordered the murder of the <a href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/OneCoin?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#OneCoin</a> <a href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/cryptoqueen?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#cryptoqueen</a> <a href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/RujaIgnatova?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#RujaIgnatova</a> on a yacht in Ionian sea. He was about to say more to US investigators.</p>\r\n— birdbg (@birdbg2) <a href=\"https://twitter.com/birdbg2/status/1662063222730510336?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 26, 2023</a></blockquote>\r\n<script async src=\"https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"></script>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some reports, based on documents found in ex-cop Ivanov’s home following his assassination, suggested Ignatova was murdered in 2018 on a yacht in the Ionian Sea between Italy, Greece and Albania.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That was never officially confirmed.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ronald Shimko, a special agent with the FBI, in a 2019 statement about Ignatova’s brother Konstantin Ignatov, who later pleaded guilty to his role in the OneCoin saga, said she had stopped appearing online in 2017, which was unusual.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shimko believed Ignatova “grew concerned about possible prosecution and arrest, and took steps to avoid any such arrest.” </span><b>DM</b>",

"description": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A bomb blast and accusations about a State Capture-style conspiracy targeting elements of the Bulgarian government have ties to the murder suspect wanted there and who himself was killed in Cape Town last week.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In </span><a href=\"https://www.168chasa.bg/article/14012243\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">March</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and April this year, Bulgarian media reported that the country’s Prosecutor General, Ivan Geshev, and some of his colleagues, had alleged that </span><a href=\"https://www.segabg.com/hot/category-bulgaria/geshev-pusna-krasimir-kamenov-kuro-za-izdirvane-interpol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Krasimir Kamenov was involved in conspiring</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against him.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geshev, who has publicly said he has “information on… </span><a href=\"https://prb.bg/en/news/64771-prosecutor-general-ivan-geshev%3A-i-will-finish-my-mandate-no-matter-what-it-costs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trading in influence and political corruption</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,” reportedly detailed how criminal elements had ganged up against the parts of government going after crooks, roughly describing what is known in South Africa as </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-08-15-the-zondo-report-has-clearly-fingered-the-enablers-of-state-capture-now-its-time-for-reparations/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State Capture</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Publicised location</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 9 April a Bulgarian media outlet also reported that Kamenov had allegedly been involved in murders there </span><a href=\"https://novini247.com/novini/ukrivashtiyat-se-v-yuar-krasimir-kamenov-karo-e-porachal_6198881.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and was in South Africa</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The publishing of that detail meant that his location, in terms of the country he was in, was in the public domain.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from authorities, Kamenov’s enemies could therefore have been tipped off about his whereabouts.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the various allegations about him emerging in Bulgaria, he was, in a sense, a marked man.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kamenov was indeed in South Africa, as reported in Bulgaria — and on 25 May he, together with his wife, Gergana, and two others believed to be their employees, were </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-25-wanted-bulgarian-fugitive-believed-to-be-among-4-murdered-in-constantia/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found murdered</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a home in the upmarket Cape Town suburb of Constantia.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They had been shot.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this week </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported that the Embassy of Bulgaria said that on 6 April this year — </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-30-constantia-killings-bulgarias-forewarning-to-sa-and-a-global-billion-dollar-crypto-scam/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">49 days before Kamenov and the three others were assassinated</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> — it told South African authorities that he was in the country and that he faced arrest.</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1713437\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"720\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-1713437\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/ED_452555.jpg\" alt=\"Constantia killings\" width=\"720\" height=\"361\" /> <em>Crime scene experts process a multiple murder scene involving four foreign nationals in Constantia on 25 May, 2023 in Cape Town, South Africa. (Photo: Gallo Images/Brenton Geach)</em>[/caption]\r\n<h4><b>High-priority international suspect</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An </span><a href=\"https://www.interpol.int/en/How-we-work/Notices/View-Red-Notices#2023-20341\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interpol red notice</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> — an international request for authorities to arrest a listed figure — said Kamenov was wanted by Bulgaria in connection with a murder threat, murder and extortion.</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had also reported that, aside from being wanted over murder, Kamenov may also have had information about a $4-billion crypto fraud scheme involving a US-wanted suspect who may — or may not — have been killed.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Issues linked to his name also stretch in another direction, a political one, because of the alleged State Capture-style conspiracy that Bulgaria’s Geshev spoke about in April.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where matter takes another twist.</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1713435\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"720\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-1713435\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/ED_452560.jpg\" alt=\"Murder scene involving four foreign nationals in Constantia\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" /> <em>Crime scene experts process a multiple murder scene involving four foreign nationals in Constantia on May 25, 2023 in Cape Town, South Africa. (Photo: Gallo Images/Brenton Geach)</em>[/caption]\r\n<h4><b>‘Bomb intended to kill me’</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 1 May this year, weeks after Bulgarian media reported on Geshev’s comments about being targeted, </span><a href=\"https://apnews.com/article/bulgaria-chief-prosecutor-bomb-attack-e563bd9a3ed061ef68f9bd44b157f742\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an explosive device detonated</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> along a road near Sofia as Geshev’s convoy had driven by.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was not hurt.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bulgaria’s National Investigation Service head, Borislav Sarafov, </span><a href=\"https://apnews.com/article/bulgaria-chief-prosecutor-bomb-attack-e563bd9a3ed061ef68f9bd44b157f742\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">speaking to reporters</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, referred to the incident as “a terrorist act.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The European Public Protector’s Office issued </span><a href=\"https://www.eppo.europa.eu/en/news/statement-european-chief-prosecutor-attack-against-prosecutor-general-republic-bulgaria\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a statement</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> saying that “criminals who dare to target any member of the judiciary should be considered extremely dangerous and combatted with utmost determination.”</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://prb.bg/en/news/64664-statement-of-the-prosecutor-general-of-the-republic-of-bulgaria-ivan-geshev\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A statement by Geshev</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, published on the website of the Prosecutor’s Office of Bulgaria on 18 May, which happened to be a week before Kamenov was murdered, said: “I consider the bomb attack on me as an attempt intended to kill me.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, not everyone believed him.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.politico.eu/article/bomb-attack-bulgaria-prosecutor-staged-opposition/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Politico Europe reported</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that some thought the bomb attack may have been staged to derail attempts to hold him to account for not successfully cracking down on criminals who had infiltrated the state.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Staged attack suspicions</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It quoted Atanas Atanasov, co-chairman of the Democratic Bulgaria party, as saying the attack was clearly staged and: “This supposed assassination attempt has the main goal of thwarting the radical reform of the Prosecutor’s Office through glorification of the victim.”</span>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I missed this article by journalist Ivan Bakalov from May 2nd, but it sums up the latest developments quite well.</p>\r\n\"Why the bomb attack on Ivan Geshev is undoubtedly a PR stunt\"<a href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/Bulgaria?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Bulgaria</a> <a href=\"https://twitter.com/hashtag/MafiaState?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MafiaState</a> <a href=\"https://t.co/XXzc9UltxI\">https://t.co/XXzc9UltxI</a>\r\n\r\n— Dr Radosveta Vassileva (@radosveta_vass) <a href=\"https://twitter.com/radosveta_vass/status/1654767184088817665?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 6, 2023</a></blockquote>\r\n<script async src=\"https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"></script>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geshev, though, in his statement, was adamant he was targeted.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He said he had tackled domestic crime, including the murders of elderly people, and had tried to crack down on organised crime.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“We also continued with oligarchs, who everyone thought were untouchable, and now they are hiding in various destinations — </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-04-14-alleged-super-cartel-boss-freed-in-gupta-style-extradition-saga/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dubai</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Serbia, probably guarded by the Russians, paying lobbyists sums of 350,000 dollars and others,” he said.</span>\r\n<h4><b>‘Political mafia’ and ‘Russian influence’</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geshev added that cases of terrorism and “malicious Russian influence” were investigated.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“As a result, the prosecution was heavily attacked. The political mafia, the oligarchs, the criminals and all who want to continue stealing have united.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geshev also spoke of attempts to get him to resign.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“All of this shows that someone thinks I’m a flaw in the system and that I need to be rooted out so that the system can continue to function in the same way. The way that enables corruption and makes Bulgarian citizens live in poverty.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this journalist’s book, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/clash-of-the-cartels/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clash of the Cartels: Unmasking the global drug kingpins stalking South Africa</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a chapter focuses on Bulgaria.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The book details State Capture parallels between that country and South Africa.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick: </b><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-06-01-strip-club-fronts-drugs-and-diamond-smuggling-book-delves-inhttps:/www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-06-01-strip-club-fronts-drugs-and-diamond-smuggling-book-delves-into-bulgaria-and-sa-crime-links/to-bulgaria-and-sa-crime-links/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">‘Strip club fronts, drugs and diamond smuggling’ — book delves into Bulgaria and SA crime links</span></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It said while Bulgaria had an “oligarch mafia” to contend with, South Africa, while under the Jacob Zuma administration, had a government “skewed to promote and sustain a faction of the ANC at the expense of the country”.</span>\r\n<h4><b>The Skull, gambling and bribery</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Bulgarian saga, Geshev’s comments about “Russian influence” may have been a reference to Vasil </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bozhkov, also of Bulgaria and also known as The Skull, who appeared to be </span><a href=\"https://www.marica.bg/balgariq/obshtestvo/vasil-bojkov-se-vklyuchi-ot-dubay-s-komentar-za-geshev\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an opponent</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UK government, which </span><a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-sanctions-high-profile-bulgarian-figures-involved-in-corruption\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sanctioned Bozhkov in February this year</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, described him as “reportedly Bulgaria’s richest man, who made his fortune in the gambling industry” and “used bribery extensively to protect his business interests.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In June 2021 the United States’s Treasury Department announced it was </span><a href=\"https://home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/jy0208\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sanctioning individuals including Bozkhov</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whose name it spelt as Vassil Bojkov.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Influence over Bulgarian government </b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It referenced Russia and described Bozhkov as “a Bulgarian businessman and oligarch, [who] has bribed government officials on several occasions.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The US Treasury Department said: “Bojkov also planned to provide a sum of money to a former Bulgarian official and a Bulgarian politician earlier this year to help Bojkov create a channel for Russian political leaders to influence Bulgarian government officials.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of Kamenov, he was also allegedly involved in murky arenas involving government elements and was implicated in Bulgaria in the murder of an ex-cop.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The publication </span><a href=\"https://www.novinite.com/articles/220243/Wanted+by+Interpol+Bulgarian+Krasimir+Kamenov-Karo+and+his+Family+were+Murdered+in+South+Africa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Novinite reported</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last week that Kamenov was accused of being involved in the killing of former policeman Lyubomir Ivanov, who was fatally shot in Sofia in March last year.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other reports in Bulgari said that Ivanov had, more than a decade ago, been </span><a href=\"https://breaking.bg/novini/zastrelyaniyat-dnes-kraj-stolichen-mol-e-bivsh-policaj-razsledvan-za-korupciya-i-izdirvan-za-nelegalno-proizvodstvo-na-cigari/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arrested for corruption</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1707539\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"720\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-1707539\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/caryn.jpg\" alt=\"constantia killings\" width=\"720\" height=\"360\" /> <em>From left: Ruja Ignatova is one of the FBI’s top 10 wanted suspects.
