"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new UN report will be music to the ears of South Africa’s copper cable thieves. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With shortages looming for the red metal that is crucial to the green energy transition, the UN’s trade and development arm issued a </span><a href=\"https://unctad.org/system/files/official-document/ditcinf2025d2.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report this week </span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which noted that “copper scrap is fast becoming a strategic material”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Copper was the magnet for BHP last year when it was rebuffed in its bid to acquire Anglo American, and the metal is certain to trigger similar moves in the mining industry in the coming years. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Copper is central to the global transitions toward renewable energy and a digitally connected economy. Its unparalleled conductivity and versatility make it crucial for key industries such as construction, electronics, renewable energy, transportation, and defence,” the report reads.</span>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2709476\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/2025-05-07-15_36_25-Greenshot.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1720\" height=\"1195\" />\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“As demand rises — projected to increase by over 40% by 2040 — the global copper market faces mounting pressure from supply limitations, geopolitical uncertainties, increasing trade tensions and declining ore grades.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This emerging copper conundrum reflects a combination of geology and geopolitics. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 50% of the world’s known copper reserves are found in just five countries: Chile, Australia, Peru, DRC and Russia. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is worth pointing out on this front that two of the five — DRC and Russia — are basket cases, while Peru has been beset by political instability for the past decade. And political instability raises risks to supplies and the investment needed to get more copper out of the ground. </span>\r\n<h4><b>Surging demand</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grades are also declining and geologists are not finding any new El Dorados against the backdrop of surging demand.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Some projections suggest that the demand for copper in clean energy technologies alone could triple by 2040. Meeting this need would require more than 10 million tons of additional copper — almost half the total global supply in 2023,” the report says. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“To stay on track for net-zero emissions by 2030, the world may need to develop approximately 80 new copper mines, requiring up to $250-billion in investments.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if it can’t be mined, it can be recycled — and copper is a recycler’s dream. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“The projected shortfall in copper supply to meet growing global demand underscores the need for sustainable alternatives with lower environmental impact. One promising solution is copper recycling, which preserves the metal’s physical and chemical properties without degradation,” the report reads. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And a lot less energy goes into recycling than mining, meaning lower emissions of the greenhouse gases linked to climate change. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Citing the International Copper Study Group, the report says that a third of global copper use in 2023 was derived from recycled sources. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is why if copper is regarded as both a “green metal” and a “strategic” one, then scrap copper is on its way to becoming classified as a “strategic material”. </span>\r\n<div style=\"background-color: #f5f5f5; border-left: 5px solid #ccc; padding: 16px; margin: 20px 0; border-radius: 6px;\">\r\n<h3 style=\"margin-top: 0;\">What this means for you</h3>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Copper products look set to surge in price in the coming years, and that will have a direct impact on your pocket because whether you realise it or not, many of the things you consume require copper.</span>\r\n\r\n</div>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Industries in South Africa that have long been plagued by copper cable theft have probably already reached that conclusion.
