"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An explosive device fitted beneath a vehicle detonated in Israel roughly 19 years ago – five people were injured yet somehow survived.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In that same period, a second similar device targeting the same victim was placed on top of a vehicle. Three people were injured.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those double blasts nearly two decades ago in Israel have now contributed to a string of arrests carried out at a home in Bryanston, Johannesburg, on Thursday, 17 November.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The latest arrests come after another Israeli crime suspect, Yossi Moslie (also spelled Mosli and Mosley), was reportedly arrested in August while in his home country on a visit there from South Africa.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jerusalem Post</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> report at the time said: “Mosley is suspected of </span><a href=\"https://www.jpost.com/israel-news/article-715171\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trying to blackmail Jewish businessmen living in South Africa</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who specialise in the field of cryptocurrency.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claims were also made about a stun grenade being used on a target.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/_dsc5238/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1467686\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/DSC5238.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" /></a> Police prepare to transport a 46-year-old Israeli fugitive in Bryanston, Johannesburg, who has been on Interpol’s red notice since 2015. (Photo: Shiraaz Mohamed)</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In another article relating to a murder and attempted murder case, the publication quoted Moslie as saying: “</span><a href=\"https://www.jpost.com/breaking-news/article-714438\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It’s all conspiracies</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I have no conflict with anyone.”</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> repeatedly asked the South African Police Service (SAPS) about the Moslie case in August and September 2022 but received no response.</span>\r\n<h4>From Israel to around the world</h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cases in Israel and South Africa point to organised crime extending from the former to the latter and further afield.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the latest crackdown on Thursday, national police spokesperson Colonel Athlenda Mathe confirmed the arrest of a suspected Israeli gang leader, who was also a wanted fugitive, and seven others.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She said the suspected leader was “attached to a criminal organisation in Israel called the ‘Abergil Organisation’”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the start of July 2022 the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project published an article saying that Yitzhak “Itzik” Abergil, who headed the “so-called Abergil crime family”, was sentenced in Israel to </span><a href=\"https://www.occrp.org/en/daily/16521-major-israeli-crime-boss-sentenced-to-more-than-three-lifetimes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three life terms plus 15 years in jail for drug trafficking and murder</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a 2012 statement by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), a suspect named Itzhak Abergil (it was not immediately clear if this was the same person sentenced in Israel in 2022) “was the leader of the Abergil crime family and used the power and influence of the Abergil family to conduct </span><a href=\"https://archives.fbi.gov/archives/losangeles/press-releases/2012/israeli-organized-crime-figure-pleads-guilty-in-u.s.-to-narcotics-and-racketeering-offenses-including-murder\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">criminal activities in Israel and around the world</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">”.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/_dsc5109/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1467681\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/DSC5109.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" /></a> Police prepare to load seized motorcycles and vehicles in Bryanston, Johannesburg, following the arrest of a 46-year-old Israeli fugitive on 17 November 2022. (Photo: Shiraaz Mohamed)</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Thursday, Mathe said the suspected Israeli gang kingpin arrested in Bryanston and allegedly linked to the Abergil group “has been on </span><a href=\"https://www.interpol.int/en/How-we-work/Notices/View-Red-Notices\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interpol’s Red Notice</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from 2015”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A red notice is an international request for authorities to arrest a listed figure pending their extradition or surrender.</span>\r\n<h4>Drugs, bomb blasts and assault rifles</h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mathe said the alleged kingpin as “a wanted suspect in Israel for conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“According to Israeli authorities, the suspect is part of a notorious gang dealing in drug trafficking, extortion and other criminal activities.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conspiracy and attempted murder charges related to the two bomb blasts carried out in Israel in 2003 and 2004.</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read in </span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: “</span></i><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-11-01-crackdown-suspected-global-cocaine-smugglers-arrested-in-sa-in-joint-us-australia-underworld-hack-swoop/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crackdown — Suspected global cocaine smugglers arrested in SA in joint US-Australia ‘underworld hack’ swoop</span></i></a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">”</span></i>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“In 2003 and 2004, this wanted suspect allegedly placed an explosive bomb underneath a vehicle of a man in Israel in two separate incidents. As a result of the first explosion, five people sustained serious injuries but all miraculously survived.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“In the second incident, the suspect also attempted to do the same with the same victim, where he placed a bomb on top of a vehicle. I have no conflict with anyone.”</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> repeatedly asked the South African Police Service (SAPS) about the Moslie case in August and September 2022 but received no response.</span>\r\n<h4>From Israel to around the world</h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cases in Israel and South Africa point to organised crime extending from the former to the latter and further afield.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the latest crackdown on Thursday, national police spokesperson Colonel Athlenda Mathe confirmed the arrest of a suspected Israeli gang leader, who was also a wanted fugitive, and seven others.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She said the suspected leader was “attached to a criminal organisation in Israel called the ‘Abergil Organisation’”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the start of July 2022 the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project published an article saying that Yitzhak “Itzik” Abergil, who headed the “so-called Abergil crime family”, was sentenced in Israel to </span><a href=\"https://www.occrp.org/en/daily/16521-major-israeli-crime-boss-sentenced-to-more-than-three-lifetimes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three life terms plus 15 years in jail for drug trafficking and murder</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a 2012 statement by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), a suspect named Itzhak Abergil (it was not immediately clear if this was the same person sentenced in Israel in 2022) “was the leader of the Abergil crime family and used the power and influence of the Abergil family to conduct </span><a href=\"https://archives.fbi.gov/archives/losangeles/press-releases/2012/israeli-organized-crime-figure-pleads-guilty-in-u.s.-to-narcotics-and-racketeering-offenses-including-murder\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">criminal activities in Israel and around the world</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">”.</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1467681\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"720\"]<a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/_dsc5109/\"><img class=\"size-full wp-image-1467681\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/DSC5109.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" /></a> Police prepare to load seized motorcycles and vehicles in Bryanston, Johannesburg, following the arrest of a 46-year-old Israeli fugitive on 17 November 2022. (Photo: Shiraaz Mohamed)[/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Thursday, Mathe said the suspected Israeli gang kingpin arrested in Bryanston and allegedly linked to the Abergil group “has been on </span><a href=\"https://www.interpol.int/en/How-we-work/Notices/View-Red-Notices\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interpol’s Red Notice</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from 2015”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A red notice is an international request for authorities to arrest a listed figure pending their extradition or surrender.</span>\r\n<h4>Drugs, bomb blasts and assault rifles</h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mathe said the alleged kingpin as “a wanted suspect in Israel for conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“According to Israeli authorities, the suspect is part of a notorious gang dealing in drug trafficking, extortion and other criminal activities.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conspiracy and attempted murder charges related to the two bomb blasts carried out in Israel in 2003 and 2004.</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read in </span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: “</span></i><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-11-01-crackdown-suspected-global-cocaine-smugglers-arrested-in-sa-in-joint-us-australia-underworld-hack-swoop/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crackdown — Suspected global cocaine smugglers arrested in SA in joint US-Australia ‘underworld hack’ swoop</span></i></a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">”</span></i>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“In 2003 and 2004, this wanted suspect allegedly placed an explosive bomb underneath a vehicle of a man in Israel in two separate incidents. As a result of the first explosion, five people sustained serious injuries but all miraculously survived.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“In the second incident, the suspect also attempted to do the same with the same victim, where he placed a bomb on top of a vehicle.
