"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-03-06-as-first-coronavirus-case-confirmed-south-africa-told-to-keep-calm/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first confirmed case</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Covid-19 in South Africa, the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) released a statement saying most medical health insurance providers would pay for tests for the </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-03-09-science-headlines-and-impact-living-in-times-of-coronavirus/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">novel coronavirus</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.discovery.co.za/corporate/covid19-extended-benefits-across-health-insurance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discovery Health</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, </span><a href=\"https://client.momentum.co.za/for/business/media/coronavirus-momentum-provides-support\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Momentum Health</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, </span><a href=\"https://profmed.co.za/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Profmed</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, </span><a href=\"https://www.fedhealth.co.za/medical-aid-questions/coronavirus-faqs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fedhealth</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and </span><a href=\"https://www.gems.gov.za/-/media/GemsWeb/Media-release/Media-Statement-Coronavirus_Final.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GEMS</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, have all indicated their members would be covered for coronavirus testing.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Confirmed</b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cases of Covid-19 are covered for:</span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Diagnostic testing;</span></li>\r\n \t<li>Consultations; and</span></li>\r\n \t<li>Defined supportive treatment and medicines</span></li>\r\n</ul>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is important to note that full coverage will only be implemented should you test </span><b>positive </b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the virus. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Testing and treatment will not come out of your medical savings account. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the test comes back negative and you do not have the virus, then the cost will come from your medical savings. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Private testing can be expensive. Currently, Lancet is the only lab offering private Covid-19 testing, for an estimated R1,431. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CMS recommends that all testing for the coronavirus be referred to state laboratories and not private labs, as advised by the Department of Health.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discovery Health has launched the </span><a href=\"https://www.discovery.co.za/assets/discoverycoza/medical-aid/guide-to-global-emergency-benefit.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WHO Global Outbreak Benefit</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for all of its health plans.</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The benefit ensures members have access to the out-of-hospital management and appropriate supportive treatment which meet the scheme’s clinical protocols and entry criteria. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the virus progresses, it may result in various complications, such as pneumonia and respiratory failure. Should this happen, it becomes treated as a Prescribed Minimum Benefit (PMB).</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PMBs are a set of defined benefits to ensure that all medical scheme members have access to certain minimum health services, regardless of the benefit option they have selected. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PMBs are a feature of the Medical Schemes Act of 1998, and medical schemes have to cover the costs related to the diagnosis, treatment and care.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a recent </span><a href=\"https://www.medicalschemes.com/files/Press%20Releases/PressRelease3of2020.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statement</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Dr Sipho Kabane, the chief executive and registrar of CMS, said that “all medical schemes are required by law to pay for the diagnosis, treatment and care costs of PMB conditions in full, irrespective of plan type or option. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“They are not allowed to fund PMB conditions from a member’s Medical Savings Account, as this is not in line with the PMB Regulations.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the CMS, if you have an uncomplicated infection with no PMB-eligible conditions, then the medical scheme may fund all health care costs as per scheme rules.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because individuals can spread the virus without showing any symptoms, Kabane said that “we [the CMS] encourage all who have travelled to areas with confirmed cases, or have come into close contact with someone who has travelled, and thereafter experience flu-like symptoms and a fever, to seek immediate medical attention.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medical scheme members are encouraged to contact their medical schemes on their benefit option entitlements if they experience flu-like symptoms. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are showing symptoms such as a cough, fever or have difficulty breathing, arrange for a virtual or telephonic consultation with your healthcare provider. </span><b>MC</b>",
