It’s just being greedy. On Wednesday, South Africa climbed to fourth on the overall medals tally with a total of 26 at the time of writing.</span></span></p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0.3cm; margin-bottom: 0cm; \"><span style=\" \"><span >South Africa’s first real medal chance came around noon. Sunette Viljoen – a two time Commonwealth Games gold medallist and silver medallist at the Rio Olympics Games – had to settle for bronze.</span></span></p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0.3cm; margin-bottom: 0cm; \"><span style=\" \"><span >Viljoen was placed in second for most of the <g class=\"gr_ gr_97 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-del replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"97\" data-gr-id=\"97\">event,</g> but was pipped by Australia's Kelsey-Lee Roberts putting a monster effort on her final attempt. Another Aussie, Kathryn Mitchell, took gold with a new Commonwealth Games record. </span></span></p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0.3cm; margin-bottom: 0cm; \"><span style=\" \"><span >Still, Viljoen has been exemplary for South African sport and even if this is her final Games, there is no reason to be disappointed.</span></span></p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0.3cm; margin-bottom: 0cm; \"><span style=\" \"><span >Reinhardt Hamman also added a bronze in the men's F38 shot put, but the night belonged to the country’s long jump pair with <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2018-04-11-cwg2018-manyonga-redefines-his-legacy-again-with-gold/#.Ws4HuIiuw2w\" target=\"_self\">Luvo Manyonga taking gold</a> – twice breaking the Commonwealth Games record – and Ruswahl Samaai taking bronze.</span></span></p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0.3cm; margin-bottom: 0cm; \"><span style=\" \"><span >Princess Schreuder and Philippus Walker also added a silver in the lawn bowls mixed B2/B3, losing to Australia in the gold medal match.</span></span></p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0.3cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span ><span ><span ><span ><span >Elsewhere, the South African netball team notched up their second win in two days, beating Barbados 85-25, with good results in lawn bowls and shooting, too. The South African had a false start, being too quick out of the blocks and while he avoided disqualification for the semis, it appeared as if though he was retrospectively booted out - after the results on the official Games website showed him as DQ in the semis and did not list him as a starter for the finals.
