In 2019, he was re-elected for a second term.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The end of Mpofu’s stint on the JSC comes after the controversial lawyer was roundly criticised by civil society and the </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-02-08-calls-for-dali-mpofu-to-be-removed-from-judicial-service-commission-following-chief-justice-interviews/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pretoria Society of Advocates</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for his conduct during the Chief Justice interviews last month.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During Judge Mandisa Maya’s interview, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-02-05-jsc-interviews-for-next-chief-justice-were-farcical-thanks-to-mpofu-and-malema/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mpofu</span></a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said that he and the judge had once “spent a night together”... studying, he then clarified.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marc Leathern, chairperson of the Pretoria Society of Advocates, described Mpofu’s conduct as “sexist and condescending”. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commenting on Mpofu asking Judge Dunstan Mlambo about allegations of sexual harassment, Leathern wrote</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Mpofu </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">descended into a character assassination where the judge president was, without prior warning, confronted with the allegation of a rumour that he was guilty of the sexual harassment of female aspiring acting judges”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amid the backlash against Mpofu for his conduct, the only support he received was from a group of black advocates that included </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muzi Sikhakhane, known for being in Jacob Zuma’s corner in various cases. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response to </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adriaan Basson — the editor-in-chief at </span><a href=\"https://www.news24.com/news24/columnists/adriaanbasson/adriaan-basson-dali-mpofu-a-legal-nincompoop-and-scoundrel-20220207\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">News24</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> — calling Mpofu </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“a scoundrel, immoral and a nincompoop”, the group accused the journalist of resorting to “gratuitous insults and slurs, whose roots are clearly what he inherits from his colonial heritage”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A week after the Chief Justice interviews, the General Council of the Bar of South Africa said it had been inundated with objections to the conduct displayed during the interviews, particularly that of Mpofu towards</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> judges Dunstan Mlambo and Raymond Zondo, as well as his inappropri</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ate comments directed at Maya. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It said it had been requested by a number of constituent bars and individual members to seek the replacement of Mpofu on the JSC and was in discussions with AFT to that end.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the time, </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">News24 </span></i><a href=\"https://www.news24.com/news24/southafrica/news/calls-for-mpofus-removal-from-jsc-academic-as-his-term-is-over-advocates-for-transformation-20220210\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the AFT said calls for Mpofu’s removal were “unfair” as his term had already ended.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mpofu, who was one of 23 commissioners, was appointed to the JSC by the General Council of the Bar. </span><b>DM</b>",

"description": "Dali Mpofu is a South African lawyer, politician, and former businessman. He was the National Chairperson of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) from 2014 to 2019.\r\n\r\nHe served on the Judicial Service Commission from 2017 to 2022 and formerly served as chief executive officer of the South African Broadcasting Corporation from 2005 to 2009.\r\n\r\nMpofu was born in East London, Eastern Cape, South Africa, in 1962. He served in this position until 2019, when he was replaced by Floyd Shivambu.\r\n\r\nDali Mpofu is a controversial figure. He has been criticized for his handling of a Section 189 hearing as the representative of the suspended Public Protector, Busisiwe Mkhwebane. He has drawn criticism for his outspoken views on a range of issues.\r\n\r\nHowever, he is also a respected lawyer and politician. He is a skilled advocate and a formidable debater.\r\n\r\nMpofu is married to Mpumi Nxumalo. They have four children.",
