"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David Teeger has been stripped of the SA Under-19 captaincy by Cricket South Africa (CSA) a mere week before the Under-19 World Cup is set to commence at JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Late last year, Teeger endured an inquiry by CSA regarding comments he made</span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-11-26-inquiry-to-investigate-sa-under-19-cricket-captains-pro-israel-comments-at-awards-ceremony/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">concerning Israeli soldiers</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He was</span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-12-06-sa-under-19-cricket-captain-david-teeger-cleared-of-any-wrongdoing-over-israel-comments/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cleared of any wrongdoing</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the independent inquiry headed by Advocate Wim Trengove SC and was officially announced as captain a few days later in December.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CSA have now backtracked, stating that Teeger continuing as captain of the junior national team poses a security risk to the tournament.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“As is the case with all such events, CSA has been receiving regular security and risk updates regarding the World Cup,” a CSA statement read.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“We have been advised that protests related to the war in Gaza can be anticipated at the venues for the tournament. </span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2011490\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/TL_2160099.jpg\" alt=\"David Teeger\" width=\"720\" height=\"456\" /> <em>David Teeger of South Africa during the Men's U19 Tri-Series. The Palestinians were displaced from their homes, and many became refugees. Since then, there have been numerous wars and conflicts between Israel and Palestine, and the Palestinians have continued to seek a state of their own.</p>\r\n<p data-sourcepos=\"5:1-5:237\">Gaza is a Palestinian coastal enclave that is bordered by Israel and Egypt. Hamas is a Palestinian Islamist militant group that has controlled Gaza since 2006. Hamas is considered a terrorist organisation by Israel and the United States.</p>\r\n<p data-sourcepos=\"7:1-7:333\">The current Middle East conflict between Israel and Palestine began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel. Hamas fired rockets into Israel and stormed southern Israeli cities and towns across the border of the Gaza strip. The attack killed and injured hundreds of soldiers and civilians and took dozens of hostages.</p>\r\n<p data-sourcepos=\"9:1-9:227\">The attack took Israel by surprise, though the state quickly mounted a deadly retaliatory operation. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) launched airstrikes against Hamas targets in Gaza. The IDF also sent ground troops into Gaza.</p>\r\n<p data-sourcepos=\"11:1-11:218\">The conflict has been devastating for both sides. Thousands have died or have been injured.</p>\r\n<p data-sourcepos=\"13:1-13:238\">The conflict has also had a devastating impact on the infrastructure in Gaza. The IDF has destroyed hospitals, schools, and power plants. The United Nations estimates that more than 72,000 Palestinians have been displaced by the fighting.</p>\r\n<p data-sourcepos=\"15:1-15:261\">The international community has called for a cease-fire between Israel and Palestine to end the latest crisis in the Middle East. However, both sides have so far refused to agree to a cease-fire. The conflict is likely to continue for some time, and the humanitarian situation in Gaza is likely to worsen.</p>",
