They would be competing to see who could raise the most awareness for a cause connected to health, education or the environment. Winning teams were to advance to the </span><a href=\"https://www.g20.org/rome-summit.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">G20 Summit in Rome</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to get world leaders on board.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Critics panned the show without seeing any footage. Many said the premise embodied </span><a href=\"https://www.thedailybeast.com/what-did-we-do-to-deserve-a-celebrity-activist-competition-show\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">performative activism</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, </span><a href=\"https://i-d.vice.com/en_uk/article/wx59v5/the-activist-tv-show\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">devalued grassroots activism</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and was </span><a href=\"https://www.buzzfeed.com/ryanschocket2/usher-priyanka-julianne-the-activist-show-backlash\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cringeworthy</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Sept. 15, 2021, less than a week after announcing the five-part series, the network and its two co-producers admitted that the concept was flawed. They said they had canceled it and would </span><a href=\"https://variety.com/2021/tv/news/activist-series-reconfigured-apology-cbs-global-citizen-live-nation-1235065908/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">turn the show into a documentary</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It isn’t clear yet what role the celebrity hosts – </span><a href=\"https://www.looktothestars.org/celebrity/usher\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usher</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who founded </span><a href=\"https://ushersnewlook.org/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a nonprofit</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that supports under-resourced teens in 1999; </span><a href=\"https://www.looktothestars.org/celebrity/priyanka-chopra\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Priyanka Chopra</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a </span><a href=\"https://www.unicef.org/india/our-partners/celebrities/priyanka-chopra\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNICEF ambassador</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; and </span><a href=\"https://www.looktothestars.org/celebrity/julianne-hough\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Julianne Hough</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who has helped </span><a href=\"https://www.looktothestars.org/news/16475-julianne-hough-empowers-women-to-get-in-the-know-about-endometriosis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">raise awareness about endometriosis</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> – will play in the documentary.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chopra and Hough immediately felt the need to </span><a href=\"https://www.bbc.com/news/newsbeat-58587699\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">apologize to their fans</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and </span><a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/p/CT0SRywB-5-/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">voice their concerns</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Usher has not spoken out.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That a major broadcaster would expect a show linking celebrities and activism to garner viewers and that the concept would implode didn’t surprise us. We </span><a href=\"https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=9Qf8BVUAAAAJ&hl=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> what happens when </span><a href=\"https://www.upress.umn.edu/book-division/books/batman-saves-the-congo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">celebrities get involved in activism</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in tandem with corporations. </span><a href=\"https://www.cbs.dk/en/research/departments-and-centres/department-of-management-society-and-communication/staff/lrimsc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quite often we find</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that while celebrities may be well-intentioned in their efforts, the machinery behind their activism may undermine the causes it purports to support.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Enticing the public</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starbucks, TOMS shoes and other companies often try to turn compassion for suffering strangers, from Congolese farmers to Peruvian kids, into a commodity. Celebrities are brought in as spokespeople to </span><a href=\"https://www.fashionroundtable.co.uk/news/2021/4/20/greenwashing-how-brands-use-influencers-and-celebrities-to-market-sustainable-initiativesnbsp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">widen the appeal</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of </span><a href=\"https://www.cipd.co.uk/knowledge/strategy/corporate-responsibility/factsheet#gref\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">corporate responsibility</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> efforts and sell more products.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be sure, we find that some celebrities, including </span><a href=\"https://gardencollage.com/change/climate-change/celebrities-care-environment-want-know/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meryl Streep</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and </span><a href=\"https://borgenproject.org/tag/angelina-jolie/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angelina Jolie</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are more serious about leveraging their influence burnished through their professions. However, we often see that many celebrities don’t invest enough time and energy to gain the </span><a href=\"https://www.taylorfrancis.com/chapters/edit/10.4324/9781315619835-28/world-stage-trevor-thrall-dominik-stecula\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">credibility and expertise</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> required to make a difference.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celebrities have engaged in this high-profile advocacy for decades. Movie stars like </span><a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1080/14791420.2011.637055\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Audrey Hepburn</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were performing public roles in the mid-20th century as good Samaritans. Because of their fame, celebrities can entice regular people, along with politicians, wealthy philanthropists and corporations, to embrace a cause.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fans eagerly lap up news about celebrity accomplishments as well as about their private lives and charitable inclinations. Because familiar faces can shine the spotlight on their pet causes, </span><a href=\"https://www.routledge.com/Celebrity-Advocacy-and-International-Development/Brockington/p/book/9780415707213\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">humanitarian agencies and non-governmental organizations often tap celebrities</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to draw attention to advocacy campaigns.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, the United Nations enlists hundreds of celebrities as </span><a href=\"https://www.un.org/en/messengers-peace/page/about-messengers-peace\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">messengers of peace, goodwill ambassadors and advocates</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to communicate with the public. The ENOUGH Project promotes </span><a href=\"https://enoughproject.org/upstanders/celebrity/luol-deng\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NBA star Luol Deng</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the model </span><a href=\"https://enoughproject.org/upstanders/celebrity/iman\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iman</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other famous people as what it calls “</span><a href=\"https://enoughproject.org/upstanders/celebrity\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">celebrity upstanders</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">” to raise awareness of crises in Africa and support efforts to quell conflicts there.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likewise, corporations get celebrities to promote </span><a href=\"https://www.upress.umn.edu/book-division/books/brand-aid\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cause-related product lines</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as </span><a href=\"https://www.red.org/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Red)</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a project which has worked with Elton John, Scarlett Johansson and Gisele Bündchen to raise money, initially to fight HIV/AIDS and now also to deal with COVID-19 in </span><a href=\"https://www.red.org/how-red-works\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">African countries</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https://www.youtube.com/embed/k3H_UcwvzCw\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"></iframe>\r\n\r\n<b>The risks of celebrity activism</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether the goal is slowing climate change, fighting bigotry or improving access to health care, when celebrities engage in activism, excitement over the celebrities can overwhelm the activism.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The </span><a href=\"https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2017/10/why-couldnt-the-save-darfur-movement-stop-the-killing-in-sudan.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Save Darfur campaign</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which at its height brought together more than 190 religious, political and human rights organizations, is a good example.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The campaign eventually collapsed. And yet the </span><a href=\"https://www.crisisgroup.org/africa/horn-africa/sudan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people of Darfur today are still in crisis</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite research showing that celebrities </span><a href=\"https://www.routledge.com/Celebrity-Advocacy-and-International-Development/Brockington/p/book/9780415707213\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">catch but fail to hold our attention</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, humanitarian agencies and nonprofits like UNICEF and Oxfam International compete to secure celebrity ambassadors.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we interviewed aid workers in the field, we learned that visits to crisis zones and refugee camps by celebrities can be extremely disruptive to humanitarian operations. Without the stage management of celebrity ambassadors and control over their media appearances, it’s hard to avoid </span><a href=\"https://www.theguardian.com/global-development-professionals-network/2015/jun/30/secret-aid-worker-celebrities-angelina-jolie\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gaffes that risk becoming debacles</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. One example: actress </span><a href=\"https://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/feb/19/downton-abbey-elizabeth-mcgovern-celebrity-disaster-relief\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elizabeth McGovern</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mixed up Dakar, the capital of Senegal, and Darfur when she went to Sierra Leone with World Vision as its “ambassador.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those mistakes that occur and the hassles that arise when famous people show up can </span><a href=\"http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/1367877914528532\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defeat the purpose of celebrity engagement</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But since these celebrities often come with corporate sponsors – meaning cash – aid workers and local people put up with them.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Celebrity activism as an industry</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As demand for star power surges, the machinery behind celebrity activism has become more corporate and professional, we explain in our new book, “</span><a href=\"https://www.upress.umn.edu/book-division/books/batman-saves-the-congo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Batman Saves the Congo</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, most major charitable organizations have </span><a href=\"https://celebrityanddevelopment.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/third-world-quaterly-2014.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">full-time celebrity liaisons</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to manage dozens of celebrity supporters. There are philanthropic consultants, like the </span><a href=\"http://www.globalphilanthropy.com/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global Philanthropy Group</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which help celebrity clients </span><a href=\"https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2012/jul/29/when-celebrities-become-philanthropists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">find causes to represent</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have tracked dozens of celebrities who have </span><a href=\"https://www.elitedaily.com/p/these-celebrity-backed-charitable-foundations-are-doing-so-much-good-22972563\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their own nonprofits</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, suggesting </span><a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1080/01436597.2017.1322465\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-term commitments</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But these organizations are sometimes founded on shaky premises that ignore local needs and can benefit the celebrity more than the cause.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider Ben Affleck’s </span><a href=\"https://www.easterncongo.org/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eastern Congo Initiative</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We looked at how, in </span><a href=\"https://www.usaid.gov/news-information/frontlines/may-june-2016/drc-coffee-might-be-served-starbucks-near-you\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">partnership with Starbucks</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it claimed to transform the coffee sector in Congo to advance peace and development. Unfortunately, the initiative had no expertise in coffee production and little knowledge of rural development.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite professing to serve up a “</span><a href=\"https://stories.starbucks.com/emea/stories/2016/starbucks-eastern-congo-lake-kivu/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cup of hope</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,” research later showed that this collaboration </span><a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.worlddev.2020.105193\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">made hardly any difference for the farmers it was supposed to help</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, it was Affleck’s search for meaning in his own life, aided by </span><a href=\"https://www.williamsworks.com/our-story\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highly paid consultants</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that led him to start this organization, not the Congolese.</span>\r\n\r\n<iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https://www.youtube.com/embed/IcloAVusC9Y\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"></iframe>\r\n\r\n<b>Celebrities and consumer activism</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many celebrity-led organizations include corporate partnerships in the form of cause-related marketing lines. Now would-be activists are encouraged to “shop to support” Damon’s water.org by buying a </span><a href=\"https://water.org/stellaartois/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stella Artois Limited Edition chalice</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or, to sustain Christy Turlington Burns’ Every Mother Counts, you can “</span><a href=\"https://everymothercounts.org/what-can-i-do/gifts/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shop gifts that make a difference</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">” and purchase </span><a href=\"https://stephaniefreidperenchio.com/orange-rose/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a Stephanie Freid-Perenchio Orange Rose Necklace</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For celebrities to promote splurging as activism risks distorting how causes can be addressed more successfully through collective action, grassroots engagement and direct donations.</span>\r\n\r\n<iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https://www.youtube.com/embed/-5hsLsBIzB0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"></iframe>\r\n\r\n<b>A boon for the rich and famous</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without any accountability, </span><a href=\"https://www.routledge.com/Celebrity-Humanitarianism-and-North-South-Relations-Politics-place-and/Richey/p/book/9781138854284\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we have seen these efforts generally do little</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help the causes or beneficiaries they are championing.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After studying this pattern for years, we want to know: What does celebrity activism accomplish?</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It makes an impact, but not in the ways you might expect. We’ve observed that getting celebrities to back a cause may bring greater visibility for the celebrity and profits for corporate partners.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celebrity activism can soften or rehabilitate a celebrity’s reputation, as in the case of </span><a href=\"https://www.routledge.com/Celebrity-Humanitarianism-The-Ideology-of-Global-Charity/Kapoor/p/book/9780415783392\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Madonna and Jolie</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can also lead to </span><a href=\"http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/4651309.stm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher album sales</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or more downloads. That’s what happened for many performers, including British rock band </span><a href=\"https://www.forestgoldradio.com/live8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pink Floyd</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the pop singer </span><a href=\"https://www.nme.com/news/music/live-8-3-1365228\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robbie Williams</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after the Live 8 concerts. The point of those widely televised </span><a href=\"https://web.archive.org/web/20160323203946/http://live8live.com/whathappened/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">concerts, held at venues across the world in 2005</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was to increase </span><a href=\"https://www.oecd-ilibrary.org/sites/5e331623-en/index.html?itemId=/content/component/5e331623-en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aid to low-income countries</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even as a canceled TV show, “The Activist,” is destined to spotlight the unaccountable power stars possess, far more than the causes than it’s supposed to be about. </span><b>DM/ML <iframe src=\"https://counter.theconversation.com/content/168025/count.gif?distributor=republish-lightbox-advanced\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\"></iframe>\r\n</b>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alexandra Budabin is a senior researcher of human rights at the University of Dayton.
