"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Justice Arthur Engoron also banned Trump from serving as an officer or director of any New York corporation for three years.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engoron cancelled his prior ruling from September ordering the \"dissolution\" of companies that control pillars of Trump's real estate empire, saying on Friday that this was no longer necessary because he is appointing an independent monitor and compliance director to oversee Trump's businesses.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the ruling, Engoron wrote that Trump and the other defendants in the case \"are incapable of admitting the error of their ways.\"</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"Their complete lack of contrition and remorse borders on pathological,\" Engoron wrote. \"Instead, they adopt a 'See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil' posture that the evidence belies.\"</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lawsuit brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James accused Trump and his family businesses of overstating his net worth by as much $3.6 billion a year over a decade to fool bankers into giving him better loan terms.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trump's lawyer Alina Habba said in a statement that the ruling was a \"manifest injustice\" and \"culmination of a multi-year, politically fueled witch hunt\" against him.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"This is not just about Donald Trump - if this decision stands, it will serve as a signal to every single American that New York is no longer open for business,\" Habba said, adding that she plans to appeal.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trump and his adult sons, Don Jr. and Eric, were defendants in the case. Don Jr. and Eric Trump were each ordered by the judge to pay $4 million.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trump has denied wrongdoing and called the case a political vendetta by James, an elected Democrat.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The </span><a href=\"https://www.reutersconnect.com/all?search=all%3AL1N3E001J&linkedFromStory=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">civil fraud case</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could deal a major blow to Trump's real estate empire as the businessman turned politician leads the race for the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic President </span><a href=\"https://www.reuters.com/topic/person/joe-biden/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joe Biden</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the </span><a href=\"https://www.reuters.com/topic/event/us-elections/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nov. 5 U.S. election</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During defiant and meandering trial testimony in November, Trump conceded that some of his property values were inaccurate but insisted banks were obligated to do their own due diligence.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engoron criticized Trump for his behaviour during his trial testimony - and wrote that the testimony hurt his cause.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"Donald Trump rarely responded to the questions asked, and he frequently interjected long, irrelevant speeches on issues far beyond the scope of the trial,\" the judge wrote. \"His refusal to answer the questions directly, or in some cases, at all, severely compromised his credibility.\"</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trump could be required to deposit his portion of the full judgment plus interest during an appeal, which is standard practice in similar cases.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trump could also post a smaller amount with collateral and interest by securing a type of loan called an appeal bond. But he may have trouble finding a willing lender after Engoron found he lied to banks about his wealth.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is unclear how much access to cash Trump has, and estimates of his fortune vary, with Forbes pegging his net worth at $2.6 billion. Trump testified in an April deposition that he had roughly $400 million in cash.</span>\r\n\r\n<strong>Contentious Trial</strong>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Friday's ruling came after a </span><a href=\"https://www.reutersconnect.com/all?search=all%3AL1N3D72AA&linkedFromStory=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contentious three-month trial</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Manhattan. The case was decided by the judge without a jury.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trump used his occasional court appearances as impromptu campaign stops, delivering incendiary remarks to reporters and insisting his enemies are using the courts to prevent him from retaking the White House.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trump is leading by a wide margin in the race for the Republican nomination despite a host of other legal troubles.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He is under indictment in four criminal cases, including one in New York related to hush money payments he made to a porn star ahead of the 2016 election. The judge overseeing that case on Thursday set a </span><a href=\"https://www.reutersconnect.com/all?search=all%3AL2N3F01H8&linkedFromStory=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">March 25 trial date</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over the objections of Trump's lawyers, who sought to delay it due to Trump's crowded legal and political schedule.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trump has also been charged </span><a href=\"https://www.reutersconnect.com/all?search=all%3AL1N38420H&linkedFromStory=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Florida</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for his handling of classified documents upon leaving office and </span><a href=\"https://www.reutersconnect.com/all?search=all%3AL2N3F03TN&linkedFromStory=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Washington</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and </span><a href=\"https://www.reutersconnect.com/all?search=all%3AL2N3F024M&linkedFromStory=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Georgia</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trump has pleaded not guilty in all four cases.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the New York civil case, Trump </span><a href=\"https://www.reutersconnect.com/all?search=all%3AL1N3E001J&linkedFromStory=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lashed out in the courtroom</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Jan. 11 against both the judge and James while proclaiming his innocence. \"You have your own agenda,\" Trump scolded Engoron, who told Trump's lawyer \"control your client.\" The judge during the trial had fined Trump $15,000 for twice violating a gag order against disparaging court staff.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engoron </span><a href=\"https://www.reutersconnect.com/all?search=all%3AL1N3B22XW&linkedFromStory=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ruled in September</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Trump's financial statements were fraudulent, leaving the focus of the trial on how much Trump should pay in penalties.
