(Photo: SA Harvest)</em></p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nel said the team had already delivered 1,700 food parcels in some of the Eastern Cape’s poorest areas – Lusikisiki, Mbizana, Flagstaff and Mthatha.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“In Flagstaff, we were working with the schools where parents manage soup kitchens. In Mthatha we reached out to the waste-picker families, where we reached 200 families,” he said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team was distributing food parcels to 200 families in Port St Johns when </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2024-01-17-port-st-johns-on-knifes-edge-amid-bid-to-broker-peace-between-warring-taxi-associations/%5C\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extreme taxi violence</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rocked the district. But in the Eastern Cape this applies to one in every three households. It is the country’s worst-affected province.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One in four children in the province is stunted by malnutrition.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between 2021 and 2022, at least 1,000 children in the province were diagnosed with severe acute malnutrition, which led to the deaths of 120 children.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Eastern Cape Health Department said that between September 2022 and August 2023 there were 456 new cases of severe acute malnutrition in children under five. But in the Eastern Cape this applies to one in every three households. It is the country’s worst-affected province.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One in four children in the province is stunted by malnutrition.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between 2021 and 2022, at least 1,000 children in the province were diagnosed with severe acute malnutrition, which led to the deaths of 120 children.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Eastern Cape Health Department said that between September 2022 and August 2023 there were 456 new cases of severe acute malnutrition in children under five.
