"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Monday, 2 September, 10 construction workers died and 29 were hospitalised after the bus they were travelling in left the road and rolled down a slope on Vanrhyns Pass in the Western Cape. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The workers were travelling to Ceres from Upington in the Northern Cape to construct solar panels.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibhayi Contracting confirmed that it had employed the workers and said it would cover a portion of the funeral costs for those who died.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“We will cover a certain portion of the funeral cost, but not be excessive. Mayberry said the workers were returning to Ceres after a break in Upington.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“The workers were coming from a weekend break in Upington and they have been working for me for years. They are my skilled people that have built solar panels. They were brought here to pass on the knowledge to the local people that haven’t built solar panels.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The owner of the bus, Torido Williams, told the </span><a href=\"https://www.iol.co.za/capeargus/news/bus-owner-opens-up-about-fatal-van-rhyns-pass-crash-69be61b7-2e22-427b-8619-ca31d84bd052\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cape Argus</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: “The bus was roadworthy, [it] went through a test two months ago. It had the licence; it had the permit and it had insurance. It was fine, this is just a driver error accident.” </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The names of the workers have not yet been released and the police are investigating.</span>\r\n<h4><b>‘Sad day for the working class’</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Western Cape Cosatu secretary Malvern de Bruyn said the employer of the 10 construction workers must pay for all the funeral expenses.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“The employers must take full responsibility [for] the funerals of the people so that they can get a decent funeral and they must look after the interest of the families of the workers,” said De Bruyn.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rural and Farmworkers Development Organisation director Billy Claasen said, “These workers came from different communities in the Northern Cape and were employed as semi-skilled labourers. This is a sad day for our working class.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Western Cape Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku expressed his condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this incredibly difficult time. We also wish to express our care and concern for those who sustained injuries; we are hopeful for their speedy recovery,” said Sileku.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He said their team was providing counselling services to the families. </span><b>DM</b>",
