"description": "Daily Maverick is an independent online news publication and weekly print newspaper in South Africa.\r\n\r\nIt is known for breaking some of the defining stories of South Africa in the past decade, including the Marikana Massacre, in which the South African Police Service killed 34 miners in August 2012.\r\n\r\nIt also investigated the Gupta Leaks, which won the 2019 Global Shining Light Award.\r\n\r\nThat investigation was credited with exposing the Indian-born Gupta family and former President Jacob Zuma for their role in the systemic political corruption referred to as state capture.\r\n\r\nIn 2018, co-founder and editor-in-chief Branislav ‘Branko’ Brkic was awarded the country’s prestigious Nat Nakasa Award, recognised for initiating the investigative collaboration after receiving the hard drive that included the email tranche.\r\n\r\nIn 2021, co-founder and CEO Styli Charalambous also received the award.\r\n\r\nDaily Maverick covers the latest political and news developments in South Africa with breaking news updates, analysis, opinions and more.",

Composed of public and private companies, it aims to help steer South Africa’s energy transition and provide a unified voice for the energy sector. \r\n\r\nIt was probably fitting that load shedding recommenced at 4pm on Wednesday just as the online launch of the Energy Council finished. It was a reminder, if any was needed, of South Africa’s ongoing energy crisis. \r\n\r\nIt remains to be seen what this new collaboration accomplishes, but perhaps it was inevitable. The mining industry has the Minerals Council, agriculture has too many industry groups to count, and so on. It is also a mix of private and public companies. \r\n\r\nIts founding members are: Anglo American Platinum, the Central Energy Fund, Eskom, Exxaro, the Industrial Development Corporation, Sasol, Total, and Naamsa or the Automotive Business Council. \r\n\r\nFleetwood Grobler, the CEO of Sasol who is the Energy Council’s first chairman, said the council was open to members across the energy sector, including, notably, those involved in renewables and green hydrogen. \r\n\r\n“The genesis of the Energy Council was a discussion we had with Minister [Gwede] Mantashe, who spoke of the need for an integrated voice for the energy sector. "description": "Gwede Mantashe is a South African politician and the current Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy within the African National Congress (ANC). \r\n\r\nThe portfolio was called the Ministry of Minerals and Energy until May 2009, when President Jacob Zuma split it into two separate portfolios under the Ministry of Mining (later the Ministry of Mineral Resources) and the Ministry of Energy. Ten years later, in May 2019, his successor President Cyril Ramaphosa reunited the portfolios as the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy. \r\n\r\nMantashe was born in 1955 in the Eastern Cape province, and began his working life at Western Deep Levels mine in 1975 as a Recreation Officer and, in the same year, moved to Prieska Copper Mines where he was Welfare Officer until 1982.\r\n\r\nHe then joined Matla Colliery and co-founded the Witbank branch of the National Union of Mine Workers (NUM), becoming its Chairperson. He held the position of NUM Regional Secretary in 1985. Mantashe showcased his skills and leadership within the NUM, serving as the National Organiser from 1988 to 1993 and as the Regional Coordinator from 1993 to 1994.\r\n\r\nFrom 1994 to 1998, Mantashe held the role of Assistant General Secretary of the NUM and was later elected General Secretary in 1998.\r\n\r\nDuring his initial tenure in government, Mantashe served as a Councillor in the Ekurhuleni Municipality from 1995 to 1999. Notably, he made history by becoming the first trade unionist appointed to the Board of Directors of a Johannesburg Stock Exchange-listed company, Samancor.\r\n\r\nIn May 2006, Mantashe stepped down as the General Secretary of the NUM and took on the role of Executive Director at the Development Bank of Southern Africa for a two-year period. He also chaired the Technical Working Group of the Joint Initiative for Priority Skills Acquisition.\r\n\r\nIn 2007, Mantashe became the Chairperson of the South African Communist Party and a member of its Central Committee. He was elected Secretary-General of the African National Congress (ANC) at the party's 52nd National Conference in December 2007. Mantashe was re-elected to the same position in 2012. Additionally, at the ANC's 54th National Conference in 2017, he was elected as the National Chairperson.\r\n\r\nMantashe is a complex and controversial figure. He has been accused of being too close to the ANC's corrupt leadership, and of being a hardliner who is opposed to reform. \r\n\r\nHis actions and statements have sparked controversy and allegations of protecting corruption, undermining democratic principles, and prioritising party loyalty over the interests of the country.",
