"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">‘I am going to be there with the woman who queues at Sassa… I am going to be there with young people who want to know why they cannot get on a train safely. Those are the people I am going to Parliament with. I am not going to Parliament alone,” said Abdurrazack “Zackie” Achmat about his campaign for a seat in next year’s election.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Achmat intends to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 elections, the first time independents will be allowed to run for Parliament.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He sat down with </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to talk</span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about his campaign.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I’ve had 47 years in public life... The last thing I wanted to do was to go anywhere near Parliament,” he said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“The way Parliament operated and continues to operate has become totally unethical… corrupt in many ways. [There’s a] failure to do any real oversight of ministries, of state-owned entities and municipalities,” said Achmat.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If elected to Parliament, he says he will focus on four key issues: fixing the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa), the state power utility Eskom and the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa). He also wants a seat on Parliament’s public purse watchdog, the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa).</span>\r\n<h4><b>‘A functioning state helps working-class people’</b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> </span></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I don’t have a grand vision for the country. I’m not going to promise to end unemployment, because I think in our lifetime that’s virtually an impossibility given where mechanisation is going; given where Artificial Intelligence is going.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A grand vision, he said, was a discussion that must be had in Parliament, in society and at union level.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, the conversation needed to turn to a basic income for people, including the middle class, argued Achmat.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1681232\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/sune-zackie-interview3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"441\" /> Flashback -- Former President Nelson Mandela with Zackie Achmat, who launched the Treatment Action Campaign in 1998 with other HIV activists. (Photo: Gallo Images via Getty Images/Sunday Times/Terry Shean)</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Middle-class people are going to lose their jobs because AI will do medicine, accountancy… all those jobs are under serious threat,” he said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both pragmatically and as a slogan, Achmat said he wished every political party and every person who contests the elections would “agree to one thing: Fix the state, fix the state, fix the state. Repeat it a million times”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Achmat said, for example, that the job of MPs who sit on water and sanitation oversight committees “is not to sleep day and night … but to fix the water crisis in the Free State and now in Gauteng and so on”.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Prasa, Eskom and Sassa</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“With Prasa I have a depth of experience,” he said about his directorship role at #UniteBehind, a civil society coalition that mobilises on issues of common ground.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A strong focus of #UniteBehind is Prasa, with the goal of fixing the country’s struggling rail network for commuters.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“At the same time, I’m learning about electricity. I don’t know enough, but I do know renewables are critical to our society,” he said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Achmat said he wanted MPs to sit up at night and ask what they were doing to fix the grid.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He said if he had the time, he’d also like to sit on the health committee.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And he wants to bring pensioners to Parliament so that they can ventilate their struggles.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I will work with people on Sassa and I want to be in Scopa. I’ll raise all Sassa’s criminality in Scopa and then go to the Appropriations Committee and say, cut their money here and give more money there. (Photo: zackie2024.com)</em></p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bringing people to the National Assembly harkens back to Achmat’s days in the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) when organisers took people living with HIV to Parliament to testify about their lived realities.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“It’s not just taking people as victims, but it’s ensuring that people have the knowledge of what can be done and to give that knowledge to Parliament and to put the right type of pressure,” he said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Achmat was one of the founders of the TAC in </span><a href=\"https://www.sahistory.org.za/dated-event/birth-treatment-action-campaign\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cape Town</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on 10 December 1998.</span>\r\n<h4><b>A lifetime in activism</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Achmat is a lifelong activist, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-11-07-whatever-happened-to-hiv-aids-activist-zackie-achmat/?token=MEdjczVNYUpZeFBuZmN2SkdvQUJXRUZWRGdEMnVmNVdjYlRVazlBTVZYYkJPN1ZtVGRiZ0NoUTNjSDc1elEzMGlTb0Rvb0R1eUxydG5CMEwyTHpKRU5zSTNBMnIwclZiYVZvblNONGJUbjNLY0JRSmxkL3JrOGlzRkM4YmxhakVRZTh5OE9KUmZFa3d5bGl3eFdKbk9QN1FjUUpPS2I3RFdmRDRCemlrWk5ZPQ==&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Ungrouped%20transactional%20email&utm_content=Ungrouped%20transactional%20email+ID_187c2be5-edb3-11ed-8cc7-f730e68fd7f9&utm_source=TouchBasePro&utm_term=click%20here\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">starting in 1976</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when he helped set fire to his school during the student uprisings. He had been a member of the ANC </span><a href=\"https://www.iol.co.za/news/politics/jz-goes-or-i-do-zackie-achmat-1429540\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">since 1980</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while in prison and remained a member of the liberation movement after South Africa became a democratic country in 1994.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, he is no longer a member of the ruling party. “I can’t remember when I left. Was it 2003 or 2006 or 2007?”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In </span><a href=\"https://www.sahistory.org.za/dated-event/birth-treatment-action-campaign\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1998, on the steps of St George’s Cathedral in Cape Town</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Achmat and a group of 15 people founded the TAC to demand medical treatment for people living with the virus that causes Aids.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The TAC campaigned to force drug companies to reduce the costs of life-saving drugs for HIV-positive people. Achmat led a campaign that would shame the </span><a href=\"https://www.theguardian.com/world/2008/sep/12/matthiasrath.aids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mbeki administration</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into putting its denialist views aside and making medication available to the poor.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But while Achmat had been respected in the civil society sector, in 2018 he was accused of covering up sexual harassment claims against Equal Education co-founder Doron Isaacs.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Achmat was chairperson of the board at the time and he denied any wrongdoing in the </span><a href=\"https://mg.co.za/article/2018-05-18-00-ngos-sexual-harassment-woes-grow/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mail and Guardian</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">’s investigation</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into the matter. In</span><a href=\"https://www.news24.com/News24/equal-education-investigation-clears-co-founder-and-prominent-activist-of-sexual-misconduct-and-cover-up-20181128\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> November 2018</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, both Achmat and Isaacs were cleared of wrongdoing in a report by retired Judge Kathleen Satchwell.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1681197\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/michael-hatespeech1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"342\" /> Activist Zackie Achmat addresses protestors against the Protection of State Information Bill outside Parliament on November 22, 2011 in Cape Town, South Africa. So I will take money from people who are capitalists”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Achmat made it clear he wouldn’t accept money from people in the fossil fuel, arms or pharmaceutical industries.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“But I will take money from rich people – and they must sign a contract with me: no favours asked. You don’t ask me for favours. I will not give you favours … that’s in the contract, and when your interests come up in Parliament – even if I agree with it – I’m going to abstain unless it’s desperately necessary for working-class people to have that,” he said. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Achmat wants his position to be seen as “one of integrity and not one of doing favours”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an ordinary member of Parliament, Achmat would earn almost </span><a href=\"https://africacheck.org/fact-checks/factsheets/factsheet-how-much-do-south-african-mps-earn-and-what-do-they-do-it\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R1.2-million a year</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, plus a range of benefits.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-87711\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/Zackie-Achmat-Option-1-e1529076995134.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"404\" /> Archive photo: Zackie Achmat and other activists under the #UniteBehind banner march towards National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), 1 November 2017. Photo: Ashraf Hendricks</p>\r\n<h4><b>Can he succeed?</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what are his chances of gaining one of the 400 seats in the National Assembly? </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 17 April 2023, President Cyril Ramaphosa signed into law the Electoral Amendment Bill, which allows for changes to the Electoral Act enabling independents to contest elections. The DA is particularly popular among white and middle-class voters.</p>\r\n<p data-sourcepos=\"7:1-7:387\">Other opposition parties include the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), the Freedom Front Plus (FF+), and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP). The EFF is a left-wing populist party that is popular among young black voters. The FF+ is a right-wing party that represents the interests of white Afrikaans-speaking voters. [There’s a] failure to do any real oversight of ministries, of state-owned entities and municipalities,” said Achmat.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If elected to Parliament, he says he will focus on four key issues: fixing the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa), the state power utility Eskom and the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa). He also wants a seat on Parliament’s public purse watchdog, the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa).</span>\r\n<h4><b>‘A functioning state helps working-class people’</b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> </span></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I don’t have a grand vision for the country. I’m not going to promise to end unemployment, because I think in our lifetime that’s virtually an impossibility given where mechanisation is going; given where Artificial Intelligence is going.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A grand vision, he said, was a discussion that must be had in Parliament, in society and at union level.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, the conversation needed to turn to a basic income for people, including the middle class, argued Achmat.</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1681232\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"720\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-1681232\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/sune-zackie-interview3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"441\" /> Flashback -- Former President Nelson Mandela with Zackie Achmat, who launched the Treatment Action Campaign in 1998 with other HIV activists. (Photo: Gallo Images via Getty Images/Sunday Times/Terry Shean)[/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Middle-class people are going to lose their jobs because AI will do medicine, accountancy… all those jobs are under serious threat,” he said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both pragmatically and as a slogan, Achmat said he wished every political party and every person who contests the elections would “agree to one thing: Fix the state, fix the state, fix the state. Repeat it a million times”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Achmat said, for example, that the job of MPs who sit on water and sanitation oversight committees “is not to sleep day and night … but to fix the water crisis in the Free State and now in Gauteng and so on”.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Prasa, Eskom and Sassa</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“With Prasa I have a depth of experience,” he said about his directorship role at #UniteBehind, a civil society coalition that mobilises on issues of common ground.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A strong focus of #UniteBehind is Prasa, with the goal of fixing the country’s struggling rail network for commuters.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“At the same time, I’m learning about electricity. I don’t know enough, but I do know renewables are critical to our society,” he said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Achmat said he wanted MPs to sit up at night and ask what they were doing to fix the grid.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He said if he had the time, he’d also like to sit on the health committee.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And he wants to bring pensioners to Parliament so that they can ventilate their struggles.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I will work with people on Sassa and I want to be in Scopa. I’ll raise all Sassa’s criminality in Scopa and then go to the Appropriations Committee and say, cut their money here and give more money there. (Photo: zackie2024.com)</em>[/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bringing people to the National Assembly harkens back to Achmat’s days in the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) when organisers took people living with HIV to Parliament to testify about their lived realities.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“It’s not just taking people as victims, but it’s ensuring that people have the knowledge of what can be done and to give that knowledge to Parliament and to put the right type of pressure,” he said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Achmat was one of the founders of the TAC in </span><a href=\"https://www.sahistory.org.za/dated-event/birth-treatment-action-campaign\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cape Town</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on 10 December 1998.</span>\r\n<h4><b>A lifetime in activism</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Achmat is a lifelong activist, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-11-07-whatever-happened-to-hiv-aids-activist-zackie-achmat/?token=MEdjczVNYUpZeFBuZmN2SkdvQUJXRUZWRGdEMnVmNVdjYlRVazlBTVZYYkJPN1ZtVGRiZ0NoUTNjSDc1elEzMGlTb0Rvb0R1eUxydG5CMEwyTHpKRU5zSTNBMnIwclZiYVZvblNONGJUbjNLY0JRSmxkL3JrOGlzRkM4YmxhakVRZTh5OE9KUmZFa3d5bGl3eFdKbk9QN1FjUUpPS2I3RFdmRDRCemlrWk5ZPQ==&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Ungrouped%20transactional%20email&utm_content=Ungrouped%20transactional%20email+ID_187c2be5-edb3-11ed-8cc7-f730e68fd7f9&utm_source=TouchBasePro&utm_term=click%20here\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">starting in 1976</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when he helped set fire to his school during the student uprisings. He had been a member of the ANC </span><a href=\"https://www.iol.co.za/news/politics/jz-goes-or-i-do-zackie-achmat-1429540\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">since 1980</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while in prison and remained a member of the liberation movement after South Africa became a democratic country in 1994.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, he is no longer a member of the ruling party. “I can’t remember when I left. Was it 2003 or 2006 or 2007?”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In </span><a href=\"https://www.sahistory.org.za/dated-event/birth-treatment-action-campaign\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1998, on the steps of St George’s Cathedral in Cape Town</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Achmat and a group of 15 people founded the TAC to demand medical treatment for people living with the virus that causes Aids.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The TAC campaigned to force drug companies to reduce the costs of life-saving drugs for HIV-positive people. Achmat led a campaign that would shame the </span><a href=\"https://www.theguardian.com/world/2008/sep/12/matthiasrath.aids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mbeki administration</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into putting its denialist views aside and making medication available to the poor.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But while Achmat had been respected in the civil society sector, in 2018 he was accused of covering up sexual harassment claims against Equal Education co-founder Doron Isaacs.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Achmat was chairperson of the board at the time and he denied any wrongdoing in the </span><a href=\"https://mg.co.za/article/2018-05-18-00-ngos-sexual-harassment-woes-grow/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mail and Guardian</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">’s investigation</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into the matter. So I will take money from people who are capitalists”.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Achmat made it clear he wouldn’t accept money from people in the fossil fuel, arms or pharmaceutical industries.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“But I will take money from rich people – and they must sign a contract with me: no favours asked. You don’t ask me for favours.
