"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 30 August 2023, a super blue moon lit up the night sky with a bold and bright face, appearing around 14% larger than usual. The photographs captured from across the world were spectacular as it rose above Earthlings, from a baseball game in San Francisco to the famous Galata Tower in Istanbul, Turkey.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What makes a </span><a href=\"https://moon.nasa.gov/news/197/super-blue-moons-your-questions-answered/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">super blue moon</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so special is that it is really a trifecta of phenomena all occurring in one, dazzling lunar event — a full moon, a supermoon and a blue moon all coinciding. </span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1835191\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/GettyImages-1647636991.jpg\" alt=\"super blue moon\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" /> <em>Brandon Williamson of the Cincinnati Reds pitches against the San Francisco Giants while an almost full moon rises behind him in the fourth inning at Oracle Park on 29 August, 2023 in San Francisco, California. Here, the sun reflects off of the moon’s surface and beams to Earth. As the moon orbits Earth, it stands at different angles to the sun, appearing to be in different phases. Rather, the moon travels in an elliptical fashion around the Earth, which is always closer to one end of the ellipse, never directly in the middle. This means that at times the moon will be closer to the Earth on one end of the elongated circle than it is at the other side. When the Moon is at the closest point to Earth at the same time that it is full, a supermoon is occurring, where it appears closer, larger and brighter in the sky. In 2023, </span><a href=\"https://www.space.com/38940-supermoon-facts.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> out of the 13 full moons are supermoons. </span>\r\n\r\nhttps://youtu.be/qZaxqMyP9tU\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, a blue moon is a term that refers to the occurrence of two full moons in the same month. The moon is not actually blue, but the phrase does inform the </span><a href=\"https://www.dictionary.com/browse/once-in-a-blue-moon\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">idiom </span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“once in a blue moon”, where an event happens very rarely. A blue moon occurs because the moon’s orbit is slightly less than a full month, so every once in a while, two full moons will take place within the same month. 2023 only saw one blue moon, making the August 30 event even more significant. According to Nasa, about 25% of all full moons are supermoons, but only 3% of full moons are blue moons, and the next super blue moons will only occur again in January 2037. </span>\r\n<h4><b>Tidal warnings</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The super blue moon was more than a pretty face, and prior to its occurrence, coastal authorities issued notices warning communities to be cautious.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“This full moon brings the Spring tide — where high tide is higher than normal and low tide is lower than normal,” the </span><a href=\"https://www.nsri.org.za/2023/08/super-blue-moon-spring-tide-coming-over-30th-and-31st-august/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Sea Rescue Institute said. </span></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Spring tides occur at full moon and at new moon every month [and] can have an increased effect on the strength of rip currents.” </span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1835196\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/GettyImages-1649920716.jpg\" alt=\"super blue moon\" width=\"720\" height=\"481\" /> <em>A full blue moon rises behind the San Francisco skyline on 30 August, 2023 in San Francisco, California. As the moon orbits, the gravitational forces draw the Earth’s water and create tides. When the moon is full, the Earth, Sun, and Moon line up and their gravitational power combines to make exceptionally high tides, called spring tides, as well as very low tides where the water has been displaced.
