"contents": "https://youtu.be/yztJG_N2DU4\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After President Cyril Ramaphosa </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2024-06-30-ramaphosa-announces-cabinet-with-ministers-from-anc-da-ifp-pa-and-pac/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> his Cabinet for the Government of National Unity (GNU), it didn’t take long for commentary to start flying about the </span><a href=\"https://www.sanews.gov.za/south-africa/meet-sas-new-cabinet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">six DA ministers</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> he appointed.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the claims that went viral on social media was that the new Home Affairs Minister </span><a href=\"https://www.da.org.za/2024/06/da-announces-national-executive-members-as-part-of-the-gnu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leon Schreiber</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was from Zimbabwe.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is this true?</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the X accounts to tweet this allegation belongs to </span><a href=\"https://www.pa.org.za/person/mehmet-vefa-dag/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mehmet Vefa Dag</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a wannabe politician who stood unsuccessfully for election for the Land Party.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dag </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/AFRICANDEMOC/status/1807707328055058781\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: “</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BREAKING NEWS: The Republic of South Africa demands answers as the DA Minister of Home Affairs Leon Schreiber who is alleged to [be] a Zimbabwean foreigner is given a key position in [the] country. On Wikipedia Leon’s place of birth was changed 5 hours ago from Zimbabwe to South Africa, this is happening while South Africa is watching.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He accompanied his tweet with a screenshot of Wikipedia showing the site’s edit panel, which Dag presented as evidence of the claim that Schreiber’s birthplace was hastily changed to South Africa after his appointment as minister.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we checked Schreiber’s </span><a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leon_Schreiber\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wikipedia page</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a few hours later, all reference to his place of birth had been removed.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it was evident from the recent history of Schreiber’s entry that an edit war had been happening on his page since just after Ramaphosa’s Cabinet announcement. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A </span><a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Edit_warring\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wikipedia edit war</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is when two or more people repeatedly override each other’s edits. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of the Leon Schreiber entry, the bone of contention appeared to be the minister’s place of birth.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But as other social media users pointed out to Dag, the edit screenshot that he shared showed the opposite of what he claimed. It showed that Schreiber’s place of birth had been edited to say he was born in the Harare suburb of Borrowdale in Zimbabwe, away from the original statement that he was born in the Northern Cape.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schreiber, who is Afrikaans, has </span><a href=\"https://twitter.com/Leon_Schreib/status/1807756663518085479\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">since confirmed</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that he was born in Piketberg in the Northern Cape and raised in Kleinzee, Namaqualand.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As is often the case, one of the giveaways that the claim about Schreiber was fake news was that the word ‘Zimbabwean', on the screenshot shared by Dag, was misspelt.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick: </b><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/fact-check-hub/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fact Check Hub</span></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This particular piece of misinformation is likely part of a </span><a href=\"https://cabc.org.za/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/EU_Xenophobia_Report_7.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">xenophobic</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> campaign which has been waged on </span><a href=\"https://x.com/VotePA_SA/status/1526162151777476608\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social media</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in recent years. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is possibly also linked to the disappointment of Patriotic Alliance voters that their </span><a href=\"https://mypa.org.za/about/our-history-2/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leader</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Gayton McKenzie, was not named Home Affairs minister as the </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2024-06-06-patriotic-alliance-has-big-ambitions-after-surprise-showing-at-the-polls/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">party</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had hoped. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McKenzie and the Patriotic Alliance ran an </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2024-04-21-patriotic-alliance-manifesto-our-god-first-others-stay-out/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">openly xenophobic</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> election campaign under the slogan “</span><a href=\"https://x.com/GaytonMcK/status/1805821832961908976\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abahambe</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">”, meaning “They must go”; a reference to foreigners.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Falsely claiming that Schreiber is Zimbabwean looks likely to be part of a misinformation war being waged against the newly formed GNU. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ironically, </span><a href=\"https://www.linkedin.com/posts/mehmet-vefa-dag-b7214b67_as-a-south-african-of-turkish-origin-it-activity-7179895328362381313-Jvrf/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dag</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> himself is <a href=\"https://www.dailysabah.com/turkey/2019/03/05/in-a-first-turk-runs-for-presidency-in-south-africa\">originally</a> <a href=\"https://www.aa.com.tr/en/africa/politician-of-turkish-origin-to-compete-in-south-africas-general-elections/3216955\">Turkish</a>. </span><b>DM</b>\r\n\r\n<i>Daily Maverick's journalism is funded by the contributions of our Maverick Insider members.
