"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue is more than being worn out or sleepy. It’s an excessive tiredness that persists </span><a href=\"https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/fatigue\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">despite resting or good sleep</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It’s likely a result of our body’s strong immune response to the virus.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But in some people the fatigue drags on even when the infection is gone. This can be debilitating and frustrating. Simply resting more makes no difference.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here’s what we know about post-</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Covid-19</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fatigue, and what can help.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Fatigue or tiredness? What’s the difference?</b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term ‘fatigue' can mean different things to different people. Some people mean their muscles are easily weakened. Walking to the mailbox feels like they have run a marathon. Others describe a generalised exhaustion, whether they are moving or not. People can experience </span><a href=\"https://academic.oup.com/brain/article/140/8/2240/3924144?login=false\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">physical, mental or emotional</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fatigue, or any combination of these.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The difference between tiredness and fatigue is this: tiredness can get better with enough rest, while </span><a href=\"https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/conditionsandtreatments/fatigue\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fatigue persists</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> even if someone is sleeping and resting more than ever.</span>\r\n<h4><b>How big a problem is this?</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because there is no agreed definition of post-</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Covid-19</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fatigue, it is impossible to give exact numbers of how many people experience it.</span>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Jeez, the post-Covid brain fog and fatigue are so real. After missing 7 days of work and trying to now catch up, I physically feel like I've just run a marathon, and I keep forgetting what it was that I was doing.</p>\r\n— Jo Boots (@Jo_BootsBoots) <a href=\"https://twitter.com/Jo_BootsBoots/status/1508887460973060099?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 29, 2022</a></blockquote>\r\n<script async src=\"https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"></script>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Estimates vary considerably worldwide. </span><a href=\"https://academic.oup.com/ofid/article/8/10/ofab440/6367589\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One review of 21 studies</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found 13-33% of people were fatigued 16-20 weeks after their symptoms started. This is a worryingly widespread problem.</span>\r\n<h4><b>When should I see my GP?</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many potential causes of fatigue. Even before the pandemic, fatigue was one of the most </span><a href=\"https://www.racgp.org.au/afp/2014/july/fatigue#ref-7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common reasons to see a GP</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most serious causes can be ruled out when your GP asks about your symptoms and examines you. Sometimes your GP will investigate further, perhaps by ordering blood tests.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms that should raise particular concern include fevers, unexplained weight loss, unusual bleeding or bruising, pain (anywhere) that wakes you from sleep, or drenching night sweats.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your fatigue is getting worse rather than better, or you cannot care for yourself properly, you really should seek medical care.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Is it like long Covid?</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early in the pandemic, we realised some patients had a cluster of debilitating symptoms that dragged on for months, which we now call long Covid.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some </span><a href=\"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/acn3.51350\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">85%</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of long Covid patients experience fatigue, making it one of the most common long Covid symptoms.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, people with long Covid have a range of other symptoms, such as “brain fog”, headaches and muscle aches. Patients with long Covid therefore experience more than fatigue, and sometimes don’t have fatigue at all.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Is this like chronic fatigue syndrome?</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We knew about </span><a href=\"https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/conditionsandtreatments/chronic-fatigue-syndrome-cfs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronic fatigue syndrome</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, otherwise known as myalgic encephalomyelitis, </span><a href=\"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/7978722/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">well before </span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Covid-19</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This often develops after a viral infection (for instance after infection with </span><a href=\"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2578266/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Epstein-Barr virus</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). So, understandably, there has been concern around the coronavirus potentially triggering chronic fatigue syndrome.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are striking similarities between chronic fatigue syndrome and long </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Covid-19</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Both involve debilitating fatigue, brain fog and/or muscle aches.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But at this stage, researchers are still </span><a href=\"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8180841/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">untangling any link</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between post-</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Covid-19</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fatigue, long Covid and chronic fatigue syndrome.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For now, we know many people will have post-</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Covid-19</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fatigue but thankfully do not go on to develop long Covid or chronic fatigue syndrome.</span>\r\n<h4><b>What helps me manage my fatigue?</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expect you or a loved one may develop post-Covid fatigue, </span><a href=\"https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0240784\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">regardless of how unwell you or they were</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during the actual infection.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccines help reduce the risk of post-Covid fatigue by lowering the chance of catching </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Covid-19 </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the first place. Vaccinated people who do catch </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Covid-19 </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are </span><a href=\"https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2022.01.05.22268800v2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less likely to report fatigue</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and are </span><a href=\"https://ukhsa.koha-ptfs.co.uk/cgi-bin/koha/opac-retrieve-file.pl?id=fe4f10cd3cd509fe045ad4f72ae0dfff\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less likely to develop long Covid.</span></a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, vaccination is not 100% protective and there are plenty of fully vaccinated people who go on to </span><a href=\"https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-03495-2#ref-CR2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">develop longer-term fatigue</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The evidence for what helps you recover from post-</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Covid</span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fatigue is in its infancy. However, a few things do help:</span>\r\n\r\n<b>1. Pace yourself:</b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> adjust the return to normal activities to your energy levels. </span><a href=\"https://publicdocuments.sth.nhs.uk/pil4828.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choose your priorities</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and focus on what you can do rather than what you can’t.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>2. Return to exercise gradually:</b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a </span><a href=\"https://bjsm.bmj.com/content/54/19/1174?fbclid=IwAR1f15hP9KwmEfqFPTNsIV8vRg6z9SWzLMEVGg2lMvyoj0lhnI_s-A_UrBw\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gradual return to exercise</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may help your recovery, but you may need some support about how to manage or avoid fatigue afterwards. Some therapists – occupational therapists, physiotherapists and exercise physiologists – specialise in this. So ask your GP for a recommendation.</span>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Ugh…post-covid sore throat and fatigue today. Prioritise sleep: </b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rather than feeling guilty about sleeping so much, remind yourself that while you sleep, your body conserves energy and heals. Disrupted sleep patterns are an unfortunate </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Covid-19 </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptom. Eat a range of nutritious foods:</b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> loss of smell, taste and appetite from </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Covid-19 </span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can make this tricky. However, try to view food as a way of fuelling your body with both energy and the micronutrients it needs to heal. Be careful not to spend a fortune on unproven “remedies” that often look good in small studies, but more robust research finds </span><a href=\"https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/chronic-fatigue-syndrome/expert-answers/chronic-fatigue/faq-20058033\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">make little difference.</span></a>\r\n\r\n<b>5. Monitor your fatigue:</b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> keep a diary to monitor your fatigue, and look for a gradual improvement. You will have good days and bad days, but overall there should be a slow trajectory towards recovery.
