We may not yet have the </span><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCjsUxbNmIs\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back to the Future</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> levitating cars which popular science fiction has been fantasising about for as long as cars have been around, but lightweight personal aircraft capable of navigating urban areas already exist.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several companies around the world have plans to roll them out as a paid public mode of transportation, and now the nature of the flying taxi industry is just a matter of efficiency, affordability and regulation. </span>\r\n<h4><b>What do flying taxis look like?</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The </span><a href=\"https://vtol.org/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vertical Flight Society</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reports that there are over 700 designs of Electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (<a href=\"https://builtin.com/transportation-tech/evtol-aircraft\">eVTOLs</a>) currently being tested by about 350 companies. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They have a variety of shapes, modes of flight and levels of automation, but the majority are wingless, resembling large drones with powerful rotors attached to a passenger pod in the centre. Most carry </span><a href=\"https://builtin.com/transportation-tech/evtol-aircraft\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">between one and six people</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including a pilot, and many can be piloted remotely.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1736678\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/GettyImages-1258843547.jpg\" alt=\"flying taxis\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" /> <em>A Renault AIR4 flying car concept at the Paris Air Show on 20 June 2023. (Photo: Benjamin Girette / Bloomberg via Getty Images)</em></p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on their intended use, they use either (or a combination of) vectored thrust or “</span><a href=\"https://simpleflying.com/lift-cruise-evtol-design-architecture-guide/#:~:text=The%20Lift%20and%20Cruise%20VTOL,are%20used%20for%20forward%20thrust.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lift-and-cruise</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">” flight, and are powered by </span><a href=\"https://nanografi.com/blog/lithiumion-batteries-for-aerospace-applications/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lithium-ion batteries</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which make them quieter, more environmentally friendly and potentially cheaper than aircraft powered by jet fuel. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the moment, the average battery life of </span><a href=\"https://www.cirium.com/thoughtcloud/ascend-by-cirium-weekly-team-perspective-evtol-market-position/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">frontrunner prototypes</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> allows a range of around 250km and a payload of 350kg.</span>\r\n<h4><b>How and when will eVTOLs be used?</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eVTOLs may be available as personal aircraft before they are certified for commercial use. </span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://builtin.com/transportation-tech/evtol-aircraft\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to some eVTOL manufacturers</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the certification process for non-commercial aircraft is less stringent, and eVTOLs may even be available privately as soon as </span><a href=\"https://www.jobyaviation.com/news/joby-production-launch-permit-to-fly-first-aircraft-on-production-line/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2024</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, until there is adequate infrastructure and stable regulation around the use of eVTOLs in populated urban areas, pilots would only be able to use them in a similar fashion to that of private helicopters or planes. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are still </span><a href=\"https://www.ctvnews.ca/business/flying-taxis-are-coming-eventually-to-an-exclusive-few-1.6499939\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">safety concerns</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> preventing the certification of commercial transportation of people in eVTOLs. For instance, their size limits the capacity of their reserve battery power, and their designs are still vulnerable to a “vortex ring state”, a phenomenon that can cause rotor-based aircraft to get caught in their own turbulence and suddenly lose altitude. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manufacturers are busy with regular testing, racing to perfect their designs. Many expect roll-out as soon as </span><a href=\"https://www.jobyaviation.com/news/joby-production-launch-permit-to-fly-first-aircraft-on-production-line/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2025</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">/</span><a href=\"https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-66264229\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">26</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://builtin.com/transportation-tech/evtol-aircraft\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first way</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in which eVTOLs are likely to be used in an urban environment is as unmanned, remotely piloted delivery services. (Photo: Benjamin Girette / Bloomberg via Getty Images)</em></p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even as a delivery service, eVTOLs still face the logistical challenge of the </span><a href=\"https://builtin.com/transportation-tech/evtol-aircraft\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">frequency of landing zones</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A city would need to build several authorised vertiports for eVTOLs to be of more practical use – an </span><a href=\"https://ww3.rics.org/uk/en/modus/built-environment/resilient-infrastructure/vertiports-urban-travel.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expensive and tricky investment</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Vertiports would require expensive equipment like conveyor belts and charging stations, and also a lot of space for hangars to ensure a better turnaround of aircraft, which is especially inconvenient because one of the benefits of eVTOLs is their suitability for urban environments which tend to be further away from open spaces.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For these reasons, and because their limited range makes them </span><a href=\"https://builtin.com/transportation-tech/evtol-aircraft\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unsuitable</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for long-haul deliveries or rescue missions, it may be the case that the commercial use of eVTOLs, whether for cargo or humans, will initially be restricted to regular routes such as </span><a href=\"https://www.ctvnews.ca/business/flying-taxis-are-coming-eventually-to-an-exclusive-few-1.6499939\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">between airports</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a busy city such as New York or Los Angeles. </span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-946279\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/LA-view-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" /> <em>Vehicles move slowly in rush-hour traffic on the Interstate 405 freeway and US 101 freeway interchange in Los Angeles, California, on 10 July 2015. (Photo: Patrick T Fallon / Bloomberg)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>Investment in eVTOLs</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vertiports started popping up in wealthier parts of the world a few years ago. </span><a href=\"https://www.volocopter.com/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volocopter</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> collaborated on the </span><a href=\"https://www.volocopter.com/newsroom/worlds-first-full-scale-air-taxi-voloport-unveiled-in-singapore/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first vertiport prototype</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which was built in Marina Bay, Singapore, in 2019. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since then they have built a European vertiport terminal testbed in </span><a href=\"https://www.volocopter.com/newsroom/vertiport-testbed-for-eu-uam-paris/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">France</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, acquired the London heliport at Canary Wharf to act as a node in the new </span><a href=\"https://skyports.net/vertiports/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">London vertiport network</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and are currently working on the construction of an air mobility infrastructure network in </span><a href=\"https://ww3.rics.org/uk/en/modus/built-environment/urbanisation/buildings-that-elevated-cities--dubai-s-burj-khalifa.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dubai</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.ctvnews.ca/business/flying-taxis-are-coming-eventually-to-an-exclusive-few-1.6499939\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the first half of 2023</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, $2.5-billion was raised for eVTOL development (15% more than in the first half of 2022) and nearly 8,000 “advanced air mobility aircraft”, mainly air taxis, were ordered by more than 80 companies, according to reports by </span><a href=\"https://www.cirium.com/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cirium</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an aviation data firm. </span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://mundogeo.com/en/2023/06/15/united-airlines-and-eve-air-mobility-collaborating-to-bring-first-evtols-flights-to-san-francisco/#:~:text=Eve's%20eVTOL%20will%20offer%20United's,forms%20of%20traditional%20public%20transportation.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United Airlines</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and </span><a href=\"https://www.smartcitiesdive.com/news/american-airlines-evtol-aircraft-vertical-aerospace/627713/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Airlines</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are two of the most vocal investors in eVTOLs, and several car companies have been partnering with eVTOL startups. Stellantis and Toyota are both aiming for commercial launches in 2025, and Hyundai is investing a whopping $1.5-billion in a commercial launch in 2028.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Hurdles in the eVTOL industry</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the roll-out of air taxis seems imminent, its scale will depend on the </span><a href=\"https://www.ctvnews.ca/business/flying-taxis-are-coming-eventually-to-an-exclusive-few-1.6499939\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cost</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of maintenance. Some experts expect the cost of an eVTOL itself will hover somewhere between $2-million and $5-million – a tad pricier than your average Uber. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It’s still unclear whether human air taxi use will be limited to medical emergency transportation, tourism and speedy luxury transportation for the rich, or whether it will become cheap enough for regular commuters, in which case a new can of worms will be opened in the form of urban air traffic. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There will likely be some </span><a href=\"https://www.ctvnews.ca/business/flying-taxis-are-coming-eventually-to-an-exclusive-few-1.6499939\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">resistance</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the widespread adoption of eVTOLs near residential areas because of the </span><a href=\"https://www.easa.europa.eu/en/domains/urban-air-mobility-uam\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public’s perceptions</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of potential dangers. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While flying taxis may sound like an exciting futuristic innovation to some, the buzzing of carbon fibre rotors overhead may irritate or unsettle people, especially if its use is restricted to the wealthy. </span><b>DM</b>",

For instance, their size limits the capacity of their reserve battery power, and their designs are still vulnerable to a “vortex ring state”, a phenomenon that can cause rotor-based aircraft to get caught in their own turbulence and suddenly lose altitude. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manufacturers are busy with regular testing, racing to perfect their designs. Many expect roll-out as soon as </span><a href=\"https://www.jobyaviation.com/news/joby-production-launch-permit-to-fly-first-aircraft-on-production-line/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2025</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">/</span><a href=\"https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-66264229\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">26</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://builtin.com/transportation-tech/evtol-aircraft\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first way</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in which eVTOLs are likely to be used in an urban environment is as unmanned, remotely piloted delivery services. (Photo: Benjamin Girette / Bloomberg via Getty Images)</em>[/caption]\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even as a delivery service, eVTOLs still face the logistical challenge of the </span><a href=\"https://builtin.com/transportation-tech/evtol-aircraft\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">frequency of landing zones</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A city would need to build several authorised vertiports for eVTOLs to be of more practical use – an </span><a href=\"https://ww3.rics.org/uk/en/modus/built-environment/resilient-infrastructure/vertiports-urban-travel.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expensive and tricky investment</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Vertiports would require expensive equipment like conveyor belts and charging stations, and also a lot of space for hangars to ensure a better turnaround of aircraft, which is especially inconvenient because one of the benefits of eVTOLs is their suitability for urban environments which tend to be further away from open spaces.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For these reasons, and because their limited range makes them </span><a href=\"https://builtin.com/transportation-tech/evtol-aircraft\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unsuitable</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for long-haul deliveries or rescue missions, it may be the case that the commercial use of eVTOLs, whether for cargo or humans, will initially be restricted to regular routes such as </span><a href=\"https://www.ctvnews.ca/business/flying-taxis-are-coming-eventually-to-an-exclusive-few-1.6499939\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">between airports</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a busy city such as New York or Los Angeles. </span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_946279\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"720\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-946279\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/LA-view-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" /> <em>Vehicles move slowly in rush-hour traffic on the Interstate 405 freeway and US 101 freeway interchange in Los Angeles, California, on 10 July 2015. (Photo: Patrick T Fallon / Bloomberg)</em>[/caption]\r\n<h4><b>Investment in eVTOLs</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vertiports started popping up in wealthier parts of the world a few years ago. </span><a href=\"https://www.volocopter.com/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volocopter</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> collaborated on the </span><a href=\"https://www.volocopter.com/newsroom/worlds-first-full-scale-air-taxi-voloport-unveiled-in-singapore/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first vertiport prototype</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which was built in Marina Bay, Singapore, in 2019. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since then they have built a European vertiport terminal testbed in </span><a href=\"https://www.volocopter.com/newsroom/vertiport-testbed-for-eu-uam-paris/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">France</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, acquired the London heliport at Canary Wharf to act as a node in the new </span><a href=\"https://skyports.net/vertiports/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">London vertiport network</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and are currently working on the construction of an air mobility infrastructure network in </span><a href=\"https://ww3.rics.org/uk/en/modus/built-environment/urbanisation/buildings-that-elevated-cities--dubai-s-burj-khalifa.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dubai</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.ctvnews.ca/business/flying-taxis-are-coming-eventually-to-an-exclusive-few-1.6499939\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the first half of 2023</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, $2.5-billion was raised for eVTOL development (15% more than in the first half of 2022) and nearly 8,000 “advanced air mobility aircraft”, mainly air taxis, were ordered by more than 80 companies, according to reports by </span><a href=\"https://www.cirium.com/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cirium</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an aviation data firm. </span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://mundogeo.com/en/2023/06/15/united-airlines-and-eve-air-mobility-collaborating-to-bring-first-evtols-flights-to-san-francisco/#:~:text=Eve's%20eVTOL%20will%20offer%20United's,forms%20of%20traditional%20public%20transportation.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United Airlines</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and </span><a href=\"https://www.smartcitiesdive.com/news/american-airlines-evtol-aircraft-vertical-aerospace/627713/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Airlines</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are two of the most vocal investors in eVTOLs, and several car companies have been partnering with eVTOL startups. Stellantis and Toyota are both aiming for commercial launches in 2025, and Hyundai is investing a whopping $1.5-billion in a commercial launch in 2028.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Hurdles in the eVTOL industry</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the roll-out of air taxis seems imminent, its scale will depend on the </span><a href=\"https://www.ctvnews.ca/business/flying-taxis-are-coming-eventually-to-an-exclusive-few-1.6499939\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cost</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of maintenance. Some experts expect the cost of an eVTOL itself will hover somewhere between $2-million and $5-million – a tad pricier than your average Uber. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It’s still unclear whether human air taxi use will be limited to medical emergency transportation, tourism and speedy luxury transportation for the rich, or whether it will become cheap enough for regular commuters, in which case a new can of worms will be opened in the form of urban air traffic. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There will likely be some </span><a href=\"https://www.ctvnews.ca/business/flying-taxis-are-coming-eventually-to-an-exclusive-few-1.6499939\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">resistance</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the widespread adoption of eVTOLs near residential areas because of the </span><a href=\"https://www.easa.europa.eu/en/domains/urban-air-mobility-uam\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public’s perceptions</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of potential dangers. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While flying taxis may sound like an exciting futuristic innovation to some, the buzzing of carbon fibre rotors overhead may irritate or unsettle people, especially if its use is restricted to the wealthy. </span><b>DM</b>",
