"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have now entered the third consecutive year of La Niña, which is so rare that it has only been seen twice since 1950.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Niña, or the “little girl”, is a global weather phenomenon that occurs in the Pacific Ocean, and for some countries like South Africa brings above-average rainfall.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The opposite is El Niño (the “little boy”), which brings drier conditions.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists had hypothesised that global warming and the heating of the Pacific Ocean through anthropogenic-caused warming would be likely to result in more El Niños that would usher in periods of drought in places like South Africa. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But new research recently published in the journal </span><a href=\"https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1029/2022GL100011\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geophysical Research Letters</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests unexpectedly that at least in the short term climate change might trigger more La Niñas. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why this is so is not fully understood.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usually, the Pacific Ocean cycles between El Niño and La Niña conditions, but when scientists looked at temperatures on the surface of the ocean recorded by ships and ocean buoys between 1979 and 2020, they noticed a surprising trend.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The part of the Pacific Ocean responsible for the two opposing weather phenomena, off South America, has cooled slightly.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Over the last 40 years, that climate is changing in the opposite direction. And that part we don’t really understand,” says the lead author of the paper, Robert Jnglin Wills, a University of Washington research scientist in atmospheric sciences.
