"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The victorious Springbok Rugby World Cup class of 1995 lost another member this week with the tragic news that Hannes Strydom was killed in a car accident on Sunday night.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strydom is now the fifth member of South Africa’s first-ever World Cup-winning team to pass on after Ruben Kruger, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2017-02-06-rugby-world-pays-tribute-to-brilliant-man-joost-van-der-westhuizen/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joost van der Westhuizen</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Chester Williams and </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2019-07-12-james-small-a-turbulent-life-both-on-and-off-the-rugby-field/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James Small</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Coach of the 1995 Boks </span><a href=\"https://mg.co.za/article/1999-04-23-kitch-christie-dies/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kitch Christie</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has also passed away.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strydom’s wife Nikolie</span><a href=\"https://www.news24.com/sport/rugby/springboks/1995-springbok-world-cup-hero-hannes-strydom-has-died-20231120\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">confirmed to </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">News24</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Strydom had died in an accident on the N4 close to Emalahleni in the direction of Pretoria.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The towering lock formed a formidable second row with Transvaal (as the Lions were then known) and the Boks with Kobus Wiese.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1946057\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/TL_589171-e1700483859926.jpg\" alt=\"Hannes Strydom\" width=\"720\" height=\"392\" /> <em>Hannes Strydom in line out action. Apart from helping the Springboks to win the Webb Ellis Cup for the first time, he also played against the British & Irish Lions in 1997.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was also a key member of the brilliant Transvaal (Lions) teams when they won the Super 10, Currie Cup and Vodacom Cup in the 1990s.
