Arendse was also the No 1 when Bafana won their only Afcon in 1996.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, Williams has an opportunity to captain Bafana Bafana to glory while adding his chapter to Bafana’s storied goalkeeping history.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Rough start</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The former SuperSport United ’keeper received much criticism after conceding five goals on debut when Bafana Bafana were smashed 5-0 by five-time world champions Brazil back in 2014. Some said he was not good enough for the gloves following South Africa’s heaviest defeat in soccer, post-apartheid.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A decade later he is proving his critics and doubters wrong. Emphatically so. (Photo: Ryan Wilkisky/ BackpagePix)</em></p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Igesund — the only coach to win the </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-12-14-challenge-of-clinching-the-league-unbeaten-is-the-perfect-stimulant-for-sundowns/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DStv Premiership</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with four different teams — trusted Williams in that Brazil match, picking him as a replacement for the injured Khune, who was the first-choice goalkeeper at the time. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I sent him a personal message [after his heroics against Cape Verde],” Igesund, who coached Bafana between 2012 and 2014, told </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. “I don’t know if he got it… I’m so proud of him because he was by far the man of the match. It was unbelievable the leadership he showed again.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“He must be by far the goalkeeper of the tournament. To save four penalties… plus, in the last minute, to save a shot that looked like it was going in. He was absolutely outstanding.” </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Igesund, who also worked with Williams for two years at club level when the pair were at SuperSport, told </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the Gqeberha-born goalie is a “magnificent character”. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“He is a good person. [When I coached him] he was a good youngster that worked very hard. Someone who would die out there for the team and his teammates, while still being very humble and keeping his feet on the ground. I’m just so proud of him,” Igesund said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Williams’ humility was echoed by another mentor who thrust him into the spotlight, this time at club level. Gavin Hunt, another decorated South African coach, handed Williams his SuperSport debut in 2011.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goalkeeper joined the club in 2004, aged 12. Hunt, who was with Matsantsantsa between 2007 and 2013 had ample opportunity to interact with Williams before leaving the club. When he returned in 2022, Williams had left to join Sundowns.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“He’s grown, hey. Matured tremendously. He’s a fantastic goalkeeper. From when he was a boy, he’s reached great heights,” Hunt told </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“He’s a very humble boy. A very nice boy. [When I coached him] he was a good youngster that worked very hard. Someone who would die out there for the team and his teammates, while still being very humble and keeping his feet on the ground. I’m just so proud of him,” Igesund said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Williams’ humility was echoed by another mentor who thrust him into the spotlight, this time at club level. Gavin Hunt, another decorated South African coach, handed Williams his SuperSport debut in 2011.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goalkeeper joined the club in 2004, aged 12. Hunt, who was with Matsantsantsa between 2007 and 2013 had ample opportunity to interact with Williams before leaving the club. A very nice boy.
