"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) confirmed on Tuesday that </span><a href=\"https://www.nicd.ac.za/measles-alert-6-may-2022/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four cases</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of measles had been identified in Gauteng, and in terms of the World Health Organization’s standards this qualifies as an outbreak. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The NICD said all four cases were in isolation and were recovering. Three of the cases had been linked. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Measles is a highly contagious disease and spreads through airborne droplets from infected people who sneeze or cough. Experts have warned that traditional non-pharmaceutical interventions like maintaining hand hygiene and physical distancing were not enough to prevent the spread of measles. </span>\r\n\r\nWhat are the <a href=\"https://www.nicd.ac.za/diseases-a-z-index/measles/\">symptoms</a>?\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Measles is most known for causing a rash but also common respiratory symptoms like coughing and sneezing;</li>\r\n \t<li>Conjunctivitis;</li>\r\n \t<li>Fever;</li>\r\n \t<li>Fatigue; and</li>\r\n \t<li>Muscle pain.</li>\r\n</ul>\r\nhttps://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-06-08-unpacking-the-cyril-ramaphosa-home-robbery-story-and-why-you-should-care/\r\n\r\nThe NICD has warned that especially in children under the age of one, measles can lead to complications in the lungs, eyes and a rare complication of inflammation of the brain, known as encephalitis.\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“These complications can lead to irreversible damage and/or death, especially in immunocompromised and malnourished children,” the NICD warned. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A team from the Gauteng Department of Health, the City of Tshwane, the West Rand district, the National Department of Health, the NICD and the World Health Organization is investigating the outbreak. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Non-pharmaceutical measures such as social distancing and handwashing might not be sufficient to prevent transmission of the measles virus. Measles is preventable through a safe and effective vaccine,” said Sinenhlanhla Jimoh from the NICD. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children receive the measles vaccine at the age of six months and a booster at 12 months. The vaccines are free at state clinics and also available at a cost at private facilities. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr Michelle Groome from the NICD urged parents to ensure that children are up to date with their vaccinations. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Late in April, the WHO and the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (Unicef) </span><a href=\"https://www.who.int/news/item/27-04-2022-unicef-and-who-warn-of--perfect-storm--of-conditions-for-measles-outbreaks--affecting-children\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warned</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that globally reported measles cases had increased by 79% in the first two months of 2022, compared with the same period in 2021. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The organisations said that pandemic-related disruptions at primary healthcare facilities and the diversion of resources from routine immunisations had left many children without protection. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost 17,338 measles cases were reported worldwide in January and February 2022, compared with 9,665 during the first two months of 2021. </span>\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/health-minister-joe-phaahla-provides-update-on-charlotte-maxeke-academic-hospital-7/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1287266\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/MC-Measles-EE.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"413\" /></a> Health Minister Dr Joe Phaahla. (Photo: Gallo Images / Luba Lesolle)</p>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The spokesperson for the National Department of Health, Foster Mohale, said Health Minister Dr Joe Phaahla had called for calm and vigilance. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The minister called on parents and caregivers to ensure that their children are up to date with their vaccinations in line with the vaccination schedule against measles and other childhood diseases. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“The measles vaccine has been in use for almost 60 years and is the best protection against this life-threatening childhood disease. It is safe, effective and available free of charge at public health facilities,” Phaahla said. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In November 2020, an alert was issued after three cases of measles were identified in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. The case numbers fell short of an outbreak being declared. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before that, in November 2019, three laboratory-confirmed measles cases were detected in Rustenburg, North West, within a period of four weeks.
