"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today is the 27th anniversary of South Africa’s freedom. At least 27 years ago, South Africa was on the front line of worldwide struggles for freedom. Enormous hope was attached to our democracy not just among oppressed South Africans, but across the world. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1973, </span><a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_of_apartheid\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">apartheid was declared a crime against humanity</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the United Nations. In the 1980s, the fight against apartheid had developed into a worldwide human rights struggle that had seen people march, be arrested, risk jobs and freedom in numerous countries. It was encircled and made impossible by solidarity and sanctions.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When freedom came, South Africa’s liberation from apartheid and colonialism gave a boost to freedom struggles across the globe and much of the 1990s saw an advance of democracy. Yet powerful countries including Russia, China and Myanmar held out against that wave. Today, democracy is under attack and in retreat on a level unprecedented in 50 years. Covid-19 has made that worse, with organisations like Freedom House documenting how </span><a href=\"https://freedomhouse.org/issues/democracies-decline\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">democracies are in decline</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> worldwide.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can celebrate democracy in SA. But democracy and social justice are nothing if they are not universal.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is why, as we reflect on </span><a href=\"https://www.gov.za/FreedomDay2021\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freedom Day 2021</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we think it is important to find ways to recognise and support the people who still fight for freedom in South Africa and across the globe. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are fighting for us. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, today we ask you to think of many human rights activists in China, some of whose </span><a href=\"https://www.nchrd.org/2016/03/list-of-prisoners-of-conscience/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">profiles</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are documented by the </span><a href=\"https://www.nchrd.org/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Network of Chinese Human Rights Defenders</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think of Hong Kong, where democracy is being snuffed out by China and its proxy government and where leaders of the democracy movement are being rounded up and imprisoned one by one: </span><a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joshua_Wong\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joshua Wong</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, </span><a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Lee\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Martin Lee</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, </span><a href=\"https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-56770567\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jimmy Lai</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, </span><a href=\"https://edition.cnn.com/2021/04/22/media/bao-choy-hong-kong-journalist-intl-hnk/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bao Choy</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and many others.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think of Myanmar, where at least </span><a href=\"https://www.aa.com.tr/en/asia-pacific/death-toll-since-myanmar-coup-now-at-739-rights-group/2217039\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">579 people have been killed</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the military junta and where more than 3,300 activists are in prison.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think of Russia and the imprisonment and torture of </span><a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexei_Navalny\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alexei Navalny</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the imminent banning of his anti-corruption organisation and other activists whose names we do not know.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think of India, where the increasing suppression of freedom of expression and association and </span><a href=\"https://thewire.in/rights/jail-bail-hearings-court-delhi-riots-elgar-parishad\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">imprisonment of scores of activists</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has aided the catastrophe of Covid-19. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think of those activists still being persecuted by democratic governments for fighting for people’s rights of access to information: </span><a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Snowden\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edward Snowden</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, </span><a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julian_Assange\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Julian Assange</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, </span><a href=\"https://www.biography.com/activist/chelsea-manning\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chelsea Manning</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Zimbabwe, think of activists in prison for protesting against the corrupt Zanu-PF regime: </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-04-23-gravely-ill-mdc-politicians-seizure-from-hospital-bed-denounced-as-a-gross-blatant-and-brazen-violation-of-human-rights/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joana Mamombe</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, </span><a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cecilia_Chimbiri\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cecilia Chimbiri</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, </span><a href=\"https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/africa/2021-04-06-zimbabwe-activist-makomborero-haruzivishe-jailed-for-14-months/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Makomborero Haruzivishe</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/opinionista/2021-04-13-kaliqunywe-secession-might-be-the-only-thing-that-can-free-matabeleland-part-three/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mthwakazi Republic Party</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Uganda we must stand in solidarity with activists facing the ever more </span><a href=\"https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/apr/22/torture-abducted-uganda-crackdown-museveni\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brutal dictatorship of Y0weri Museveni</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We must also stand side by side with activists facing growing authoritarianism in Tanzania, Burundi, Ethiopia and Zambia.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We stand in solidarity with climate crisis activists and the environmentalists, who are being murdered across the world at the rate of </span><a href=\"https://www.ecowatch.com/environmental-activists-killed-2019-2646826158.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three a day</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sadly, this list is far from complete. Sadly, all of the countries listed are allies or trading partners of South Africa. Despite our Constitution and the freedoms our government will celebrate today, our leaders are complicit or silent in other people’s unfreedoms. Solidarity helped set us free, but it seems we will not repay the favour to other countries. </span>\r\n\r\n<b>The quest for dignity and socioeconomic rights </b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In South Africa, we must remain in solidarity with activists, who continue to face harassment, imprisonment and even murder as they struggle for constitutional rights of access to housing, land and an environment that is not </span><a href=\"https://www.gov.za/documents/constitution/chapter-2-bill-rights#24\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">harmful to health and well-being</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and which is protected for future generations. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We think of people like </span><a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%27bu_Zikode\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">S’bu Zikode</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the leader of </span><a href=\"https://abahlali.org/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abahlali baseMjondolo</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and </span><a href=\"https://www.frontlinedefenders.org/en/profile/nonhle-mbuthuma\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nonhle Mbuthuma</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the </span><a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/amadibacrisiscommittee/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amadiba Crisis Committee</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; and of activists like </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2018-03-23-wild-coast-bazooka-rhadebes-murder-probe-sabotaged-by-police/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bazooka Radebe</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-10-29-murdered-kzn-anti-mining-activist-fikile-ntshangase-to-be-buried-friday-as-dispute-rages/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fikile Ntshangase</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whose murderers have still not been prosecuted. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sadly, because of corruption and a failure to take the socioeconomic rights of the Constitution seriously, millions of people in South Africa still endure multiple “unfreedoms”. They have been described in </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maverick Citizen</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over the last few days; </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-04-25-sandfs-attacks-on-gautengs-happiness-village-a-stark-reminder-of-racialised-denials-of-dignity-and-the-limitations-of-the-law/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in relation to state violence, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-04-26-lgbtqi-protesters-demand-government-action-against-hate-crimes/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in relation to hate crimes, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-04-24-food-for-thought-the-freedom-charter-and-freedom-from-hunger/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in relation to food, <a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-04-26-south-africas-rivers-of-sewage-more-than-half-of-sas-treatment-works-are-failing/\">here</a> in relation to sanitation - we could go on and on... </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite this, Freedom Day is still a day to be celebrated. Because of the vigilance of activists since 1994, we still have constitutionally enshrined freedoms of speech, the media, the right to protest; we can still use these rights to advance the freedoms we are still denied: to healthcare services, basic education, equality and social justice.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is not true in many other parts of the world.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In solidarity, we therefore call for political prisoners to be freed wherever they are; for a change in foreign policy to one that actively supports freedom struggles the world over; and at home for SA to inspire the world once more by being a leader in the fight for freedom from femicide, the climate crisis and all forms of inequality. </span><b>DM/MC</b>",
