"contents": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 1990s, two men met at the ANC’s head office, Shell House in Johannesburg.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This meeting had such deep repercussions for South Africa that they are still being felt today.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The meeting was between Glenn Agliotti, a businessman who went on to become </span><a href=\"https://mg.co.za/article/2007-12-07-agliotti-dishes-dirt-on-global-drug-network/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a convicted drug dealer</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and Jackie Selebi, who became South Africa’s police chief and a convicted criminal.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Imported clothing to help ANC</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“At that time [of the 1990s meeting, Selebi] was in charge of social welfare and development within the African National Congress. Agliotti was considering the importation into and the sale in South Africa of second-hand clothing,” court papers against Selebi later said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Agliotti was considering giving a percentage of the profits to cover the relocation costs of [presumably previously exiled] members of the African National Congress returning to South Africa.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The duo had 12 meetings, but nothing happened and “eventually Agliotti and [Selebi] went their own ways.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But they later partnered up again, sparking a long and scandalous political mess that adds to the many thick layers of corruption now twisted around South Africa.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1757846\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/0000118970.jpg\" alt=\"Jackie Selebi\" width=\"720\" height=\"420\" /> <em>Former South African police chief Jackie Selebi walks into the Supreme Court in Johannesburg, South Africa on 1 July 2010. (Photo: Gallo Images / Foto24 / Felix Dlangamandla)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>Died in hospital</b></h4>\r\n<a href=\"https://www.news24.com/news24/selebi-died-with-little-money-in-the-bank-report-20150517\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selebi died in 2015</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while reports surfaced at the weekend that </span><a href=\"https://www.news24.com/news24/southafrica/news/convicted-drug-dealer-glenn-agliotti-dies-at-johannesburg-hospital-police-confirm-20230701-2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agliotti died in a Johannesburg hospital on Friday</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 30 June 2023.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo confirmed to various news outlets that an inquest had been opened into Agliotti’s death.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Masondo told </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Thursday 6 July that a postmortem would be carried out to determine Agliotti’s cause of death.</span>\r\n\r\nhttps://youtu.be/zX_-Ld9aPHA\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agliotti and Selebi’s histories entwined several times and placed them in the middle of underworld circles.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selebi was appointed South Africa’s police chief in 2000 and from 2004 he also headed global policing organisation Interpol.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both he and Agliotti became, in a sense, criminally bonded.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Bouncers and Brett Kebble</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In September 2005, mining boss and ANC funder Brett Kebble was killed in Johannesburg.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The case took a bizarre twist when allegations were made </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2009-10-09-New-Kebble-assisted-suicide-and-other-absurdities-emerge-at-Selebi-trial/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he was shot as part of an assisted suicide</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Kebble himself orchestrated.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A group of men, Agliotti included, were accused of involvement in the strange assassination.</span>\r\n\r\n<iframe id=\"doc_19626\" class=\"scribd_iframe_embed\" title=\"The State vs Glenn Agliotti 2010\" src=\"https://www.scribd.com/embeds/657457104/content?start_page=1&view_mode=scroll&access_key=key-6XXDw3NFcgoVZZvmqjyM\" width=\"100%\" height=\"600\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-auto-height=\"false\" data-aspect-ratio=\"0.75\"></iframe>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the subsequent trial, Kebble’s housekeeper had testified that </span><a href=\"https://www.news24.com/news24/kebble-paid-selebi-for-protection-20100811\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kebble had paid Selebi</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to ensure issues that were troubling him were dealt with.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1757829\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/AV_00006516.jpg\" alt=\"Brett Kebble\" width=\"720\" height=\"482\" /> <em>Businessman Brett Kebble at the launch of the Brett Kebble art awards. (Photo: Gallo Images / Sunday Times / Muntu Vilakazi)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>‘Devil incarnates’ and ‘darkness’</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eventually, boxer Mikey Schultz, and bouncers Faizel “Kappie” Smith and Nigel McGurk, were granted indemnity from prosecution in exchange for testifying for the state.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agliotti was </span><a href=\"https://mg.co.za/article/2010-11-25-glenn-agliotti-cleared-of-kebble-murder/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">granted a discharge</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and was therefore cleared in the Kebble case.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That judgment summed up circumstances surrounding Kebble’s murder as such: “This case is about hidden and/or sinister agendas perpetrated by shoddy characters as well as ostensibly crooked and/or greedy business persons. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“It is about corrupt civil servants as well as prominent politicians or politically connected people wining and dining with devils incarnates under cover of darkness.”</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1757822\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/0000121489.jpg\" alt=\"Faizel Smith\" width=\"720\" height=\"780\" /> <em>Murder witness in the Brett Kebble case, Faizel Smith outside the South Gauteng high court during the murder case of mining magnate Brett Kebble, 27 July 2010. (Photo: Gallo Images / Foto24 / Brendan Croft)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>Collusion and cocaine trafficking</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, in early 2000 Selebi, who that year became South Africa’s national police commissioner, and Agliotti, had paired up again.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prior to Agliotti’s arrest for the Kebble saga, Selebi had at some time in 2006 shown him an official UK government document.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In doing so, Selebi, who should have been investigating Agliotti, did the very opposite.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UK government document said: “Information from the UK indicates the AGLIOTTI and others are involved with the trafficking of significant quantities of cocaine to the United Kingdom. The cocaine is due to be shipped by sea to the UK concealed within furniture.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cocaine was being transported by air from Venezuela to Angola and from there, via road, to South Africa.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1757830\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/AV_00073385.jpg\" alt=\"Mikey Schultz\" width=\"720\" height=\"467\" /> <em>Self-confessed hitman Mikey Schultz on 16 October, 2014. (Photo: Gallo Images / The Times / Alon Skuy)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>‘Baldy John’ and global kingpins</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“When the cocaine is removed from the lock-up (near Johannesburg) for onward transportation, a customs seal is placed on the container. The containers are shipped from Cape Town,” the UK government document said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agliotti was believed to have been working with South Africans as well as others including a man in the UK known as “Baldy John.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2006 Agliotti pleaded guilty to a drug smuggling charge and was handed a suspended sentence, while the following year he pleaded guilty to drug dealing and again managed to avoid jail time by agreeing to provide information to the state.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-22-the-durban-link-to-brazils-deadly-cocaine-battles/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International cocaine trafficking</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by way of South Africa is still a massive problem — </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has reported extensively on it.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This journalist’s book, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-10-31-clash-of-the-cartels-by-caryn-dolley/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clash of the Cartels: Unmasking the global drug kingpins stalking South Africa</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, explained that Agliotti had alleged ties to Nelson Pablo Yester-Garrido of Cuba, which Yester-Garrido had denied but which other sources corroborate.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick:</b> <a Johannesburg before being arrested in Rome in 2017 and sent to the US where he was </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-12-08-us-jails-nelson-pablo-yester-garrido-the-cuban-drug-lord-who-operated-from-south-africa/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sentenced to five years in jail</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2020 over a marijuana-related debt collection.</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clash of the Cartels</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also said Agliotti seemed to be linked to </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2016-02-23-czech-mate-radovan-krejcir-finally-runs-out-of-luck/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Czech criminal Radovan Krejcir</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who has deep underworld connections in South Africa and who claimed to be associated with former president Jacob Zuma’s family.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Local and international disgrace</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, in 2007 </span><a href=\"https://www.theguardian.com/world/2007/sep/27/southafrica\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a warrant of arrest was issued for Selebi</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who had tipped Agliotti off about the UK narcotrafficking investigation.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selebi became the centre of not just a national scandal, but a global one because he was South Africa’s police chief, as well as Interpol’s president.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2006 Interpol had issued a statement calling him “</span><a href=\"https://www.interpol.int/en/News-and-Events/News/2006/INTERPOL-Statement-on-South-Africa-s-Police-Commissioner-and-INTERPOL-President-Jackie-Selebi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a man of the highest professionalism and integrity</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two years later, when Selebi resigned as its president in 2008, Interpol issued a statement saying: “</span><a href=\"about:blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corruption is one of the most serious offences</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that any police official can be accused of.”</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick:</b> <a his ties to Agliotti were exposed and dissected.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agliotti himself elaborated on their dealings.</span>\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full (Photo: Gallo Images / Foto24 / Lauren Mulligan)</em></p>\r\n<h4><b>Designer kicks for a corrupt cop</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Court papers stated: “Agliotti testified that he bought two pairs of shoes for [Selebi] at Harrods in London. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“He also bought him a pair of Louis Vuitton shoes in Hong Kong. Agliotti recalled purchasing for [Selebi] Hugo Boss knitwear jerseys which the accused enjoyed wearing and an Aigner jacket in a houndstooth fabric.”</span>\r\n\r\n<iframe id=\"doc_38240\" class=\"scribd_iframe_embed\" title=\"The State Versus Jacob Sello Selebi\" src=\"https://www.scribd.com/embeds/657456675/content?start_page=1&view_mode=scroll&access_key=key-5oq2QJhzVa5CvPX2yRLk\" width=\"100%\" height=\"600\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-auto-height=\"false\" data-aspect-ratio=\"0.7080062794348508\"></iframe>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The judgment against Selebi, handed down in 2010, said: “This relationship became a generally corrupt relationship. The accused received sums of money and clothing for himself and on one occasion for the accused’s sons from Agliotti…</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“The accused so acted by sharing with Agliotti secret information about an investigation against Agliotti conducted by United Kingdom law enforcement authorities; protecting Agliotti from criminal investigation”.</span>\r\n<h4><b>‘Best hotels’ and ‘better things in life’</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agliotti’s persona was also focused on briefly in the judgment against Selebi.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“From observation whilst giving evidence,” it said, “it appears the Agliotti is a large man of imposing physical appearance.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The judgment continued: “He is relatively well-spoken. He always appeared extremely well-dressed in court. He did not appear to lack confidence, it emerged from his evidence that when travelling he stayed at the best hotels, supported up-market clothing stores, travelled overseas whilst flying first or business class and enjoyed a luxurious lifestyle. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“He deliberately gave the impression that he liked the better things in life.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite some claims that he was set up, in 2010 Selebi was found guilty of corruption and </span><a href=\"https://mg.co.za/article/2010-08-03-selebi-sentenced-to-15-years/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sentenced to 15 years in jail</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Selebi subsequently died on 23 January 2015, Agliotti had tweeted: “My condolences to Anne Selebi and the family on the passing of Jackie.”</span>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">My condolences to Anne Selebi and the family on the passing of Jackie.</p>\r\n— Glenn Agliotti (@GlennAgliotti) <a href=\"https://twitter.com/GlennAgliotti/status/558552988781150208?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 23, 2015</a></blockquote>\r\n<script async src=\"https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"></script>\r\n<h4><b>Cocreated criminal legacies</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the court papers against Selebi, he and Agliotti met in the 1990s when Agliotti was apparently considering giving money, made from selling imported clothes, to ANC members returning to South Africa.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on Agliotti’s own words, within less than two decades that purportedly good gesture turned into gratifications for greed-driven Selebi, the highest-ranking police officer in the country.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Designer clothing from a drug dealer trumped going after crooks, protecting residents, and bolstering the South African Police Service, which is still rocked by infighting and corruption accusations.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agliotti, meanwhile, fertilised South Africa’s narcotrafficking connections that are now thriving and global.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In death, both Selebi and Agliotti have left behind public legacies based on their actions that contributed to crimes including State Capture.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The corrupt cop, and now the drug dealer, go down in history as South African sellouts. </span><b>DM</b>",

"description": "<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 1990s, two men met at the ANC’s head office, Shell House in Johannesburg.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This meeting had such deep repercussions for South Africa that they are still being felt today.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The meeting was between Glenn Agliotti, a businessman who went on to become </span><a href=\"https://mg.co.za/article/2007-12-07-agliotti-dishes-dirt-on-global-drug-network/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a convicted drug dealer</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and Jackie Selebi, who became South Africa’s police chief and a convicted criminal.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Imported clothing to help ANC</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“At that time [of the 1990s meeting, Selebi] was in charge of social welfare and development within the African National Congress. Agliotti was considering the importation into and the sale in South Africa of second-hand clothing,” court papers against Selebi later said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“Agliotti was considering giving a percentage of the profits to cover the relocation costs of [presumably previously exiled] members of the African National Congress returning to South Africa.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The duo had 12 meetings, but nothing happened and “eventually Agliotti and [Selebi] went their own ways.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But they later partnered up again, sparking a long and scandalous political mess that adds to the many thick layers of corruption now twisted around South Africa.</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1757846\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"720\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-1757846\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/0000118970.jpg\" alt=\"Jackie Selebi\" width=\"720\" height=\"420\" /> <em>Former South African police chief Jackie Selebi walks into the Supreme Court in Johannesburg, South Africa on 1 July 2010. (Photo: Gallo Images / Foto24 / Felix Dlangamandla)</em>[/caption]\r\n<h4><b>Died in hospital</b></h4>\r\n<a href=\"https://www.news24.com/news24/selebi-died-with-little-money-in-the-bank-report-20150517\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selebi died in 2015</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while reports surfaced at the weekend that </span><a href=\"https://www.news24.com/news24/southafrica/news/convicted-drug-dealer-glenn-agliotti-dies-at-johannesburg-hospital-police-confirm-20230701-2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agliotti died in a Johannesburg hospital on Friday</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 30 June 2023.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo confirmed to various news outlets that an inquest had been opened into Agliotti’s death.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Masondo told </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Thursday 6 July that a postmortem would be carried out to determine Agliotti’s cause of death.</span>\r\n\r\nhttps://youtu.be/zX_-Ld9aPHA\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agliotti and Selebi’s histories entwined several times and placed them in the middle of underworld circles.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selebi was appointed South Africa’s police chief in 2000 and from 2004 he also headed global policing organisation Interpol.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both he and Agliotti became, in a sense, criminally bonded.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Bouncers and Brett Kebble</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In September 2005, mining boss and ANC funder Brett Kebble was killed in Johannesburg.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The case took a bizarre twist when allegations were made </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2009-10-09-New-Kebble-assisted-suicide-and-other-absurdities-emerge-at-Selebi-trial/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he was shot as part of an assisted suicide</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Kebble himself orchestrated.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A group of men, Agliotti included, were accused of involvement in the strange assassination.</span>\r\n\r\n<iframe id=\"doc_19626\" class=\"scribd_iframe_embed\" title=\"The State vs Glenn Agliotti 2010\" src=\"https://www.scribd.com/embeds/657457104/content?start_page=1&view_mode=scroll&access_key=key-6XXDw3NFcgoVZZvmqjyM\" width=\"100%\" height=\"600\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-auto-height=\"false\" data-aspect-ratio=\"0.75\"></iframe>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the subsequent trial, Kebble’s housekeeper had testified that </span><a href=\"https://www.news24.com/news24/kebble-paid-selebi-for-protection-20100811\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kebble had paid Selebi</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to ensure issues that were troubling him were dealt with.</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1757829\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"720\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-1757829\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/AV_00006516.jpg\" alt=\"Brett Kebble\" width=\"720\" height=\"482\" /> <em>Businessman Brett Kebble at the launch of the Brett Kebble art awards. (Photo: Gallo Images / Sunday Times / Muntu Vilakazi)</em>[/caption]\r\n<h4><b>‘Devil incarnates’ and ‘darkness’</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eventually, boxer Mikey Schultz, and bouncers Faizel “Kappie” Smith and Nigel McGurk, were granted indemnity from prosecution in exchange for testifying for the state.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agliotti was </span><a href=\"https://mg.co.za/article/2010-11-25-glenn-agliotti-cleared-of-kebble-murder/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">granted a discharge</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and was therefore cleared in the Kebble case.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That judgment summed up circumstances surrounding Kebble’s murder as such: “This case is about hidden and/or sinister agendas perpetrated by shoddy characters as well as ostensibly crooked and/or greedy business persons. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“It is about corrupt civil servants as well as prominent politicians or politically connected people wining and dining with devils incarnates under cover of darkness.”</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1757822\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"720\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-1757822\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/0000121489.jpg\" alt=\"Faizel Smith\" width=\"720\" height=\"780\" /> <em>Murder witness in the Brett Kebble case, Faizel Smith outside the South Gauteng high court during the murder case of mining magnate Brett Kebble, 27 July 2010. (Photo: Gallo Images / Foto24 / Brendan Croft)</em>[/caption]\r\n<h4><b>Collusion and cocaine trafficking</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, in early 2000 Selebi, who that year became South Africa’s national police commissioner, and Agliotti, had paired up again.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prior to Agliotti’s arrest for the Kebble saga, Selebi had at some time in 2006 shown him an official UK government document.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In doing so, Selebi, who should have been investigating Agliotti, did the very opposite.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UK government document said: “Information from the UK indicates the AGLIOTTI and others are involved with the trafficking of significant quantities of cocaine to the United Kingdom. The cocaine is due to be shipped by sea to the UK concealed within furniture.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cocaine was being transported by air from Venezuela to Angola and from there, via road, to South Africa.</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1757830\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"720\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-1757830\" src=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/AV_00073385.jpg\" alt=\"Mikey Schultz\" width=\"720\" height=\"467\" /> <em>Self-confessed hitman Mikey Schultz on 16 October, 2014. (Photo: Gallo Images / The Times / Alon Skuy)</em>[/caption]\r\n<h4><b>‘Baldy John’ and global kingpins</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“When the cocaine is removed from the lock-up (near Johannesburg) for onward transportation, a customs seal is placed on the container. The containers are shipped from Cape Town,” the UK government document said.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agliotti was believed to have been working with South Africans as well as others including a man in the UK known as “Baldy John.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2006 Agliotti pleaded guilty to a drug smuggling charge and was handed a suspended sentence, while the following year he pleaded guilty to drug dealing and again managed to avoid jail time by agreeing to provide information to the state.</span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-05-22-the-durban-link-to-brazils-deadly-cocaine-battles/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International cocaine trafficking</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by way of South Africa is still a massive problem — </span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has reported extensively on it.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This journalist’s book, </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-10-31-clash-of-the-cartels-by-caryn-dolley/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clash of the Cartels: Unmasking the global drug kingpins stalking South Africa</span></i></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, explained that Agliotti had alleged ties to Nelson Pablo Yester-Garrido of Cuba, which Yester-Garrido had denied but which other sources corroborate.</span>\r\n\r\n<b>Read more in Daily Maverick:</b> <a Johannesburg before being arrested in Rome in 2017 and sent to the US where he was </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-12-08-us-jails-nelson-pablo-yester-garrido-the-cuban-drug-lord-who-operated-from-south-africa/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sentenced to five years in jail</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2020 over a marijuana-related debt collection.</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clash of the Cartels</span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also said Agliotti seemed to be linked to </span><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2016-02-23-czech-mate-radovan-krejcir-finally-runs-out-of-luck/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Czech criminal Radovan Krejcir</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who has deep underworld connections in South Africa and who claimed to be associated with former president Jacob Zuma’s family.</span>\r\n<h4><b>Local and international disgrace</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, in 2007 </span><a href=\"https://www.theguardian.com/world/2007/sep/27/southafrica\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a warrant of arrest was issued for Selebi</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who had tipped Agliotti off about the UK narcotrafficking investigation.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selebi became the centre of not just a national scandal, but a global one because he was South Africa’s police chief, as well as Interpol’s president.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2006 Interpol had issued a statement calling him “</span><a href=\"https://www.interpol.int/en/News-and-Events/News/2006/INTERPOL-Statement-on-South-Africa-s-Police-Commissioner-and-INTERPOL-President-Jackie-Selebi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a man of the highest professionalism and integrity</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two years later, when Selebi resigned as its president in 2008, Interpol issued a statement saying: “</span><a href=\"about:blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corruption is one of the most serious offences</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that his ties to Agliotti were exposed and dissected.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agliotti himself elaborated on their dealings.</span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1757850\" (Photo: Gallo Images / Foto24 / Lauren Mulligan)</em>[/caption]\r\n<h4><b>Designer kicks for a corrupt cop</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Court papers stated: “Agliotti testified that he bought two pairs of shoes for [Selebi] at Harrods in London. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“He also bought him a pair of Louis Vuitton shoes in Hong Kong. Agliotti recalled purchasing for [Selebi] Hugo Boss knitwear jerseys which the accused enjoyed wearing and an Aigner jacket in a houndstooth fabric.”</span>\r\n\r\n<iframe id=\"doc_38240\" class=\"scribd_iframe_embed\" title=\"The State Versus Jacob Sello Selebi\" src=\"https://www.scribd.com/embeds/657456675/content?start_page=1&view_mode=scroll&access_key=key-5oq2QJhzVa5CvPX2yRLk\" width=\"100%\" height=\"600\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-auto-height=\"false\" data-aspect-ratio=\"0.7080062794348508\"></iframe>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The judgment against Selebi, handed down in 2010, said: “This relationship became a generally corrupt relationship. The accused received sums of money and clothing for himself and on one occasion for the accused’s sons from Agliotti…</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“The accused so acted by sharing with Agliotti secret information about an investigation against Agliotti conducted by United Kingdom law enforcement authorities; protecting Agliotti from criminal investigation”.</span>\r\n<h4><b>‘Best hotels’ and ‘better things in life’</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agliotti’s persona was also focused on briefly in the judgment against Selebi.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“From observation whilst giving evidence,” it said, “it appears the Agliotti is a large man of imposing physical appearance.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The judgment continued: “He is relatively well-spoken. He always appeared extremely well-dressed in court. He did not appear to lack confidence, it emerged from his evidence that when travelling he stayed at the best hotels, supported up-market clothing stores, travelled overseas whilst flying first or business class and enjoyed a luxurious lifestyle. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“He deliberately gave the impression that he liked the better things in life.”</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite some claims that he was set up, in 2010 Selebi was found guilty of corruption and </span><a href=\"https://mg.co.za/article/2010-08-03-selebi-sentenced-to-15-years/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sentenced to 15 years in jail</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. </span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Selebi subsequently died on 23 January 2015, Agliotti had tweeted: “My condolences to Anne Selebi and the family on the passing of Jackie.”</span>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\r\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">My condolences to Anne Selebi and the family on the passing of Jackie.</p>\r\n— Glenn Agliotti (@GlennAgliotti) <a href=\"https://twitter.com/GlennAgliotti/status/558552988781150208?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 23, 2015</a></blockquote>\r\n<script async src=\"https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"></script>\r\n<h4><b>Cocreated criminal legacies</b></h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the court papers against Selebi, he and Agliotti met in the 1990s when Agliotti was apparently considering giving money, made from selling imported clothes, to ANC members returning to South Africa.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on Agliotti’s own words, within less than two decades that purportedly good gesture turned into gratifications for greed-driven Selebi, the highest-ranking police officer in the country.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Designer clothing from a drug dealer trumped going after crooks, protecting residents, and bolstering the South African Police Service, which is still rocked by infighting and corruption accusations.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agliotti, meanwhile, fertilised South Africa’s narcotrafficking connections that are now thriving and global.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In death, both Selebi and Agliotti have left behind public legacies based on their actions that contributed to crimes including State Capture.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The corrupt cop, and now the drug dealer, go down in history as South African sellouts. </span><b>DM</b>",
