"description": "Daily Maverick is an independent online news publication and weekly print newspaper in South Africa.\r\n\r\nIt is known for breaking some of the defining stories of South Africa in the past decade, including the Marikana Massacre, in which the South African Police Service killed 34 miners in August 2012.\r\n\r\nIt also investigated the Gupta Leaks, which won the 2019 Global Shining Light Award.\r\n\r\nThat investigation was credited with exposing the Indian-born Gupta family and former President Jacob Zuma for their role in the systemic political corruption referred to as state capture.\r\n\r\nIn 2018, co-founder and editor-in-chief Branislav ‘Branko’ Brkic was awarded the country’s prestigious Nat Nakasa Award, recognised for initiating the investigative collaboration after receiving the hard drive that included the email tranche.\r\n\r\nIn 2021, co-founder and CEO Styli Charalambous also received the award.\r\n\r\nDaily Maverick covers the latest political and news developments in South Africa with breaking news updates, analysis, opinions and more.",

Her first real experience of wildlife came on a primary school outing to Nairobi National Park, just 7km from the city. It is best known for breeding endangered black rhinos and is home to giraffes, zebras and lions.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amoke also visited an elephant orphanage operated by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. But that was not where her wildlife career aspirations really began.</span>\r\n<h4>Animals trump people</h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She had hoped to join the medical profession and chased her dream of becoming a doctor all the way to pre-med. It dawned on Amoke how much there was to learn about the continent’s rich wildlife and complex ecosystems.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She went on to achieve her dream of becoming a doctor – but of ecology, not of medicine.</span>\r\n<h4>Challenges</h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conservation field comes with many challenges that can feel insurmountable, including climate change, a lack of funding, and looming extinctions.</span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amid this, Amoke is proud of the role Kenya plays in preserving the continent’s wildlife. Witnessing this first-hand motivates her, especially when the going gets tough. And she’s enthusiastic about making space in conservation for young people with their inspiring and “unapologetic, brave” voices.</span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read more in </span></i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily Maverick</span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: “</span></i><a href=\"https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2022-07-08-sa-in-groundbreaking-rethink-on-protection-of-biodiversity/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SA in ground-breaking rethink on protection of biodiversity</span></i></a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">”</span></i>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I’m not against the traditional conservation approaches, but we need to be very open to using and incorporating new ideas.
